Though in the Sydney outbreak there are now 6 in ICU and 2 on ventilators.1 or 2 may be from HQ as I have no info on the breakdown but it means the rate of serious covid is ~1.5-2% in this outbreak.

Not nice for anyone to be in ICU, however we did buy thousands of ventilators and convert many wards to "COVID Wards" (I know the one at Balmain hospital has never been used).

SA closed its converted covid hospital almost a year ago.

ACT built an extra hospital on on a sports oval. Then it was turned into a testing centre, now it is a vaccination hub. Never used as a Covid hospital, but it’s had heaps of use in its other 2 lives. It will all be dismantled and the oval restored one day. I think Aspen Medical built it.

Except the 2032 Olympics, as AP is going to Tokyo personally to secure them. 🤣

Let it be known that nobody else wants the 2032 Olympics, Brisbane is the only bid in consideration.

Surely the Australian Ambassador could go with the rest dialling in.

There is no "securing" to be done and it will not be a "disaster" if they don't turn up in person.

Adelaide Council has permanently cancelled NYE Fireworks

I won't get woken up any more at midnight then 😂😂 (not a fan of NYE, would rather get up early on 1 January to welcome the new year).

Oh no, you arent one of those North Adelaide folk? 🥴 We are usually asleep also but dont let that spoil the fun of others. Once a year, I can do that.

Just to let it be known, in case there was any doubt, I was being sarcastic here!!! I was neither supporting nor opposing the trip.

I may have heard wrong but thought Dr Chant all in the ICU are over 50, so there is an element of personal responsibility if they hadn't at least had their first dose given any local cases in hospital are metro.

Because the census is a constant snapshot at a point of time and can be compared through time.

They added the internet question to census only recently, so what they capture does evolve over time.

i've always elect to do the census on paper and tick to have it retained for release in ?70 years with name attached. Family historians in the future will thank me

That's nice, but i predict this will be one of the last (if not the last) with a paper option. In future, our ancestors will likely be looking at our digital footprint (old facebook, linked in etc) which will give more insights than your home address, job title, income and religion you identify with from the census.

Seems an odd thing to do in the midst of a global pandemic
Hindsight a beautiful thing, but the reasoning & economics to retain a covid Ward on an oval with nurses, doctors, specialists & surgeons hanging around for now 12+ months for how many SA hospital covid cases.

I think a few states had them set up, outside conventional hospital & closed them down as unnecessary.

Worked out ok I think.

Even during the height of the Victorian second wave, I dont think they ever resorted to temporary tented field hospitals (the way they did in parts of the US and UK), all patients removed from their homes/aged care facilities went to hospitals that existed pre-pandemic (although some ward usage may have been altered).

Field hospitals should only be activated when there is need. Aside from Qld who sends all positive to hospital (even if they arent unwell), most states have rarely had more than 12 people in hospital and 1-5 in ICU at a time, with the exception being Victoria last winter (which was an outlier than should not recurr)

Yep, it was all based on the (in hindsight, ludicrous) assumption that the virus would keep increasing exponentially and nothing we did would slow it down. They predicted 150,000 deaths by Jul 2020. Hence the whole flatten the curve mantra.

Obviously with the national lockdown, border closures, hotel quarantine, social distancing, hand washing etc we managed to strangle it rather quickly.

Such a shame this isnt still the matra - its realistic. Covid zero is not.

I shared this article back in Mar 2020 with friends. Back then everyone believed in the flatten the curve plan.

Turns out this guy was right.

Agree. The instant epidemiologists made those predictions to Govt and was acted upon, those predictions were no longer valid.

All the extra ICU space is long gone now..
I can tell you that my own hospital is fully prepared should it need to re-open its planned covid capacity. The wards are still there and the equipment is in storage.

Though yesterday Sydney had 26 in hospital and 6 in ICU including 2 on ventilators.During this outbreak 9 have been admitted to ICU.
And this highlights the problem. We should not presume that because the risk of covid has been small that it will remain so even if we had many more vaccinated.Just look at Israel's recent stats.Cases rising from a zero per day in early may to 496 (july 5th) a day now and 50% of them had been vaccinated with Pfizer.
And not all mild.
