Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Given testing queues and rule changes not sure of the veracity (or value) of no of cases anymore. Hospitalisations more important and seem to be increasing rapidly (and unfortunately likely to keep doing so). ICU admissions would seem to be next as experience shows they lag hospital admissions.
Yes the current trend in NSW is not good news for all of Australia.

In another two weeks or so we should have a better feel for what the flow through rate for ICU/ventilators and deaths will be.

It certainly seems to be less virulent, but being more contagious in a population where so few have had covid combined with very low public health interventions may see it do more damage healthwise than delta did in Australia.

By the end of Jan we will know a lot more.

On the upside more and more people will be getting their booster. On the downside the unvaxxed in Australia will be exposed more than at any time so far in the pandemic.

True but if ICUs are full of unvaccinated then I don't care about those individuals, they made their choice. Hopefully that doesn't impact on everyone else with more restrictions due to their decisions.

All this "we will see on hospitals" etc is a bit of a distraction thought isn't it? There is plenty of data from Europe to guide us as to what will happen.

I can assure you that trying to impose public health interventions will be *deeply* unpopular which is why they are off the table.

People will feel lied to as to why they got vaccinated.

That's all very simplistic, isn't it? And surely not everyone is dumb enough not to see that omicron is different.

After all, the pollies are stressing this in their defence...

No need to assure me as I was just commenting on what is the situation at present.

However there are public health interventions in place at present. Low level ones, apart from WA. So obviously not off the table.

No no. Australians know better so what happened elsewhere doesn’t matter 🙄

You might not care but they are what dictates public health policy.

There's a range of interventions between do nothing, and have a lockdown.
Like SA now likely to ban all but emergency elective surgery.

Perhaps. But let’s remember this isn’t about a virus anymore, it’s extremely political. I can’t see the public tolerating long term restrictions because the antivaxers are holding us back.

The vaccination rates in SA are extremely difficult to extract and remember just six weeks ago we'd been free of Covid for almost six months so sadly Stockholm syndrome has kicked in and some are scared by now over 2000 a day.

And practically, what exactly can Joe Blow do if surgeries are banned. No one is going to demonstrate about that. Whether or not the driving force here is politics, the outcome is the same.

The anti vaxxers can take their own medicine, I don't care about them either but their presence is screwing around with everyone else's freedoms.

The most recent NSW figures (mid December) are not really that comforting - 19% of new hospital are fully vaxxed, over 50% of new ICU (but a small number so trend could go either way) are fully vaxxed. Not sure when NSW Health will measure based on 3rd dose/booster.

The next two weeks surveillance reports will be interesting because Omicron should be in full swing.

But I believe that most in ICU are still delta. NSW are saying only 1 death so far confirmed to be from Omicron.

It sure is different, it’s much milder (conversion from hospitalisation -> intensive care is less than 10% compared to delta at about 60%).

Those unvaccinated though - good luck to them as it’s much more contagious, in the words of my state premier it will ‘seek out and try to kill’ those not vaccinated.

Those unvaccinated though
The vast majority will recover
Likely will get the virus from the vaccinated ones

The anti vaxxers can take their own medicine, I don't care about them

It’s a slippery slope when we start to think like that. We should care, and continue to advocate for them to be vaccinated.

Once we insert morality into healthcare, health outcomes deteriorate

Antivaxxers and even Ivan Milat before he died still get treated in the same way as anyone else

We have are friends with a very large family group who remain unvaccinated.
They are intelligent, educated and have made informed choices.
Their "left field" status does not change a 30+ year friendship, but we are deeply saddened for their situation.
