Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Our kitchen exhaust is one that vents into itself and not externally. Apartments built around 12 years ago.

Or rather is possibly a carbon filter type designed to removes smells with a small oil trap to catch what is not trapped by the filter (often metal). If no carbon filter it will just trap the oils.

Yes many are like that. Many are not. But that's illegal for bathrooms - they must be vented externally in apartments.

It's possible to build low rises with separate external exhausts but once a strata building gets to a certain size, some form of shared exhaust system is usually needed.

Yes highrise buildings will have service/utility risers. Even medium buildings like this one may well have them.

In terms of risk at the complex the information that we do not know, but which the CHO and contact Tracers will know is where the cases are located in the complex.

ie are they in abutting apartments (horizontally and vertically), or are they randomly spread a distance apart?

From memory the use of language was more suggestive of a cluster of people living at a common location having tested positive rather than having been direct neighbours.

Else just living near or a possible passing contact in a hallway is enough to catch the virus?

Well earlier they did indicated that about 1 in 8 cases only had "fleeting" connection. ie Had been within the same proximity at a shared point in time, but where no known interchange such as a conversation, sitting at adjoining tables, customer/retail assistant interchange etc had occurred.

So yes could have been any of those, or passed on the street, or waited at the same tramstop, or visited the same convenience store....
.....or were out sharing the common spaces at the complex (see below).

Further enjoy ducted heating and cooling, new lighting fixtures throughout, intercom entry and secure undercover car space on title. Building facilities include beautifully maintained gardens, resort style pool, spa, barbeque, and fully equipped gymnasium.

So some potential common areas apart from the outdoor spaces could include the "indoor" underground carpark and gym.

Basic building design amalgamates out going vents wherever possible. There are some that have to be run separately, or are only allowed to mix with their own kind, but on the whole it makes sense to amalgamate. This is generally not an issue as they are all heading out but circumstance can arise where differing pressures could cause unexpected reversals. An obvious case is where different areas are at significantly different temperatures.

Update: Outbreaks

Two further positive cases were notified to the Department this morning and will be included in tomorrow’s numbers.
They reside separately in the Kings Park apartment complex in Southbank.
Based on these results – and investigations conducted over the previous 24 hours – the Department has expanded the number of Primary Close Contacts at this site to include all residents and visitors to the complex from 2 June to 14 June. They will be required to quarantine for 14 days.
A full public health response was initiated yesterday including rapid onsite testing of more than 200 residents.
A briefing with impacted residents was held this afternoon, and specialist infection control nurses are on site.
This complex has been published online as a public exposure site.

NSW Health investigating ‘identical viral sequence’ of local COVID cases in quarantine hotel

NSW Health is investigating the source of a locqlCOVID-19 case in the Radisson Blu quarantine hotel in Sydney which has an identical viral sequence to two cases who were staying in an adjacent room.

The department on Tuesday night said it was “currently unclear how and where transmission occurred” between a couple and another traveller all staying on the fourth floor of the O’Connell Street hotel.

Only three more cases to the 2 announced already, all 3 linked.

Vaccines heading back up to after the long weekend.

Unsurprising another HQ local transmission and there will be continue to be more.

This process and facilities are not built for this purpose. There are so many points that transmission could have occurred.
It may be. But given when he turned positive, it may also not have occurred after he arrived in his room though.

One thing we know though is that the virus is easily transmissible and sometimes a lot more yransmissible than at other times.

Also some people are superspreaders, most are not.

The five new locally-acquired cases include two announced yesterday and three further cases linked to current outbreaks. [2/2]

Well looking at the exposure sites list in Victoria I hope that one the new cases was not a superspreader as there are a lot of recent visits to food stores, Bunnings and coffee shops.

Is it just me , or is Bunnings a magnet for the infected as it seems to feature a lot as an exposure site throughout the pandemic? Maybe a symptom should be the sudden urge to renovate ;)

But the point is they found it at the origin - not out in the community as what happened in Melbourne.

The system can work, and does so the vast majority of the time.
