Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

You can't blame the ACT authorities. Who would have thought that Covid would have been able to penetrate the ring of steel protecting Canberra? It's no wonder they didn't have a plan in place to handle large numbers of Covid tests!

New positive COVID case at Bathurst jail

Another man has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Bathurst jail, days after an inmate tested positive at the prison.
Corrective Services New South Wales says the 29-year-old man was a new arrival and was swabbed as a routine procedure, and is not believed to be linked to the earlier case.

He has been in a single cell since arriving at the centre on Wednesday and contact tracing is underway.
The earlier positive case later returned to Walgett, after being released from the prison on bail, sparking an outbreak in the remote town.

HQ man leaves medi-hotel for 8 hours overnight ......

A man undertaking hotel quarantine at an Adelaide medi-hotel has escaped overnight in what SA Police says is the first such breach in the state since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Police said the international traveller was out of his hotel room from 10:00pm last night to 6:00am this morning.
They said he "deliberately breached hotel security and subsequently spent a number of hours in the community" but returned voluntarily.

Too busy locking up Olympians.

Maybe it was all part of the Olympic plan. Trojan horse. It's all Greek after all.

Add it to the SA Health list

- Pizza box
- Duck & cover (from footballs)
- Leave HQ for a pub session

Rather poor form just being able to walk out. From the dates he has been here since 3 August so almost due for release. I wonder why he came back? Must be a local. No one seems worried here thank god, otherwise we'd be in lockdown already. We also had someone hand themselves in yesterday to a Police Station having been in NSW. How he got through the border? Tic tic tic.

Probably went on a bender and came back for the hot breakfast fry up?

The government(s) had the people on side for a while but they took advantage of that good will doing sweet FA apart from tough border slamming/clocks/elections and just coasted for months.

And this is my biggest concern. This has been a massive f-up by all levels of government. People should be revolting and rioting in the streets. Instead? The public are so hysterical that they’re just accepting what the same government tells them, and anyone who dares to step up is shut down (or arrested).

It’s a terrifying set of circumstances and if anyone believes government give this up then they’re extremely naive. This is far more frightening than the virus.

Still zero in SA, masks to remain in all indoor and many outdoor settings. Limits of 10 in households. Ordered some nicer disposable masks yesterday as I cannot wear the washable ones and breathe at the same time. Expectations from SA Health it's just a matter of time for another lockdown.

Royal Show cancelled yesterday as they were only allowed 5000 people on site, which as the organisers said, was almost accounted for just by people working there. Was due to start in 3 weeks. Footy going ahead with 15,000. Sigh.

. Ordered some nicer disposable ones yesterday as I cannot wear the washable ones and breathe at the same time.

When I was out today I was just thinking that now that the large majority of people now are wearing the disposable blue medical masks.

Whereas it used to be the that the majority were wearing cloth masks (both bought and homemade).

The ACT CM at the presser made a few rather extraordinary statements;

1). We have been planning for this (when we have Covid cases).

2). If you are not a close contact and don't have symptoms then don't get tested.

3). No other jurisdiction was able to ramp up their testing sufficiently in the first couple of days.

It seems to me;

1). Planning was insufficient. Perhaps they didn't notice 6 lockdowns in nearby Victoria and various lockdowns in Sydney?

2). OK they can't cope but is this a message they really want to broadcast?

3). Ah OK. Everybody else stuffed up so we can as well. That is all right then!

I hope at some point they don't go on about their 'world class' response.

I've been doing some checking because of the breathing issue, and while I don't go out much - hate wearing the masks etc - disposables are more popular. I usually climb the fire stairs to get up to the apartment, two flights, and by the time I got to the top wearing the cloth ones, I just wanted to rip it off. I don't get that feeling with the disposable ones.

The NSW Govt seems to have slipped into 'go through the motions mode' now.

Last week Brad Hazzard said there was nothing wrong with tests in The Hunter having a 5 day turnaround. If that is still happening then the results announced this morning may date back to last Sunday or Monday testing.

For Greater Sydney testing time turnaround approved by State Govt is now at 48 hours for Laverty (as of end July), down from 4 days as at late June, early July. For surveillance testing - get tested 6pm Monday, get results after 6pm Wednesday, then back for next test 6pm Thursday. Laverty times reported to have blown out again due to Victorian spare capacity no longer available for some reason.

The SMH had an article about it a few days ago apparently, this was sent to me.

Today the NSW Health language has changed on turnaround times for Greater Sydney, it is now 'most tests will be back between 24 & 48 hours'.

NSW contact tracing has solved 45 unlinked infection transmission chains this outbreak, dropped investigations into 28 unlinked chains, and has over 2,400 unlinked chains logged currently.

As the State Govt refuses to add further measures then we are in a situation akin to the 2019/20 bushfires - fighting a losing holding action waiting for the rains to come. In this case we're waiting for a flood of Pfizer & Moderna to douse the spread - but we have certainty that flood will come in the next few months.

Myself and all of the family have been wearing the blue disposable Surgical masks throughout the pandemic when required in public. They are very comfortable, easy to breathe through.
I tend to follow the extended use policy that we have at work.
Wear for 4 hours and replace.

That is an old asylum-seeker trick. Are you sure he wasn't a NSW resident?

During the Cold War, Russians would occasionally cross the Finnish border through the forest and make their way about 35 kms to Hamina and claim political asylum at the police station there. The Finns promptly returned them to Russia.

No details released as yet. Likely because he handed himself in there wont be any repercussions and it will simply disappear from any press conferences.

So they were finished?

My understanding is that 10,000 attendance per day was granted which is still not enough to break even. From a high ranking SAPOL officer I was also told that the government weren’t keen on the show all along as it’s the site of our biggest vaccination hub and with supplies starting to ramp ump they weren’t keen on interrupting the roll out or jeopardising vaccinations but sourcing and setting up alternate locations. The Showgrounds will hopefully be a hive of activity in the coming months but for other reasons

I think most people ask 'what would rioting in the streets achieve'? What if the rioters got what they wanted... all restrictions abolished. Then what? Everyone has covid and hospitals are overwhelmed. All this when vaccination targets are just 12 weeks away?
