Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Saw McGowan boasting he thinks it Delta and not Omicron which is funny because Omicron will have far less chance of clogging hospital system.

I happened to see McGowan's live announcement because my son was watching as he may have been an indirect contact through a workmate who went to a nightclub attended by the French backpacker and he was debating whether to get tested.

I would hardly characterise Marko's tone, in reading verbatim from a prepared typescript, as "boasting". The statement merely said words to the effect that because the guy had left Queensland before Omicron was recorded in the community there, the presumption at this stage was that it was more likely to be Delta than Omicron.

Maybe that's too bad, as the sooner Omicron rips everywhere, very likely the better...

Delivery of boosters will be a major logistical issue. I booked my 5 month booster yesterday and the earliest date I could get was Jan 21 which is actually 5 months and 3 weeks. Making people eligible at 3 months won't mean anything unless delivery capability is massively scaled up.
Don't know about the situation in Sydney, but plenty of slots at Priceline pharmac_ here in Melbourne. I randomly clicked on Box Hill this morning and there's even availability today. Covid 19 Vaccination

Ok I clicked Blacktown as a test and there are slots on 31/12: Priceline pharmac_ Blacktown Calendar

But you know I'm referencing WA where there is a heat wave right now in the 40's. No RAT and they've been covid free for months and very few restrictions. So entirely relevant for their situation. While it might be deep into the pandemic for most, for WA it's like they are just starting. Tracing is relevant for them at this stage so people's movements are important to monitor until their vaccination rates are higher. 🤷‍♀️ Was their Government right? I guess in five years time we might know.
At last, someone with enough insight to speak of WA as it should be spoken of. Thank you, Pushka. I was thinking seriously about unsubscribing from many threads because of the incessant negativity about WA. We have enjoyed virtually no locally acquired Covid, hardly any lockdowns, hardly any restrictions and a booming economy. What more could anyone want?

Don't know about the situation in Sydney,

Plenty of appointments available in Sydney at the State run hubs like Olympic Park, I had zero issue booking exactly 5 months to the hour from dose 2. Helped an older family friend book her booster yesterday, could have gone yesterday arvo, but she isnt due til next week, so again booked exactly 5 months out.

All 3 local pharmacies are also allowing walk-ups, one was out the front spruiking this morning to take advantage of all the christmas traffic to the Fish shop next door for prawns.

The bigger challenge right now is for thos of us who need a test tomorrow, virtally none of the private lab ones are open, means the hospital test sites will be busier than usual.

Also RAT kits should work out $10/test (chemist warehosue sells a 5 pack for $49 or 3 * 2 pack for $60) but a warning that Pharamcy for Less (claims to be a discount chemist but isnt) is price goughing charging $65 for 5 test pack - of source they have hundres available because no one is willing to be ripped off that badly, where as Chemist Warehouse is limiting sales.

the presumption at this stage was that it was more likely to be Delta than Omicron.

Well if Delta then more likely to see serious illness, so should be a lot more worried than if its Omicron. Still odd that unvaccinated people can enter from Queensland, yet only vaccinated people from ACT, NSW and Vic. Vaccination rates and pre-departure tests means the risk of sneaking virus in from the south eastern states is lower than from Queensland.

Its more than time to let Omicron rip.

SA has genome sequencing capacity of 50 (per day?) - has estimated 70% is Omicron. Deferred further relaxations

688 positives, 20k tests, 8 hospital, 1 ICU

We get it NSW is the best at everything

Not the point at all, but adjusting for population SA should be able to sequence a lot more than 50 test a day. That really low rate wont even enable them to sequence hospitalised cases soon, and those are the ones that need sequencing.

Looks suspiciously like they may be sending interstate for processing, rather than doing themselves. If this is the case i suspect its Vic putting the limit on them (some karma for all the unecessary pre-departure testing Im sure).

That’s not the case at all but feel free to guess and take pot shots as always

Pot, Kettle, Black!

If SA are processing themselves why cant they do even 0.01% of what NSW was doing?

To be able to leave the state and come back home?
To finally unite with families interstate and overseas?
Personally I would like to see my livelihoods more secure and predictable as my employment is in WA and base is Gold Coast. Haven't seen growing family for months hurts....

It is safe to say if whole your life just inside WA and any of above not remotely on agenda.
But there are too many ppl around who really straggling with WA's cruel covid zero mindset this far into pandemic. At current vaccination rate WA borders should be opened immediately.

backpacker arriving on the 12th, mixing in the community (nighclub, bar etc last Sat/Sun) and now positive.
Like it or not, this guy at least has a potential to become local West hero for liberating WA and helping the state to finally move on.

We obviously aren’t as flushed as NSW for resources but the aim is to sequence only those requiring hospitalisation. At the moment they are also doing some random testing whilst we have the capabilities but once hospitalisations increase all focus will turn to them. Has never been a intent to genome sequence every case and nor should it

Based 5 minutes of talkback radio yesterday (all I could handle), people are certainly not thinking of him as a hero.

As much as Mark tried to deflect the international border to being a federal issue, he is getting plenty of flak for 'allowing this backpacker in while my [insert family member here] couldn't come home from [vic/nsw] for christmas'.

No presser yet or confirmation of additional WA cases but a handful more exposure sites have been added to the list.

The government have made a real error in judgement and people are seriously angry about it. A cursoury look at social media concurs with your statement.

With the SA outbreak months ago (associated with pizzagate) wasn't that also a visa holder? Don't remember how that ended up (deported or refused permit to stay longer)......Wonder what pressure will be on the French backpacker.

Just takes time for ppl to realize. Whole mentality should change for ppl made to believe in covid zero for so long. And this is not fast and easy process....

Now one blaming that limo driver or removalists, if not them whole thing could be much longer with almost certainly no international family visits to Christmas.
So personally I am thankful for them by now.
