Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

There are only 2 active cases here now. Overseas arrivals start tomorrow though.

Two negative tests now for the German travellers so people have been released from quarantine and great news for Victoria.
Yep. Soon NSW will get to its rightful place as backmarker for covid cases.

SA should soon get to zero active local cases. NSW will be at least 1 for the next three weeks since they don’t check and report recoveries, just note any cases up to 28 days old as ‘active’

There is a date in March far far more important than Christmas I’m afraid. Wouldn’t get your hopes up at all... sorry to be blunt but they have not been acting logically or in a proportionate manner up until now - why would this change?
I’m not personally affected by it but I’d still like to see all the borders down this year. I’m surprised WA didn’t restart the clock for NSW so there is hope! :)

Yeah I can say I’m surprised by WA announcement today.

The next area of conflict might be next year if the Federal Government unilaterally let people return from certain countries quarantine free and a State or 2 disagree.

It’s hard to know where the vaccine/level of new cases intersecting approval line will be for international quarantine free arrivals.

Exactly my point, I suppose we will have to wait and see.

But the states could still mandate quarantine, couldn't they? Feds authority ends at the immigration exit door, as it does now. State could still decree quarantine after they exit.

But what if NSW agrees with the Feds for example and doesn't impose quarantine, but QLD or WA do not agree..... actually quite a likely scenario...

= Slam domestic borders shut time :( Again. I can already write you the press conference and sound bites WA and QLD would trot out...

That is honestly why I don't think the Feds will try it on, because QLD and WA have everyone over a barrel.

Australians won't accept the domestic borders being closed to keep a few international routes open. Just won't happen.

In preparation for positive overseas tests VIC has added a box to split them out from local cases.

First batch of arrivals into the new quarantine hotels came yesterday so cases will start appearing shortly in VIC from overseas returnees.
And SA just started this morning from Singapore. Seems a little bit too soon.

All QLD and WA would have to do is insist on a border pass for NSW arrivals and any that had come from OS in the last 14 days go into hotel quarantine. But of course that would require a bit of common sense which is a rare commodity in those states. So unfortunately their easy answer is to lock the border.

And there should be no problems with SA accepting OS arrivals now as I believe that the majority of contacts have completed their quarantine period so would be space available in the quarantine hotels.

To do that for road arrivals into QLD of overseas travellers who came in to NSW would mean putting up the barriers at the border again. Surely you are not advocating that?

The science says that if they arrived from a low risk country, which is what we are talking about here, then the borders would not have to be shut at all.But I realise that people in QLD and WA ,although most don't realise it ,have been taken in by a scare campaign.
Why would you want to close the border in QLD for travellers from a low risk country such as NZ or a Pacific Island?

Every state and terriory needs to pull their weight.

NSW took its 100,000th hotel quarantine person early last week, more than the rest of the country combined.
yeah, happy to start doing our bit again. Only 72 pax arrived this morning from SIN so let’s hope the new temporary set up does the job for now

Because the QLD / WA CHO said so thats why it would happen.

Oh agree with that. It’s just that the changes they stated they would be making haven’t been implemented yet.

I think you missed the point. And my last post seems to have not posted, so I'll repeat: I am not advocating closing the borders, it was your idea that a border pass at QLD border for travellers entering Australia via Sydney (and not quarantining there) would be all that was needed for QLD to pick that up and make them quarantine in QLD. I was pointing out that you may not have thought that through - ie If that traveller is coming by road, then who will they present the border pass to unless the border is blocked/manned? Anyway happy to move on.

Though you missed my point.I certainly don't advocate border closures but I don't trust the Premiers of QLD and WA.I was just suggesting they have easier ways to do things than lock the borders.
