Our local age care facility just advised immediate rapid antigen test req at entry
Acquaintance called back in early after xmas day to facilitate rapid design and crash build several emergency medical care facilities in qld
There may be no staff because existing facilities cannot cope now...but at least the really sick will have somewhere to languish.
The covid party is about to become very interesting indeed
Good luck to them. Hopefully it works out, sounds like a tough job.

I'll ask again though why this wasn't planned for/done at some point in the last, say, 2 years.

If WA had said they would open to the other states around the middle of January then Perth could of held the 5th test now WA is made to look silly. I am surprised that the backpacker was able to enter WA without being vaccinated, WA were talking about it but it looks like it wasn’t implemented.

Surprised NSW and Vic numbers stayed steady.

When the backpacker entered WA, Qld was at the Very Low Risk level. There was no requirement to be vaccinated.

I suspect the numbers will not vary much from here. Given the sheer volume of unnecessary asymptomatic testing clogging up the system, the current rate is probably at the upper end of what we will find in the community.

How did the armchair experts identify the backpacker as the index case anyway? Preemptive telepathic genomic sequencing?

Well, there has been no suggestion from the government that he wasn't the index case...

I suspect, post Christmas, people will give up anyway. I went on a grand tour of Sydney today to try to find an open testing station (for my paid intl travel test) and the first two were closed and ended up spending about 3 hours waiting for the open one. Nobody is going to keep playing this game.

I would expect the numbers to be somewhat higher by next Wed/Thurs, after this weekend's parties, etc.

Will be interesting to see who's closest....

Some nasty Xmas Eve news from my Sibling's child's pre-school

Got told this morning that another child in the 3yo preschool class had tested positive twice using RATs. Child has done a PCR as well but results in Sydney mostly taking 48-72hrs at the moment, so they are treating themselves as a close contact over Xmas.

On the plus side, PCR test came back super quickly for the relevant child after being told of positive RAT and childcare setting and asked to expedite (under 24hrs when many Sydney tests are currently 72+)

On the downside.. it was positive (but at least they aren't isolating over Xmas with a risk that PCR might be negative)

So it's a smaller Xmas day for me and parents and Facebook Messenger using Portals over Xmas lunch.

Interestingly Health advice is that the parents are not close contacts until the child tests positive so could go out. Of course in the abundance of caution (and looking after a 3yo) they won't.

It's going to alright in Perth. St Marko has arranged divine intervention to cook that pesky Covid stuff:

🥵 o_O

:p :p

Sure it will cook any covid lying around on an outside surface…. But it will drive everyone inside to closed indoors with aircon in close proximity to one another pumping covid all around the place. Merry Christmas!

Thank the lord that is now dead, buried and cremated.
It’s still wriggling

Why are you doing this test?
Can only think of 2 reasons:
1) contact tracing verification
2) epidemiological studies and variant surveillance

1) only in specific cases is this necessary
2) can sample rather than sequence everyone.
Other than that absolutely no change to management of patient.

Australia Top 20 on day globally we had highest ever daily total,
The only reason to be fixated on daily totals is because the CovidZero mentality is alive and well.

to ask for police who are skilled at interviewing, as opposed to tracers who comprised of people who'd never done anything like this before, to do exactly the same. YMCV.
AU contraire
Australia has world class contact tracing training and the programs are used by other jurisdictions all over the world.

Police are actually the wrong people to contact trace. This article explains why.

Some data points on regional Victoria testing conducted Thursday morning:
- Geelong, tested about 11:50am, results returned at 4:40 am (just under 17 hrs) - Day 5 testing after arriving internationally. This was my 3rd test in 8 days. (1 overseas, 2 in Vic), hopefully no more until mid-Jan when I travel back home.
- Mildura - tested about 9am, as of midnight Friday (39 hrs) - no results

Unfortunately #2 means that my brother and his family won't be joining us for Christmas lunch, as it's a 5 hr drive. Hopefully results will come through before Boxing Day for Christmas2.0 instead.
