Sadly....yes I can completely understand. I am also fearful that continued vaccination mandates will undermine the role our primary healthcare system plays in supporting all of our community without discrimination. I'm increasingly concerned at the long term damage that may be done in Victoria, even if I'm agreeable to the current situation.

The precedent is a serious issue. Even the way we’re carrying on now about remaining hysterical until 90% vaccination and even then just lowering it to mild panic. A huge amount of perspective has been lost. Doesn’t set us up well for future viruses.

ICU bed per day circa $5000 minimum. That’s about 60 PCR tests per day.
Typical ICU Covid stay 14-30 days
Hospital stay for patients who did not need ICU about 7-10 days
For the sake of saving a few PCR tests?
Don’t forget that treatments for Covid have improved and work better if given early to patients who require hospitals. In extremis might be too late. Suggest earlier.

Don’t worry, PCR testing is the possibly the least costly part of the Covid response

3 most common comorbidity in ICU Covid:
40% obesity
28% diabetes
24% hypertension treated with ACE inhibitors
20% chronic cardia disease

36% no comorbidity

I'd be getting a simple oxygen test kit in prep and monitoring that. In reality, that is all known (tested) positive people will get at home anyway.

Well, UK family have been using them for almost 12 months now and find them very helpful and they use them correctly, which I'm assuming if you are prepared to buy them then you will use them as is their correct purpose.

Hopefully the VIC daily case numbers are starting to stabilise. 4 of the last 5 days have been around 1500 after the previous few days were over 2000. Another day or two around 1500 and it'd be looking promising that the numbers are starting to stabilise.

Case numbers are a leading indicator of what hospitalisation and ICU numbers will look like so hopefully that trend will continue, however we're still to see the full effect of some of the 2000+ case days, I suspect.

Well, colour me cynical. If 10% of users who get a positive test at home think "gee, that's unfortunate. I can either go into self isolation or I can do as planned. ( Go to footy, meet friends, go shopping, take a flight)" and then choose "ignore unfortunate result", then I think it's a societal and health outcome fail.

I mean how good are "good people" at self regulating and obeying rules? Like going over the speed limit?

I’m going with the concept that if we aim for perfect we will fail.

People may well (in fact, likely) be fully symptomatic yet never ever test. Likely not get vaxxed. Can’t do anything about those. They won’t bother with this test either. They just don’t care. It’s a bust. They will only get tested if they need urgent medical treatment. This test will not change that scenario.

However the self test will certainly pick up many who have a conscience to aid society and their family.
