NSW Health confirms outbreak in oncology ward at St George hospital

New South Wales authorities say several patients and staff members at a southern Sydney hospital's oncology ward have tested positive to COVID-19.

Three patients and two staff members at St George Hospital in Kogarah contracted the virus. The hospital is treating all patients in the ward as close contacts.

What happens if the outbreak in Sydney or Melbourne gets completely out of control? Say 20,000 cases each per day, and every major hospital is Tier 1 outbreak territory. Do they just close them all and let people heading to hospital fend for themselves and die in carparks? Do they eventually call it and treat in infected area's as best they can? Call in medical staff with COVID if fit to work and plow on. Has hospital armageddon been war gamed?

Wow, that's really alarmist. It's not going to happen. Both cities are in full lockdown.

Sydney might crack 1000 cases a day in a month or so but NSW will get to 80% single jab by then (33 days today) and will get to 80% double jab within another 2 months. The vaccinations will also reduce the chances of it spreading in addition to significantly reducing hospitalisation and death.

Presumably all of a persons’ details are taken at testing sites. What’s left of my military mind says that whilst they’re having their swab, they could be having an injection too. No point in wasting time or opportunity.

Not saying that is likely, but you always have to at least think worst case. NSW will definitely be in the thousands by the end of the month. No Australian state will get to 80% fully vaxxed by end of this year, and seriously I doubt any Australian state or territory will ever get to 80% fully vaxxed.

We should be going down the older avenue of 80% fully vaxxed 70+, and maybe 50% 16-69. That is somewhat achievable, unless Government really use the stick mentality and have compulsory vaccination passports for everyday things, not just travel/restaurants/sporting events, really going down the line to include supermarkets and smoke shops.

No it won't. Look past the media hype and look at the numbers, the Reff is around 1.3.

At current trends numbers will be around 650 by the end of the month.

Please stop spreading such alarmist claims.

We'll see on 80% of double jabs. In terms of capacity NSW will get there by end of November, as long as people keep turning up. I think they'll get there. States like WA and QLD, I'm not so sure.

What about bottle shops?

I'm curious what you think is so different about Australia when the UK is sitting on the numbers below (18+).

Australia is much more like the UK, than say, the US...where vaccination is a political issue.

Interesting article quoting Prof Ian Hickie about lockdown fatigue, individual v pro-social decision making, leadership vacuums, impact of “police action” and mental health impacts of the pandemic. Can’t really disagree with what he says. Seems to me that he is calling for, as many here have too, is clearer, more focused messages and better political leadership at all levels of government.

He explains that people’s actions eg engagement part, pub crawls, general defiance, are a way of people feeling that they have some control and agency, and that this is normal and predictable behaviour in situations like a pandemic.

Cracks are appearing in Melbourne's lockdown compliance but there is cause for optimism

I understood it is not recommended to vaccinate people with symptoms so that would rule out a portion kf thise at testing sites. Plus you dont want potentially sick people infecting well people doing the right thing by getting vaccinated.

Proper workplace programs did finally start yesterday with DHL vaccinating their drivers at their depot.

And last week every HSC student vaccinated at Qudos arena was offered a covid test on the way out (reverse of what you are proposing).

I am indeed seeing more online references to mental health in all ages including young children. And some notable sad suicides of youngish men in their forties who have had no work and in protracted shutdowns.

Any stats available on what percentage accepted?

Pop-ups offering both vaccination and testing have been used in the current Vic Outbreak.

Firstly at Al Taqwa, and then also in the west for other affected schools.

Eligible to get tested and vaccinated (subject to age) at each pop-up were all family of students, as well as the staff.
There were 2500 students and staff. Not sure what the numbers would be for adult family members.
From memory about 1500 people took up the option to get vaccinated.

Workplace vaccination programs in commercial settings in NSW have been up and running for some weeks in essential worker settings such as freight distribution and grocery. ie Woolworths amongst others.

In select healthcare and select other locations it has been occurring since vaccination commenced.

If he had been born in any other state his state citizenship would have been rescinded by now. NSW still refers to its citizens as Australians. A bit old-fashioned but there you go.
Maybe it’s just about the words. Victorians, Queenslanders, Tasmanians, Ken Behrens (good job Ken Behrens!), Territorians and even South/Western Australians are much easier to say than New South Welshwomen and men 😆

Edit: to add link relating to Ken Behrens. A good laugh.

One death, late 70s, unvaccinated.

Yawn, more talk of ongoing restrictions at 80%.
