Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

The mask in SA airspace makes me laugh. NSW has the same restriction. Not sure exactly how state police are going to enforce this with their air wings...
They wait as you walk up the ramps to exit.

Not exactly airspace then...

On the matter of masks a QF Flight attendant for National Jet just lost her unfair dismissal case. Being a FA or pilot and claiming a medical exemption would be a tricky process as most medical conditions that would allow you an exemption from mask wearing would make you also unsuitable to be a pilot or FA as well.

"Jessica Watson of Brisbane, accused National Jet Systems, which is part of the Qantas Group, of unfair dismissal after she was told she would have to undergo an independent medical examination to support her claim of being unable to wear a mask."

That practice is common for other medico-legal or medico-occupational issues.

For example workers compensation claims are assessed by independent assessors and not just the patient’s medical practitioner.

It can be a grey area though- to what extent should matters of certificates and claims be adjudicated by an independent?.

Sick certificates?
Mobility parking stickers?

BTW I am not aware of a case of a healthcare worker not being able to wear a mask. And qualification to work in the area at initial entry after training does not require demonstration of such ability unlike a requirement for other skills. It’s not even a skill.

I would have thought being a flight attendant is subject to a raft of fitness for duty requirements so Qantas would be on solid ground here.

Sick certificates are tricky however I have had two employees exhaust their sick leave so once that happens they go for an independent medical examination. Surprisingly, both resigned once we started down that path.

They can't do anything else, can they! They don't have the powers. It's next best.

Possibly but really it’s only an issue now for the unvaccinated, for the vaccinated it doesn’t really matter I guess whether it’s 300 or 3000.
It still sort of does from a disruption to people's lives aspect. Even though my symptoms are mild I've still spent 14 days in Covid-Jail which has disrupted a lot of plans... and I'm fortunate that I am able to work from home.

The less spread the better.

Thanks. The point more was that in their advice to arrivals by air, they specify certain behaviours and mask wearing, but not others. Maybe they mighty even provide the same link as you did?

Have to say though that all states are ambiguous in their advice. The Tas Premier always used to say " if you have spent any time in Victoria ... [you'll have to quarantine etc]". It wasn't true. They allowed transit by driving through three states to board the Spirit, transiting the airport or even overnighting at an airport hotel!

There's a multi-day upward trend almost every week.

Yes and the 7 day average is down

Suspect the spread is bigger than the numbers are telling given the amount of asymptomatic now with the high vaccination levels…

…so perhaps the less ‘positive tests recorded’ is more accurate in terms of the disruption that you are unfortunately incurring!

Albury Wodonga had largely be spared from covid, with a very few cases over the last couple of years, and virtually no local transmission. All the damage here was inflicted by politicians. But, it’s arrived here now, with cases on both sides of the border. It’s almost totally confined to children though, which I guess is to be expected given that they haven’t been vaccinated. Hopefully something that will change sooner rather than later. It is actually a race.

The upshot of that is that I had to go have my first test today, as one of our neighbours kids has been selected as a winner. We’re not close contacts, which is good, so testing is simple enough, though the mechanism still seems problematic. I joined the queue at 6:45, and came out the other end two hours later. The only issue was an obvious one. They’re using single lane testing with no ability to remove cars that are done, or are problematic. The woman who had a car full of children, who all put on chook acts because they didn’t want to be tested caused a lengthy delay, and I’m sure that’s not uncommon. The nurses doing the testing were as wonderful as you’d expect, with patience far beyond mine.

a raft of fitness for duty requirements
An aviator might be able to discuss the requirements for a CASA Class 1 Medical certificate (which is required for an ATPL license)

I believe it is CASA who issues the certificate, not the Dr, and medical exams are done by DAME - designated aviation medical examiners?
