Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

It's interesting the objections being raised to a voluntary app designed to save lives where your location is not being traced, just the proximity to an infected person after 15min and no data is transmitted from the phone until a specific infection contact has been detected.

Every day hundreds to thousands of times per day 24/7 >92% of the population is being tracked whether they like it or not by $B multinational firms as to their location within a few metres, their friends, relatives and acquaintances recorded, their various preferences in shopping, their private correspondence being recorded and analysed, their voice prints moods and comments being recorded, other firms and persons being advised of their actions preferences and purchases - but that's all perfectly ok 🙄

Or as per the cartoon in today's Australian (which is inaccurate of course, in its description of the app):

I won't be downloading any app that is a data and/or battery hog.
I never have Bluetooth turned on unless I actively need to use it, and that has only ever been to share internet between phone and tablet while in the BA T5 F lounge when one device has refused to connect to the wifi.
I never have GPS turned on unless I am actively using it.

From what I know about the apps under discussion, you won't have a problem with it. You will need Bluetooth, but the app will only use it for a microsecond to detect that you've been next to other phone X, and will then only 'pair' and interact with another device where you have given it active permission. I've never detected any battery performance issue in having Bluetooth on all day (iPhone). The app doesn't use GPS - it only records proximity to another person, with the app, who is close.

I won't download the apps work wants people to use on my phone because I won't be using my data for work reasons unless work wants to pay for said data.

I assume you never do anything except 'work' while at work and being paid for work? :) Like personal calls, personal internet etc on the company's time? (Apologies - not having a go, I just thought it an odd thing to say).

I don't have any issue with the app. If you don't think you've already been tracked when using the Internet, well, you don't use the Internet. And when this is over, delete it.

And which is worse, the Australian government department of health tracking your fleeting proximity to others, or a California or Seattle based private corporation tracking your movement, relationships, wants, desires, hopes, aspirations and transactions and even listening to you in your home ??

Good day for NSW. Only 10 cases reported.
Not so for Vic with 17.

Of the Vic numbers, reported elsewhere that 7 of those from Greg Mortimer cruise ship, and 9 from other quarantined people - so only 1 community infection.

Given Greg Mortimer was estimated to have most of the 80 pax infected, would assume there will be some more big 'headline' numbers over coming days, though not all will be Vic as I understand they should be allocated by normal residence

Police checks are now in place (checking for a valid reason) for people travelling into/out of BurnieView attachment 215204
Though yesterday police caught a couple from the North west shopping in the Launceston Spotlight. The rumour at the hospital was they had said they were going for medical treatment. The Lonnie police asked them where and they said at Outpatients-it was closed awhile ago.

The report I read has it as 9 including the 7, rather than in addition to.

Ms Mikakos said nine of the newly confirmed cases were those who had been placed into mandatory quarantine after returning from overseas, including seven people from the Greg Mortimer cruise ship.

I would actually see that as good for Victoria (and Australia) as that means only eight cases that could have spread to other people. And that is after only 1 yesterday

So I read that 17 as 8 new case in terms of what is the real risk factor.

ie
8local transmission
9 people in quarantine

People who are quarantined are not a significant risk. Local transmission cases are as there could be other cases still spreading. Quarantine cases should not spread unless there is a mistake made.

We could have cases in any state balloon by say 100 if we say flew back a plane load of evacuating Australians from NYC. But if so they all go into quarantine and so really are a not problem.

We almost need another category - "positive while in quarantine lock down".

Yes and those returning to Australia if managed properly are not really a significant threat. You can see as I did a jump up in daily cases and initially think oh bugga, only to read later that over half are not a local threat.

Exactly why people should go into state provided accommodation when entering Tas, the 98% compliance figure is fiction

Heard a rumour three planes loads of Aussies are on their way back from Bali in the next 24 hours.

Also reported from a friend Cairns people a bit frustrated because QLD police are giving warnings a couple times before taking action to fine etc, even for the most blatant ignoring of social distancing - like noisy/boozy parties of 20+ people over the Easter weekend.

No new cases in Adelaide today despite opening up testing to anyone even with just a mild sniffle. Just one yesterday. Counting down the time to the Easter period.

What lucky city will wear that lot?

Three more cases in W.A overnight. Of these, 2 were from the gift that keeps giving - the Artania Cruise ship (which is due to leave Fremantle tomorrow) and 1 person, described by the Premier as "selfish and irresponsible" who travelled to Bali in mid-March. Now down to 6 patients in ICU.

While I agree not all people would have complying with self-isolation given where we now are at with likely infections in Australia the inter and intrastate travel restrictions are now probably more of a hindrance than a help in terms of overall risk/benefit and I would expect to see them soon to be progressively wound back and especially the 14 day self-isolation interstate period removed. This is of course based on our local transmissions (ignore those new cases who are in quarantine) continuing to trend down.

Compulsory quarantine for anyone entering Australia should of course remain. Freight crews of ships and flights to be housed in special short term quarantined accommodation to allow them to come and go.

I wonder if these flights are being confused with 2 from India which are bound for Adelaide;

The Government is just sharing the CV19 love from returning Aussies around Australia.

Melbourne recently gianed the Mortimer passengers with their high CV rate.

SA to get the Indian returnees.....

Not sure which city will gain the Bali returnees?

There are still vast numbers of Aussies overseas and so these quarantines are going to keep happening for some time yet.

No new cases in Tas yesterday (but one more death :( ), but we are waiting on the results of hundreds of tests made on the nursing home residents of the three places that the infected health care worker had worked at.
