Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I have been lobbying my state member and the health minister for dental services to be reopened to the fully vaxxed.

Fortunately as I have been having a series of dental appointments, with another this Friday, dentists have continued to operate throughout the recent Vic Lockdowns.

At my last appointment while I was fully AZ vaccinated, my dentist was still awaiting his second AZ dose which he will have had by this Friday.

So it will be my first fully (as in patient and dental team) vaxxed dental treatment session this Friday.

I’m in VIC not NSW, but the thing I’d want most is outdoor dining. The weather is getting better and that seems like low risk and the ability to meet with friends for a vaxxed meal in the sunshine (or even in horizontal rain) would be most welcome right now.
I reckon this will come for the end of September at this rate - nice to coincide with AFL and NRL grand finals and the October public holiday.

My wish list is simple. Free movement between States. If not free, consistent restrictions that can be worked with.

Sounds sensible. I wonder if this will be a part of NSW’s relaxation?

Queensland pausing domestic arrivals for 2 weeks unless you have a compassionate exemption. After that, you will be required to book your hotel quarantine.

Apparently 5100 in HQ at the moment in Brisbane. Where was this capacity the last 18 months to help with international arrivals?

Edit: Confirming this does apply to QLD residents returning home

Between enforcing that and the Queensland Border I wouldnt want to be a Queensland Police Service officer. Imagine the Overtime bill...

Last night on C9 news in Sydney it was stated that by this time in 2019 NSW Health had recorded over 81k flu cases. So far in 2021 the number was either 64 or 84!

So Covid prevention measures - masks, social distancing, etc. doing a great job in reducing flu cases.
As a (former) frequent traveller to Japan, I have long lauded their habit of public making wearing at the slightest sign of a sniffle, and have readily adopted that approach myself. In fact, the masks I used at the start of this whole thing we’re ones I had bought in the 100 yen shops of Tokyo for exactly that purpose. I personally don’t find a surgical mask too much of an embuggerance and would love it if we adopted sensible mask wearing as a social value here in Australia for the future. I’ve lost had the flu at least twice in my life despite flu shots, and would definitely prefer never to have it again.

It just delays the season.
Look at this it shows the presentations for Bronchiolitis in kids 3rd graph down.

When everyone was staying at home, social distancing etc the normal winter peak never arrived. It came with a vengeance in summer though.
This is part of what the UK strategy is said to be for their “Freedom Day”. A recognition that they would have increases in Covid cases and subsequent hospitalizations but that the wave would be over before their winter flu season.

And in a similar vein, I read somewhere (now can’t recall where) about some viral illness (can’t recall which one) that was rampant in kids in Vic over summer for the same reasons. As my kids would say, good story mum 🤣🤣

The point was that the Vic kids didn’t get whatever it was whilst they were locked down, but it was still endemic in the community, and as soon as they came out, they all got it in a big rush. There was also some commentary about the kids having reduced immunity because of lack of exposure. I’ll search to see if I can find the original news item.

919 for NSW. In line with the trend.

Still quite a lot of cases in regional NSW, hard to see the statewide lockdown not being extended.

Their level of spread after locking down surprises me. I couldn't think of a more WFH enabled, risk averse, relatively homogenous both economically and socially, well educated and news aware population than the ACT.
In fairness, 25 of yesterday’s ACT cases were household contacts of earlier cases, and we have a lot of school kids infected (over 40 cases from just one high school) so I suspect it is probably the infection spreading in households. Only 11 active in community.

That said, I don’t think we re coming out of lockdown on 2 Sep by any means.

You may mean the run on gastro. This was in part thought have been due to hand sanitiser being used instead of soap and water. Hand sanitiser is not not as effective for preventing gastro.

RSV, perhaps?

Dr Lucy Morgan (respiratory specialist in Western Sydney) is explaining what people feel when they get covid. It’s a little disturbing. She said her intent is that people transfer their anxiety of getting the vaccine to anxiety of getting covid.

Families speak out over multiple COVID-19 outbreaks in New South Wales hospitals

Twenty per cent of COVID-related deaths in NSW this year have occurred due to outbreaks in public hospitals, amid growing concerns of serious flaws in the state's hospital system.

Seventy-five people across NSW have died since the beginning of the Delta outbreak, according to the latest health department statistics. Sixteen of those people who died were patients who acquired COVID-19 during their hospitalisation.

That's why hospitals are categorised the same as aged care........but at the moment like aged care workers, not 100% of hospital workers will be vaccinated (yet).

Oh dear, yet another state locking its residents out from their home, families, jobs, lives. We have sunk so very low, it’s hard to see how our society will ever recover. I am so disillusioned to realise that the Australia I loved and served proudly in the ADF is not real, and tht the Australian people as represented by their elected politicians are a bunch of fearful NIMBYs with no compassion or empathy.
