Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Apologies if it's already been posted, but we now know where to avoid in NSW ;)

Been a few sites doing that for a while. personally I prefer this charting site.

Of note Bondi (2026) hasn't had a single case in 12 days, and only 8 cases in the last 4 weeks despite a lot of testing in the area (popup centre in the Bondi Beach carpark)

NSW cases same to be being driven by Newmarch House where people are still reporting positive despite a 2+ week lockdown. Albeit no new cases added to the 2747 postcode recently.

Rio Tinto starts rapid Covid testing at WA regional airports.

And a worry in Tasmania. One of yesterdays positives was a patient in the Mersey Hospital. Was a contact of a case at MWRH.Had been in isolation for a few days prior to admission.isolated for another 14 days in Hospital.3-4 days later developed symptoms and tested positive.moved to Covid ward.

And another worry:

A number of passengers who were on a domestic Qantas flight are being told to contact Queensland Health after one person on the plane tested positive to the virus.
The flight in question is QF614, which flew from Melbourne to Brisbane on April 22.
The passenger who tested positive had recently returned from overseas and is linked to a cruise ship carrying passengers who were later tested for the virus, Health Minister Steven Miles said yesterday.

Being reported as Meadow Glen primary school in Epping.
Yes and only 1 teacher has tested positive. School to be closed for 3 days for thorough cleaning. Hopefully it hasn’t been transmitted to others at the school.
That meat processing plant has turned into quite a nasty outbreak though

13 new cases reported in Vctoria today.

Six are from an outbreak in a meat processing factory, four were from recently returned overseas travellers and three were discovered Victoria’s “testing blitz”.

This brings the state total to 1,384 cases.

There were no new deaths overnight.

The significant part there is the three were discovered Victoria’s “testing blitz”.

The blitz which has only just been commenced for those that are unaware is the goal to do 100,000 tests in 14 days (this is a major ramping up o the previous rate)and where anyone with even only the most minor symptom can get tested. A key reason for the blitz was to try and root out any cases that may have been circulating, before any widespread opening up of Victoria post 11 May.

Note that 100K of tests in a fortnight is a major expansion as up till then there had been about 110/120K of tests done in Vic prior to the blitz starting.

In addition:

The widespread testing of individuals will be used alongside wastewater testing, where the levels of coronavirus in sewage will be tracked to help anticipate or rapidly respond to local outbreaks.

Yes though at least the plant is a known cluster with everyone having been tested and contact traced.

The teacher will instigate a fresh batch of testing being down, and so I guess we will soon know at how good they were at social distancing practices while at work.

Question for medicos - maybe @drron might help. Most if not all the 13 deaths in Tasmania have been +70 or 80, I think, and many already in hospital for one reason or another. Therefore in the 'most vulnerable' category and little doubt would be 'in trouble' when they were diagnosed with the virus.

Yet I think only one case total was/has been in ICU: Coronavirus Australia 221 cases | COVID-19 Live .

Question is: why wouldn't more of these cases have been in ICU? Surely they are exactly the group that we have established extra ICU capacity for?

I am not a medico, but many people in aged care also have instructions in place (done on entry) on what can be done to them in case of severe medical emergencies. Do not resuscitate being only one such instruction that may be have been made.

When my mother went into an aged care residential facility they are counselled as to whether that person wants a DNR in place so that staff immediately know what to do in the event of heart attack, stroke, or in this case, Covid. If they want a DNr the paperwork is lodged with their records. My mum had a DNR and that was invoked when she had a stroke and which took any decisions away from us.

Were the overseas travellers in isolation?

Self-isolation has not been an option for international arrivals for some time in Australia. Compulsory quarantine has been in place for some time for all travellers re-entering Australia, so the answer would presumably be that they will have all been in quarantine.

So personally they are case numbers that I ignore.

There are still regular flights of Australians coming back from overseas. Some are on special repatriation charters, and some are on the scheduled international flights that some airlines are still operating.

I'm surprised they were counted in the numbers without specifying.

It has always been so, which is why I always look at the daily verbal report for each state/ territory if you want to know what is truly going on.

ie The 2 ADF positives in the NT yesterday who had returned from the middle east, and who are thought to have been infected by a defense contractor over there.
