well I'm actually pretty okay with the Australian as a substitute. I understand that it was AFR that didnt want to proceed with the partnership, not amex. so i feel like amex have given us the next best thing.

Yeah, the Australian is a deal breaker for me - and would be on value alone, aside from my distaste for their editorial values. I'll capture my remaining travel benefits, see what retention if any they offer ahead of renewal, and happily cancel if not.

I completely agree. There has been no effort put into this. If I wanted the Australian I would get it through Apple news along with magazines etc. it’s just like I’m prepaying for things. Amex seems to be neglecting its platinum card holders and are trying to hobble things together. My card is cancelled as soon as I use my travel credits.

After receiving the disappointing news that we were set to loose the AFR subscription, I received an email a couple of days ago that from July, platinum card holders are set to receive a premium subscription offer to The Australian.

I am not very happy as I hardly read The Australian. AFR was great value. I would have been happier with The Age or a subscription to MorningStar Premium.

Why do these guys never consult us - the end users - before deciding what they want to change. AFterall, we pay top $ for the card.

EDIT: On a serious note, what does "premium subscription offer" mean? Just a fancy way of saying "the basic digital subscription", or could we be expecting the paper delivery option too? If anything, the paper is very good at helping start my fireplace

That appears to be the same as their basic digital subscription, minus the "The Australian Plus" member benefits program. Granted, that program is a collection of competitions and fairly niche offers, but it's a bit rich of Amex to call it a "Premium" subscription benefit when it includes less than the lowest subscription tier.

I agree this a bad replacement to the AFR. I like the suggestion of Morningstar premium. Uni kids get the Australian subxx subscription for $25 for the entire year

Granted, most CCs in Australia don’t have the range of features but these aren’t exceptional features now for the AF difference outside the show off factor of having a metal card which no one uses anyway with Apple Pay.

At the risk of upsetting a few people, but also making a lot more very happy, let me offer all you good people a ‘work around‘ to get the AFR for free.

Simply turn off JavaScript in your prefferred browser and voila, every article is free. For example, in Safari on iOS, go to Settings / Safari / Advanced / JavaScript (toggle). Each browser has a different way to turn off JavaScript so YMMV. Turn it off while reading the AFR and back on when not. The only discernible difference is that you won’t see any embedded pictures in each article. All the content is still there.

Stick it to Fairfax and Amex, or retain your lofty moral standards and abstain from such debauchery. Your choice.

Problem was AFR subscription (and maybe Accorplus?) was added as a benefit to justify the AF increase from $1200 to $1450, and now they replaced the AFR subscription with something else yet I don't see them dropping the AF back to $1200....
