šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø Unless Victoria border is closed to people arriving from Sydney?

Maybe a diversionary tactic given the Inquiry issue.

Iā€™m not sure how they plan to exit Melbourne though to get back to NZ.
Iā€™d imagine most of them are there for a reunion with friends / family and likely planning on returning later on once the border between NSW and Victoria opens up.

Unless they're here for caregiving purposes, they can't see family and friends. None of us can so why should they be able to?

Interesting. So if they didnā€™t visit family but simply stayed as their current family unit that would be allowed? It seems their issue is simply that they are in Victoria.

Well New Zealanders are allowed into Sydney without quarantine.
People from Sydney are allowed to fly to Victoria. They even allow us naughty Queenslanders to fly there.
Don't see that the Kiwis have done anything wrong.
No the Kiwis havenā€™t but Border Force and the Feds did blindside the Victorian government. Not really the spirit of cooperation we should expect by now?

I would presume thatā€™s exactly the reason they are there and that they would reside with the friend/ family member and follow all of the current VIC govt restrictions. The same as any other travellers going to VIC from NSW.

Around the time this NZ arrangement was mentioned/announced, I came up with a nice little holiday for NZ arrivals. It didn't include hard border States (WA, Qld Tas) nor Victoria. But then I think dajop mentioned that if the person went to Victoria they might be let into NSW without quarantine for transit back to NZ.

If two "blind Freddies" on AFF can see it, the whole kerfuffle beggars belief.

I doubt they can travel interstate without permission or quarantine given all states are currently closed to Victoria.

Why?The kiwis legally arrived in Sydney.they didn't have to go into Quarantine so as soon as they had completed Immigration Border Force had no other responsibility. They don't have to declare where they are going unless they wanted to travel to WA,QLD or Tasmania but they then had to apply to the State Governments.

This might apply.....from Vic transiting NSW to go lawfully to another place outside NSW.

If you are transiting through NSW from Victoria
You can transit through NSW to another location. However you must enter NSW only if you have lawful authority to enter the place outside NSW to which you are travelling.

You will need to follow border entry rules and apply for a border entry permit.

Yep, so they could fly MEL-SYD-AKL and quarantine at the other end.

No they didnā€™t. The kiwis were permitted to enter NSW. From there they are treated like any other NSW resident.

No state in Australia, not even WA, is screening outbound domestic passengers. What did Vic expect NSW to do? If Vic are so concerned about who is entering their state then setup border controls like every other state.

Careful what you wish for. :D

Actually to return to AKL, NZ is operating and selling a regular flight (daily I think) from MEL-AKL. No need to transit SYD to return, as no restrictions on departures from VIC for non residents.

Anyone can arrive in Victoria from anywhere in Australia, provide they stay with family and friends and obey the same rules on movement as everyone else once they reach where they are staying. The specific rules (for Melbourne) state that " If a personā€™s ordinary place of residence is outside Victoria, the premises where that person is temporarily residing in Victoria during the stay at home period (or part thereof) is taken to be the personā€™s ordinary place of residence for the period (or part thereof)."

This applies to anyone arriving from other states (which is allowed), or overseas after 2 weeks quarantine in their arrival port.

I don't understand the fuss here. I do wonder if the reason they were alerted to this is that they were booked on a Jetstar through connection to MEL. If they had overnighted in SYD and took a Virgin flight the next morning, no-one would have been any wiser. Or taken a flight or the XPT to Albury, caught a taxi across the border to Wodonga station and took the Vline replacement bus to MEL, or hired a car at SYD and driven all the way, again probably no-one would have been any wiser.

Big day for Melbourne restrictions

The Herald Sun has already flagged some of the expected changes including; the number of people able to gather outdoors increased to as many as 10, the 5km restriction on travel will be widened to 20km and two-hour time limits for exercise or social activities will be scrapped.

It comes after Victoria recorded just one new coronavirus case and no new deaths for the reporting period yesterday.

Yesterday both Mr Andrews and chief health officer Brett Sutton warned that mystery cases remained a ā€œchallengeā€ for the state.

ā€œChasing up of mystery cases is critical,ā€ Professor Sutton said.

ā€œAll of the things that are in place for these restrictions are also an important part of driving the mystery cases down. They have typically been at about 10 per cent of our total cases right through. We are at a point where we only have a tiny handful of cases each day but the mystery cases are still averaging one a day.

ā€œThey are making up a bigger proportion of our daily total, in part because they are the hardest ones to find. Theyā€™re not so identifiable as the ones that we discover going through the close contact tracing process. That is a much more straightforward process.ā€

I don't understand the fuss here.

I think itā€™s less fuss more confusion / communication breakdown to be honest, even people on AFF werenā€™t 100% sure about the rules of the bubble and we after all are travel experts, armchair airline CEOs and part time epidemiologists :) šŸ˜‚

Another great news day all round for VIC.

2 cases.

Average drops to 7.5 for Melbourne and drops to 15 for the mystery case count as well.
