Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Good interview happening right now with Professor Kelly on ABC

If worse comes to worse and SA puts restrictions on Sydney/NSW what happens to returned international travellers?
Only reason I’m asking is that we have a relative set to arrive in SYD in just over a week and they are worried about having to do 2 weeks quarantine in SYD and then another 2 weeks in ADL. I get the feeling if she has to do 4 weeks quarantine she will can the whole trip and just stay put

And now SA Cricket Association is in the hunt for North Shore people attending the cricket and attendees now have to wear masks when moving from their seat. I think Brett Lee has already returned to Sydney as a result but Ticketek have been called in to assist those who purchased seats.

Some new venues have been added to the list but overall the focal point seems to be the northern beaches. Hopefully a good sign.

I'm a resident of the northern beaches, Avalon Beach!
But also syd north shore,. ah!
But also bne and I flew up here on the 12th... so I get this sms...

QLD has declared Sydney Northern Beaches a COVID-19 hotspot. You recently arrived in QLD from a NSW flight. If you were in the Sydney Northern Beaches region on or since 11th December and are still in QLD you must immediately self-quarantine at your current place of residence for 14 days from the date you left Northern Beaches and present for a COVID-19 test as soon as possible. For information on where to get tested see Testing and fever clinics — coronavirus (COVID-19)

Was last in Avalon on the 9th so I'm permitted to RETURN to the syd hotspot but geez Big Brother following you, I thought it was all only hypothetical/Russian when I read it 40years ago.

Edit: oh and we'll have a lovely beach Christmas without the crowds! Happy to stay there for as long as.

Sounding like Victoria might be close to further restrictions with NSW

Confirmed case of COVID-19 on NSW Central Coast

The COVID-19 outbreak unfolding across Sydney has spread to the NSW central coast, with a resident testing positive following a trip to Palm Beach.

Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) confirmed on Friday night that a woman, who is currently in self-isolation, has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

In a statement, CCLHD said passengers who travelled on the 6.15pm ferry from Palm Beach to Wagstaffe on Wednesday, December 16 are “casual contacts”.

“The case has been linked to the cluster in the northern beaches,” a CCLHD spokeswoman said. “The ferry journey is the only location identified for casual contacts. There are no other exposure sites identified on the Central Coast.”

Health advice for casual contacts is to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms and get tested immediately if symptoms appear, however mild.

“One close contact has been identified, who resides in the same household,” the spokeswoman said. “This contact is also in home isolation and has been tested for COVID-19 as a precaution.”

This feels like it’s spun out of control a little now... I wonder why they are resisting making masks mandatory and doing a circuit breaker lockdown to catch up....?

Quite simply they feel they can get on top of it.

If you don’t recall, during Crossroad the reported whisper was NSW Cabinet/Government was thinking 250 cases (per day??) was what the NSW system could cope with.

If you add Avalon RSL and Avalon Bowlo (say about 25) that’s twice as big as Crossroads, which got to about 60 in the end.

Don’t forget Crossroads had poor contact tracing records, while it seems at least Avalon RSL has great records

I actually have every confidence in Kerry and the team. I’m quietly sh!tting myself as a frontline worker in NSW Health but I think given what they have managed before we will prevail here with widespread community engagement in contact tracing and voluntary COVID safe behavior modification.

I agree. While obviously some people have travelled outside of the general area, the current list suggests its largely contained to the northern beaches. I do suspect many more cases will be revealed in the morning but that most have already been in isolation for at least a day. This may be a good test of our National system. If the states can agree to call the northern beaches a “hot spot” and still manage to accept other travelers from Sydney, then maybe we’ve finally found a manageable model.

One hopes so.

But is still Sydney still as segmented as it used to be? When I moved to Sydney in the 1990s, for about 4-5 years, from Melbourne, it struck me how people stuck to there own areas - the regions were well delineated. The Inner West, East, Northern Beaches, West, Shire, Northshore etc . In Melbourne whilst there's an element of that it didn't seem anywhere as delineated and more contiguous. Maybe if it's still the case, that helps Sydney a lot in a pandemic.

You have a good point. Certainly, when I lived in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney for 20-plus years (until recently) there was seldom any need (or desire 🤣) to travel to any of those other regions.

For what it’s worth, I’m from the south side and, aside from a handful of visits to manly, haven’t visited the northern beaches

Similar here. I have lived in the lower north shore for 27 years and rarely go over the Spit Bridge into the Northern Beaches or travel west of the Gladesville Bridge.

Agreed. Whilst I have some issues with NSW Health (I also worked for them), they have done very well on contact tracing. So hopefully they will find all the people required to self isolate quickly.

The concern though is there there are still many venues that are poor in following covid safe procedures.

Honestly if you were going to pick a place for an outbreak in Sydney to manage it the best, Northern Beaches is perfect it’s still really isolated with very poor public transport and highly congested roads - all which mean getting in and getting out is a pain in the derrière. Which for this means it’s a lot of locals only still. With the exception of Manly of course at the southern end which has ferry access.

Overall yes because of Sydney’s (relatively) poor public transport and road systems, a lot to do with the physical geography of the city, it is still quite segregated - a positive for a virus that likes to travel!

Melbourne has a much better PT system and road network in comparison so people travel around a lot more.

Fingers crossed they can get it under control.

Totally agree it was so complacent at venues when I was there even last week. Many shops didn’t have sanitiser, many no check in code etc.

But on top of the venues being sloppy it was more the people I could not believe.... No social distancing whatsoever, very little hand hygiene and obviously no masks anywhere to be seen in shops etc. Did not chance trains but going past stations maybe 1 in 5 wearing a mask, tops.

We have friends on the northern beaches who are sensible people. But last few weeks even through social media photos it’s very clear there is not much social distancing going on despite people claiming they are being careful!

Not saying my hometown of Brisbane is any better by the way! I don’t think any city is probably doing it well outside of Melbourne of course after what they went through...

Even Melbourne is somewhat complacent now. I have been lucky to work all the way through without interruption and in the office almost every day except two weeks in November I had for my sanity. Lifts are still officially restricted to two people, but since the government allowed more people to return to working in the office, I see many more than that. People walk in to lifts with several people already in them, without caring. Many are not wearing face masks in the lift. Many on public transport are not wearing masks despite government directives to do so.

This morning, going for a coffee at 7/11 from the office, I walked past one of the strip clubs in the CBD emptying out. Two people confronted me shouting "hey you don't need to wear a cough*ing mask any more you cough*ing idiot"

So, in short, there are bad apples everywhere and frankly every city in this country is, to me, a ticking time bomb. Can the good fortune last a week longer so I and many others can see my family for Christmas? I hope so.

Totally - idiots exist everywhere :) , I was in Melbourne as well (we are all travelling again for work) and from where I visited there was much more distancing, checking in, could not MOVE without hitting a bottle of hand sanitiser anywhere in the shops. And everyone I saw in the city was wearing a mask in shops - but that’s the directive still I believe wheres back in Brisbane we never had that. I ironically felt a lot safer in Melbourne CBD than Brisbane CBD that’s for sure.
