I guess I must be one of them? OK, not really hysteria (!), but can you advise us how old you might be (+/-5 yrs).

Birthday not Aug 1960? What then?

Yes, you’re certainly behaving that way. I’m sorry your mother died, but you don’t seem to be able to move past that. 2022 with a 95% vaccinated population is very different to 2020 when we had a far poorer understanding of this virus.

I’m in my late 30s, not that it matters, as the vaccine is virtually 100% effective across all age groups.

And I am 75 yet find myself mostly in agreement with what you say. And that is even though I could be exposed at work. i am not on a Covid ward but the Medical Consultant in ED. Patients are triaged but sometimes things slip through the cracks as it did last week. Patient admitted from a disability home.. Non verbal so history came from a carer who only after being allowed into ED said she had been diagnosed positive 2 days previously. Still doesn't worry me as in full PPE. Now 6 days later and still no problem.

I'm happy to agree with the post you are replying to and can confess to being late 50's. Are you able to elaborate on why age is relevant to the question? Not stirring in any way. Just genuinely interested in discussion about media presentation of covid.

As you say, there is no hysteria.

There will continue to be diminishing interest until the Southern Hemisphere winter.

If the next variant in winter is the same mildness as Omicron (ie vaccines have similar effectiveness, hospital/ICU get to similar peaks) then the media and some state governments might be able to move away from daily reporting. For example, it appears suspending ‘elective’ surgery wasn’t actually needed but there were staffing issues re household contact.

On the flip side, if the Winter variant has a significantly worse impact eg ramping, ICU exceeds private capacity, younger demographics with no significant comordities dying in high number, then media frenzy will be fed. But this scenario is rather unlikely - probably need a Delta deadliness + original/Alpha no vaccine effectiveness + Omicron spread.
