Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I suspect the money printing is not what it was.

They used to get $$ per test.
Batch it in 64.
And with a sub 2% +ve rate at least half the batches only required 1 test.
If you have a positive in the batch you split into 4s and retest 12 times for one positive for example.

With +ve rates hitting something like 20% that scale benefit breaks down and suspect your almost better off testing every sample individually
I asked my brother about this as he was previously a covid specific lab supervisor for one of the major pathology companies. Bang on the money, he says you do gain by not having the complexity of batch testing but then your capacity drops significantly as you test individually. Bad situation.

As he didn’t have anywhere suitable, he was sent to the medi hotel.

I think we have a mutual friend who is currently in quarantine in the Pullman.

Personally I think I lucked in at Castle Hill this morning. 3 hours and PCR test done. Now for the wait to receive results.

Symptoms seen similar to a mild cold and not dissimilar to my previous brush with covid way back in March 2020. Hope it is just a cold unlike last time.

Isolated from rest of household as best as I can and all are currently well.

The Opposition Leader is into Day 2 and said if he wasn't positive he feels fine with just a scratchy throat and would go to work. Police Commissioner also day 2 and feels fine and continues to work (lead SA) from home. Both have had their booster, maybe about two weeks ago and the PC is about retirement age so a little older, but looks a fit person.

I played footy against Malinauskas so he would be early to mid 40’s, the Commish is nearing 70 but still very fit and active. I think both should be fine

It will send everyone here a great message if they remain well. Nearing 70 - he looks in good nick then, and if it doesn't spread to family members then another good sign.

Young with minimal symptoms stay at home. They will be looked after by the Covid@home program. Even interstaters with risk factors and in theit 70s can do so. I was on for the program on Sunday and was informed by public Health south that a couple with covid were allowed to isolate in their campervan and were going to move into the North Health District.
They were in Hobart at the time but live on the north coast near Devonport, so couldn’t go home. They were staying somewhere in Hobart at the time. Even if she was allowed to drive three hours to return home, the house is small with only one bathroom. That would surely mean the parents would have to isolate too? Besides which, even fully vaccinated, my brother is in the at risk category from medical issues.

today nationally we probably gonna be over 50K cases for the first time

Time to forget this ohmircon version.
The new one is Florona... Flu + covid

Probably just under unless SA comes in with 5.5k positives. But yes, sign of the times:

In one day/today:
- NSW about 1/12 of all recorded positives in that jurisdiction during the pandemic (to date)
- Vic about 1/15
- Qld almost 1/5
- ACT about 1/7
- Tas almost 1/3

and probably/possibly

- SA about 1/10
- NT about 1/9-1/10

Which makes us very comparable to UK statistics.
UK was about 50k in early Dec, now over 100k since just before Christmas. I expect Australia to be not too far behind. Just wondering how far we are behind South Africa getting to their peak - does Australia wait a further week, fortnight, ...

Edit: but just worked out - yes UK comparable based on per capita basis.

In SA the peak is expected at end of January but Premier won't release the numbers expected.

Gotta say I am very impressed with my employer, they have extended eligibility for on-site testing to include PCR (after positive/non-conclusive RAT), and opened up to testing on your day off if symptomatic. This will be costing them an absolute fortune but still minimal compared to the additional overtime if people are off for a week waiting for a test result.

Thats a DEFINITE NO !! And there is a lot more to being a doctor on a cruise ship than taking temps and some paperwork !!
