ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I’m tempted to Pre pay too on Coles for same reason .

It's worth keeping in mind the false economy of prepayment IF the cost per point is a concern for you and you're using personal funds. Roughly speaking, if you have a mortgage at 4%pa with an offset acct, and you prepay your BAS three months in advance, that's a little over 1% you've added to the cost of the points: prepaying on the Coles card goes from an equivalent of 1 Velocity point for approx 0.52c (0.45/0.87) for a debt due nowish, to 1.67c (1.45/0.87) for a debt you've chosen to pay three months in advance. (This is a simplified calculation. The cost would actually be a teeeny bit higher. And if you hold onto the points for a long time, you increase the cost even more.)

Cove, in your experience paying large sums of public benefit dollars via various CCs, for those that include a clause excluding points earn for txns for 'business purposes', have points always managed to post? No concerned calls from issuing banks about 'suspiciously high amounts'?

Methinks that most of the card companies have selective blindness as long as they make their interchange fees, but then again I may misjudging them ?

I guess we are lucky in that we don’t have a mortgage. That was helped by buying our home almost 27 years ago and not having to move. Not paying stamp duty along with buying and selling costs is a very big saving. Low interest rates are perfect for paying down a housing mortgage quickly.
Personal tax rates up near 50% should get fixed but nobody is working on that idea. Most politicians are working their fingers to the bone to get their luxury travelling paid for them by us if they can.
It is true that there is a cost that attaches to money you can invest so I do like to use the 30 to 55 free days on some credit cards but not every time.
The next thing is you can fly in economy to the US from Perth for about $1000 return but at our age you might feel like a zombie for a week at each end. I do have to work when I get there.
Westpac will be losing a big hold on us once the Kris Flyer Amex ends on April 3rd.

I cannot remember which cards now, but I do remember various posters reporting that that they had been pulled up on large business spend on non business cards.

I have had the occassional call from Citibank when using my Virgin High Flyer asking me what our I do for work. I figured out if I kept each transaction below $50k the calls stopped.

Never had a call from BW regarding any transactions. Actually we had to ring them as a $90k transaction wouldn't go through BW confirmed the money was there and didn't know why it failed. In the end we split it into 2 transactions and all good.

I have done ok with BWW despite the $12,000 credit limit. With Qantas points I am now only about half a million points behind Mrscove. BW have never called me.

anyone has problem with /pay? Loaded $400 but try to pay the man with $199.2, but the man said insufficient funds available. Paid stuff with paypal and it was all sweet as.

Made a slight tactical mistake by paying NSW land tax with ANZ Black...no points awarded! :(

Yes I agree LTO. I don’t need to keep churning cards but I do now have some CCs that are no longer worth keeping that I will be cancelling.

We really need a hug button.

We've been paying a capital gains bill a bit each week via card so a nice chunk of points each month.

Finally my darling Mrs QF WP understands the reasons for me wanting to use my business CC to pay all bills including ATO. Pity it's a Macquarie Hilton Visa, but at least I'll be Hilton Diamond for the foreseeable future.

I think that Macquarie CC will pay zero points on ATO QF WP.

The Macquarie Hilton CC has never paid points. The spend does go towards my $40K cap for Hilton Diamond status. I'll have Suites for another year...

That is good to know that ATO spend counts towards the 40K to get to Diamond! The best time to put 40K on your Macquarie card is from early April (new Hilton year) as quickly as possible. When you hit 40K spend, you will get Diamond for the remainder of that year, the following year, and up to 31st March the 3rd year :)

Damn, looks like @cove is correct @kpc . Had a phone call back from Macquarie and she confirmed my annual spend commences on the anniversary of taking up the card (so for me 26 Feb IIRC). Also transactions that are ignored towards the eligible spend include any Government charges (including ATO).

Coles card cut across to Citi today. Old login stopped working and I ‘registered’ again and have online access again. Would have been nice if they’d told us this was happening.

I made my last Fiscal payment on 1 March - which is before the cut over to Citi.that payment has not posted to my card yet. Am I likely to get my points under the old regime or will the charge be assessed under the new regime (no points for fiscal payments) under the new regime?

Good question, but you could argue it strongly. I made my last fiscal payment on 26 Feb. It was showing as a pending payment until Friday when the card portal went down. On the Flybuys site it appeared as processed, dated 3 March.

Have 4 weeks left on Westpac Amex Kris Flyer. I probably won’t risk an April payment seeing April 3rd is the finishing line.
Too bad about Coles hitching a ride with Citi.
