Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I work in a office with about 40 people. Two reps, who frequent stores where the masses congregate for a snag with no onions, just walked in and hugs and kisses to at least 10 of my coworkers.

I held my can of Glen20 and sprayed them away. Told them that they were unclean and to leave my vicinity and go wash their hands. In my defence, I have been spraying and saying this for years so nothing new for me.

So technically they broke the social distancing rule which is not advised.

The rest is quite funny but hopefully you are feeling better today :)

Just had words with Rep who was hugging someone else. Reminded all that we're not even suppose to be shaking hands so WTF are you doing hugging.

And then I sprayed Rep with Glen20 and told them to go away.

Do you think that you could install one of your security videos at work so we could all see you in action? I have visions of the crazy lady in the office!

Not evidenced, reported as an isolated incident. That won't stack up and change the directive (yet).

Your suspicions are not suspicions really - they are basically correct - it has been recommended clearly in what instance who should use a mask, and it is not for day to day use by everyone at this stage.
I wonder how long it will be before someone goes into a Woolies wearing something like 1583904091225.png

Glen20. That perfumed air?

I would suggest that unwanted spraying of someone with an unknown spray (unknown to them - Glen 20) constitutes an assault. :)

No, its been referred to as any mask used by the general population. Its also been repeated over and over that any masks period are ineffective for us in our everyday lives.

They clearly specify what scenarios when the correct mask, used correctly CAN be effective but for people wandering around day to day - NOPE.

I know you are trying to be helpful, but you are contradicting yourself. Your second quoted comment more-or-less agrees with what I said above - that a good mask, worn correctly would be effective (to some degree). P95 masks are (or were) readily available to the general population - I got mine from Bunnings. I don't need it to be useful for the whole population - I just need it to be useful for me.

I have not had the time to put together some definitive words about Masks and respirators…sorry… the following is all I have to say...

As a summary , I opine that a body of potential bug customers may benefit from wearing a respirator.
Folks over 50 , with immune compromising conditions who move in crowded areas , probably should wear a mask.. no matter what the pigeon settling info says

Flat surgical masks have little if any protective effect as they are not airtight and should not be used
P95 (US) / P2 (Europe) moulded respirator masks are a very good first defence if fitted and used sensibly (this is why health professionals use them).
The virus is usually transported on a carrier, typically aerosols (watermist) and these masks are very effective in this area.
Moulded paper masks should be restricted to one usage over a limited time frame due to internal moisture build up.
To paraphrase another contributor.. doffing and donning correctly is extremely important.
Once fitted the exterior of the mask should be considered contaminated, so if you grab the front of mask to speak or eat…the whole process is a failure unless you refit and wash your hands or fit a new mask.

P3 respirators are a higher level of protection and in practical terms offer 99% protection.

And make sure that the mask is a fit for the face of whoever is wearing it - if it doesn't seal against the face then inhaled air will take the path of least resistance and not be filtered.

People who have not received specific training and are competent in fitting these masks should use them.
There are little enough reserves for those who need them (HCW subject to aerosol precautions giving care to patients).
Nobody else should seek to obtain or use them.

Good luck with that!

Said who?

The government released 270,000 masks from the stockpile on Wednesday. But a health professional should be putting it like "Masks are not always plentifully available when health professionals need them so it would be appreciated if..." rather than a military order-like "Nobody else should seek to obtain or use them. ".

Fortunately while everyone else was fighting in the aisles over loo paper we did our research and got our masks.
