Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Police in Western Australia have charged two people with breaching quarantine requirements.

A 42-year-old Russian man who arrived in Perth from Russia on Friday was arrested and refused bail for allegedly leaving his room in a quarantine hotel twice on Saturday. The man had been granted an exemption to travel to WA as a maritime worker.

A 20-year-old man from Victoria who arrived from South Australia was also arrested and refused bail after he was found in Northbridge at 1.10am on Saturday.

The man had arrived after getting an exemption on compassionate grounds to travel from South Australia. He arrived on 10 December and was ordered to self-quarantine at a house in Northam. Police alleged that he was not staying at that address and had breached quarantine.

Both men have been charged with failing to comply with a direction and appeared before Perth magistrates court today.

How ironic that the Victorian Premier is preaching to NSW when their Government oversaw hundreds of deaths in Victoria due to inadequate hotel quarantine - refused to have Defence Force members monitoring/supervising - and also the poor 'tracing' in Victoria that was way behind every other state.

He's the last one who ought lecture the NSW Premier.

It's terrible to see these State Premiers acting like little children and shutting borders then opening then shutting.

How can the airlines and others providing transport run their operations with this sort of attitude from so-called 'leaders'?

The 20 year old is reported as being AFL footballer Sydney Stack who previously got in a spot of bother at the AFL bubble in QLD.

Borders will no longer to closed they said.....................................................

If this is how we react, how will borders ever open up to international? Vaccine won't reduce COVID worldwide for a few years at least.

QLD premier saying people from Greater Sydney should not travel to Queensland after 1am and Queenslanders in Sydney should return home quickly or face having to spend 14 days in hotel quarantine.

"If you are from Greater Sydney, now is not the time to travel to Queensland. We love you, we want you to have a peaceful Christmas at home."

She said pubs and clubs in the state had 72 hours to improve their processes, citing reports of illegible hand writing in check-in registers.

Well the (Acting??) Federal CHO still thought at that time that 30 over 3 days was a hotspot......NSW Premier yesterday said some sort of border restriction with Avalon hotspot was probably warranted/proportionate.

While true, Crossroads took effectively around 5 months to resolve from the perspective of re-opening borders to travellers from NSW again. Yes formally Crossroads got to about 60, but then the other subsequent/later outbreaks - Thai Rock, funerals, hospital, etc.

We don’t have 5 months of Jobkeeper this time...

QLD CHO Dr Young said as of 1am tomorrow Greater Sydney will be declared a hot spot and only those with an exemption will be allowed in.
Greater Sydney includes all of Sydney, and it goes south, down to Wollongong, Wollondilly, the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, and the Central Coast," Dr Young said.
QLD residents have been given 72hrs to return home or face 14 days hotel quarantine

It’s now very obvious that Australia has the goal of “eliminating” this virus and becoming a hermit nation for probably half a decade. It’s really time that the federal government stood up and acknowledged this. The current method of using NSW as the punching bag that does all the hard work (managing intl arrivals and receiving freight) and has to suffer the consequences of the inevitable “breaches” (regardless of how well they’re handled) is simply not sustainable long term.

It’s time for the Federal Government to standup and provide us with a detailed outline of the state of play moving forward.

I also think I’d like Sydney Airport closed to international arrivals today. Unilaterally. NSW has proven that we can’t manage it. The airline crew won’t agree to our terms so we need to close it and divert all arrivals to every other state capital.

I’ve had enough.

Problem is, as brought up earlier, several of the states won't go for anything that puts more responsibility on to them and we end up in an even worse position. The system of federalism itself is broken here because the constitution no longer accurately reflects the funding and responsibilities of the levels of government to which it applies.

PM‘s statement

Good the see his consistent support just as he did for Victoria, Qld and SA.

Not sure where to put this info tip but has been annoying us that one has to fill out all the details after scanning a QR Code every time. But there’s a way to auto fill!

The interesting thing is that W.A has required airline crew to only stay in certain nominated hotels since August. So while they might not like it they have accepted it here for the last nearly 5 months.

It only took 5 months because of the way that NSW chose to manage it, not a criticism just a factual statement. The wanted to keep their economy moving and thus chose a different path to Adelaide and Melbourne.

True.

My point was also that Crossroads started with 1 case crossing the border. I think it’s pretty unlikely Melbourne / Victoria could do another lockdown and would be forced to do what NSW did, which in turn means being locked out of other States for another 5 months potentially.......maybe Victoria might take more risks the New Year. Who knows?

Mobility in Melbourne is much more fluid than in Sydney. The harbours and bays make it difficult to move about which is why a lockdown of the Northern Beaches has some hope of success when the Victorian ones didn’t with hundreds of side roads in and out of the affected suburbs.

The overarching aspect of all of this is that Jobkeeper drops to $1000 on 1 Jan before phasing out in March. Queensland can’t afford to not have tourists which is why they were one of the backmarkers in closing the borders compared to back in August.

Victoria has gone through hell so I suspect they want to stay closed at this point. If NSW can stamp it out they’ll open up.
