Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I wish we knew about this incredibly infectious disease that can hospitalise otherwise healthy people before last month. It could have given us so much time to prepare our health care and judicial systems to cope with such a scenario like the above :(

Good to see that those who need to enforce the rules agree a curfew is pointless. From the ABC Blog:

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has told ABC News that a curfew in Sydney, similar to the one in Melbourne, should not be needed.

He said the police and ADF presence along with the current restrictions should be able to stop the spread of the virus.

"We look worldwide in terms of what is works and we don't believe a curfew is what will work," he said.

Good to see another police commissioner with sense.

And IIRC this outbreak was started by Corrective Services/ Justice Health releasing a prisoner to make his own way home into a vulnerable community with a Covid Swab result pending ?

Has anyone at the pressers asked any questions about this ?
Because a harsher lockdown / ring of steel/ permits/ curfews and what not would have had no effect here.

I have not watched most of the NSW pressers, but the other question also then is where did the prisoner catch it? What was the transmission chain leading to him being infected? Has then been any commentary on that? From a quick google, there does not seem to be anything on that aspect as yet.

It is implied that he arrived at BSC already infected, but no complete details are given on his movements prior to BSC (it dis state that he had not been at hotspot location though prior) and where he was prior when he became infected.

The 27-year-old man was tested upon his entry to the Bathurst Correctional Centre at 4:00pm on Saturday August 7, as a standard precaution for all new admissions.
The positive result did not return until Wednesday August 11, by which time he had been released on bail and travelled home to Walgett, more than 470 kilometres away.
A second inmate at the Bathurst jail has tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday.
The 29-year-old man, a new prisoner, is believed to have been infected in Dubbo, and was swabbed on his arrival to the Bathurst prison on Wednesday.
Corrective Services said he had been in a single cell while awaiting results, and contact tracing was underway to determine who had been exposed to him.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network said the earlier case of the 27-year-old man was asymptomatic, was not a known close or casual contact of a COVID-19 case, and had not visited a hotspot location, so his routine swab was dispatched as non-urgent the following day.
He was contacted as soon as possible after the result was known and told to isolate, and his close contacts were also notified.
The spokesperson said if he had been known as a contact, or an exposure, his sample would have been fast tracked and he would have been told to isolate until a negative test had been received.

Perhaps - ABC reporting the Vic Police

'Absolutely outrageous behaviour': Victoria Police chief says the actions of a few have not been good enough

Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton says there has been concerning behaviour in the Melbourne community over the past week.

“We’ve seen some really disappointing behaviour, we’ve seen some selfish behaviour, and some absolutely outrageous behaviour,” he said.

He gave examples including the Richmond pub crawl as well as some near the Peacock Hotel playing music in the park and people sitting in the street drinking.

“Every one of these things is just totally unacceptable and everybody knows they’re doing the wrong thing,” he said.

“We’ve seen so many different breaches, it’s just ridiculous and it has to stop.”
I get the point that is being made, but I think that the powers that be have lost the goodwill of the people that is necessary for compliant behaviour. There have been too many "exceptions" for important people, and many of the rules don't have evidence to back them.

When Seat Son was a hot-headed teenager, he used to get in the car after school and I'd say "how was maths" and he'd say "I hate Maths. Maths teacher is a d@ckhead". So I'd say "oh, how was French", and he'd say "I hate French. French teacher is a d@ckhead. An so we would run down the various classes - all the same response. Eventually I would say to Seat Son, "well son, did you ever consider that the common denominator is you, so maybe you are the d@ckhead?"

My point is that when so many people just refuse to comply, perhaps it is time to re-consider what people are being asked to do? Sure when it was just a small number of people who did the wrong thing, it was reasonable to lay blame on them. But the civil disobedience is widespread, in many areas of many towns and cities, in many states and territories. So maybe it is not the people who are the d@ckheads here, but the authorities? YMMV.

Edited to add: Similar point to that raised in post 26297 above by @jb747

I also understand your point but I think the fair benchmark for civil disobedience is the 70% or 80% benchmark as that it is the point where risks are considered (scientifically?) acceptable (even though as people know I'm very concerned for kids that don't have eligibility to any vaccine).

The next 12-16 weeks will feel interminable.

For the Western NSW cluster, I'm not aware of any confirmed link being mentioned. My best guess is Orange. The Tamworth exposure sites (no cases I believe) doesn't seem to have sprouted any wings.

There was also a "local" rumour that Sydney Census people were in the area - clearly essential work. So that would be my next best guess.

On the positive news I did see them saying over 1000 jabs had happened as at yesterday. But there are over 100 active cases in the area.

Dozens of guests at an engagement party held in breach of Melbourne’s strict lockdown laws have been handed staggering fines.

The 69 people who attended the party in Caulfield, where guests openly mocked restrictions, will be slugged $5500 each.

“That’s over $350,000 worth of fines, so it’s an expensive engagement party,” Police Commissioner Shane Patton told reporters on Monday.

“That’s what we’re going to be doing moving forward.”

Footage of the event, which was allegedly held last week, prompted outrage after it was circulated online.

Did I hear correctly that 9 cases have come from the party now?

Yes good that they bare vaccinating more now. Sadly I think it takes 2 to 3 weeks to start to gain appreciable protection.

…. because he’s been so successful in stopping the spread to date.

Usually you provide more inside case numbers......

Where did you hear?

At 2pm according to Jeroen Weimar it was one new case today at the party, on top of the 2 prior. But it 4 hours on, and so more results could have come in.

Its been a week, right? So probably all their households have had a 100% strike rate now.

The case from Bathurst Jail travelled to Walgett via Dubbo and is the source of the cases in Walgett.

I had ABC on in the background and thought I heard them mention it but I didn’t catch the whole grab of it so perhaps I misheard. That’s why I’m asking if it was mentioned anywhere

"Now is probably not the time for federal parliament to return."

I would argue the exact opposite. At least if they developed outcomes to improve the situation in the nation going forward.
The Victorian government have suspended sittings of the lower house in Victoria under the advice of the CHO.

They don't have the numbers to stop the upper house from sitting, so it is going ahead tomorrow.

That is a good thing in my opinion. It forces the government to recognise they have to be answerable to the community.
