Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

For SYdney (and Newcastle) how would that be any different in terms of actions/restrictions taken?
I think NSW has already abandoned covid zero. Vaccinate and then open up.

NSW will now get there first if current vaccination trends are maintained. QLD and WA are going to be in for a lot of lockdowns if they don’t lift their game.

I don’t know I feel somewhat relieved that this pressure gasket has blown? Does anyone else feel the same?
Regrettably, but yes.

I personally am of the belief COVID zero has become a purely political goal as anyone with any clue on the health side has likely seen the writing on the wall for at least 6 months that zero was no longer a sustainable target.

I think our SA CHO clings to Covid zero. Said as much just a few weeks ago.

Many in Sydney would argue covid-zero was never the goal here in NSW, it was something trying to be forced onto NSW from other states who abandoned flatten the curve.

Its time to let the fully vaccinated have more freedoms, covid isnt going away, we cant be hermits forever, its causing many other health issues.

I'm still curious about what flattening the delta curve looks like. It seems you can't manage it without being in lockdown. If the Reff = 1 (or just above) in Sydney now what will it be with relaxation? What will the curve look like?

I'm fully vaccinated, I don't expect any more freedoms until such time as the overall rate of vaccination is much higher and the rollout is significantly progressed.

Appears a virus spreading event at Blacksmiths beach. Not sure if they came from the Central Coast but I would think it would have to be.
Question asked at the presser suggested some came from Sydney but they didn't want the press to push the blame game as they wanted people to be honest with their movements.

One can see why COVID zero was a useful goal though. When the population was (and still is) largely unvacccinated, it allows all sorts of things to proceed in a relatively normal manner, such as having 80,000 people at a football match, and it has been much better for the economy than having some sort of intermediate land where your have all sorts of restrictions because you don't want COVID zero, but at the same time don't want to let it rip.

Thousands of lives were saved because of COVID zero, that is undeniable and a great achievement. But time changes everything.

Honestly, as awful as it is people are dying in Sydney as a result of the virus (which is going to happen ongoing now probably forever) this unfortunately was the series of outbreaks Australia needed to get our A’s into G, shake off vaccine snobbery and hesitancy and get people moving. I’ve seen even the ‘wait and see’ type around starting to waver and do something about it, book appointments to see their GP.

Sydney will never get back to zero now anyway, which means there will be ongoing outbreaks seeded into VIC and QLD, probably SA in an ongoing basis.

I think I do, yes.

My preference would have been COVID zero, I certainly don't want COVID MAX; maybe I should just have a glass of water instead; wait - what were we talking about again?! :P

Well things have not changed yet.

Possibly October, November, or December when supply outstrips demand and the hesitant become obvious. No need to count our chickens before they hatched - never know whether a breakthrough variant or something else arises before then.

Interestingly, on this record day in NSW... the Reff dropped to 1.0 today from 1.1, yesterday...
NSW Reff (effective reproduction number)

what if we lock down forever - guess what - the variants will still come. Oh and life would be miserable.

My point was Sydney might not get to say 70% 2-dose vaccinated (when things might change) to get out of lockdown and Sydney has to deal with something else.
Every reason to get vaccinated now to try mitigate one risk and allow focus on others. Last I checked we still have a road toll despite airbags and seat belts.
