ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Damn
I’ve got a 6 figure amount to pay early next year
It’s the only reason I keep the card
I will cancel mine
Cant see any other reasonable options
I must admit I did not see the message
Why ?
Surely they make money out if the transactions ??

I don’t usually read the notices on my statements, went back and had a look:
WE WILL TREAT ANY TRANSACTION THAT THE CARD SCHEME (VISA OR MASTERCARD) TELLS US IS GOVERNMENT RELATED AS A GOVERNMENT RELATED PAYMENT. FROM 9 DECEMBER 2020, POINTS WILL NO LONGER BE EARNED FOR PURCHASES OR PAYMENTS TO A LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ENTITY OR GOVERNMENT RELATED AGENCY, INCLUDING TO THE AUSTRALIAN TAX OFFICE, AUSTRALIA POST OR TO MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRIES.

Was bound to happen eventually which is a great shame. Appears to be more wide ranging and will likely include AP payments since everyone else treats them as ‘government’.Guess it’s now onto the payment processors until that gets shut down then. I’m not sure if there’s any value left on points chasing after that.
Thanks - what a pity - its about the only points paying expense I'm prepared to do currently

I've definitely had a payment back into my linked ATO savings account when I accidentally paid the quarterly BAS by credit card for the same account twice. I have 2 companies to look after and I put the wrong code in when doing the second payment, resulting in a double payment for one company, and no payment for the other. Luckily they did not charge interest, I guess they figured they had my funds one way or another. Getting extra points (although with a surcharge) was an unintended bonus.

The little dragon was much appreciated.
Might be a lot of mistakes before December !!

Just pay it now / before 9th Dec - then cancel card.
You can then either ask ATO for a refund or accept the very small borrowing cost for early payment.

I agree pay it off now if the points are worth it for you.

I suspect they don’t make much off government merchants which is why everyone is slowly cutting them out of earn. Suspect that this is the start of Dragon realigning to parent Westpac with points conversion to be next. Dragon must’ve hit its market share target. Whether it stays there well wait to see.

Just hoping we all have enough points to live it up when travel resumes. I have been loading points into our various family accounts. Of course after 9th December our lives will be simplified. Mrscove paid our WA land tax last week and she will pay all the shire rates as annual rather than quarterly. Our Australia Post bills are almost zero now as they are less relevant as a supplier.

Is the CBA owned “WA bank” card still working? It’s been so long since I needed to know. Might have to open an account.
The world MasterCard.

Wow what an awful year. First no more Velocity to Krisflyer transfers, and now this.

The problem with transferring all points out and cancelling the card is that Krisflyer points expire in 3 years. Award flights might be hard to come by when (if) we can travel again.

I think I will be flipping between ANZ, Westpac and St George cards for sign-up bonuses in the future. I shudder at the thought of flying long haul economy again :(

I read my dragon statement today and yes December 9th will be a date I can remember. Today i paid our September BAS. Have a slew of quarterlies some with extended dates into November.
Might prepay our October and November BAS as well as some shire rates and stuff like that.

Nothing left so life will be simpler not having to transfer funds. Our family has enjoyed this thread that’s for sure.
Have always been good at last hurrahs so we will be busy prepaying stuff.
Hopefully SQ get their A380s back running as Suites has been fun for us.

I think its been a good run when it comes to ATO payments. One by one they started to crack down on these and it was only a matter of time due to the lowered interchange rates post Royal Commission into banking.

I guess YP + amplify now is the next best???
That would be my guess too

Btw, I was just reading Matt's article and noticed the comment below - can anyone point me in the right direction?

There are still some business credit cards in Australia that award points at the full rate for government payments.
