Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Does anyone want to guess how many jobs and businesses will finally hear the death knell as their peak trading period is destroyed along with any opportunity at salvaging business?

It's irrelevant to politicians of course. But to the rest of us humans, it's extremely sad.

Ok more on the Bega 2.

This article was updated one hour ago.
  • Again the story is different.
  • They are now confirmed to Lakes Entrance on Dec 28/29 as speculated by myself earlier.
  • This version goes with being notified on Dec 31 as they were queuing at a NSW testing site. (Today there have been different reports on the timeline of the notification).

Two of the latest positive cases are in people who were also at the Black Rock restaurant on December 21, before they travelled into Gippsland, a government spokesperson told the ABC.

They stopped in Lakes Entrance on December 28 and 29 — the latter being the same date coronavirus fragments were detected in Lakes Entrance wastewater.

They then headed to New South Wales, where they attended two hospitality venues in Eden and Bermagui on December 30 and the morning of December 31.

By the time Victorian health authorities contacted them on December 31 to inform them they were close contacts, they were already queuing to be tested at a NSW site.

They are now back in Victoria being supported to isolate.

And also:

So the first case is detected in Vic, on Wednesday. 2 people from the Black Rock travelled across Vic and into NSW then finally get notified on Thursday but still travel back to Vic. Would they not have been notified sometime Wednesday not find out from the news the following day.

Good question for some states, but note NSW is not in a State of Emmergency, our governent has been able to place restrictions without declaring one. The last SOE we had was for the bushfires before Covid became a thing.
Fair comment and highlights why other States should be providing justification for the on-going dictatorial powers. It's a health crisis and yes, it was a surprise, but that was a while ago....

I think it will take 6 months plus before businesses impacted by Covid will see any change and that assumes the vaccinations roll out well. Many won’t last that distance. With states closing borders at a sniff of an issue we have no chance.

Sometime Weds would be difficult as the 3 initial cases were not known till Weds afternoon/early evening.

When they were advised is the matter that has been the question all day ever since the NSW presser this morning.
But latest info is:

By the time Victorian health authorities contacted them on December 31 to inform them they were close contacts, they were already queuing to be tested at a NSW site.

And yes first case late Weds afternoon in terms of positive test result.

The cases were announced in the evening.

Contact tracing begun after that. When precisely......who knows. Probably quickly. But did all 3 answer the phone quickly?

You would need time to interview. And time to analyse and find links.

Then to hunt down restaurant records. Were they accurate as some people are not truthful?

Now early this week I got my negative test back same day...and mine was not taken till mid morning. They may have gone in first thinghave gone in later., or they may .

So positive result obtained late Weds. The Bega2 are dining in Bega at 5pm. Breakfast the next morning.

Now Smile Buffalo link made sometime before 9.15am on Dec 31.

How much earlier is unknown. But was not announced earlier. May have been earlier morning or late the night before.

Once the contact tracers knew there was a link amongst the 3 initial cases they would have to get access to the Restaurants records. How quick could this be done? Especially as it is not known exactly when the link was made.

So after that early on the 31st the Bega 2 are called, and as it turned out they were in a testing queue in NSW (based on the last article). Also Dr Chant said they had done everything they should have.

Now note that two media (one possibly rehashing the other) initially reported that they were contacted on 30 Dec. But the ABC has now changed that to

The government spokesperson said state health authorities contacted the pair on December 31 to inform them they were close contacts. And TV media have also now gone with his timeline.

Given that the 3 cases were not known till late on the 30th contacting the Bega 2 mid morning on the 31st would seem to actually be a pretty quick result.

It will be longer than that, Vaccinations dont start here until late March (assuming Oxford one) and the priority is for health workers, those with compromised immune systems and the very elderly. Majority of the population wont have the opportunity to get their shot until last quarter (Oct -Dec),

I dont think you can reliably plan to book anything that is not fully refundable domestically before next Xmas (Dec 21) or another 6 months beyond that internationally, its depressing.

Interesting the Victorian posters on this thread keep referencing Bega, but the NSW presser and all news reports up here in NSW (including the venue listings on NSW Health) only mention Eden and Bermagui.

Eden and Bermagui are both located in Bega Valley Shire

Yes, more and more businesses are going under. Some people do not realise as it is very sector related, or draw regular paychecks and are are just oblivious as to how grim it is for some. Some businesses have had best ever years, some neutral and some poor to dismal. Of my mates, neighbours, family and work contacts I know of all three businesses/job scenarios. Amongst the most badly affected are those with high overheads and no or little income. Many people have just had to walk away.

The pandemic has been a mixed bag for everyone. Some have lost their life or health. Some their job, some their business, and others are still struggling on. Others have only lost holidays or experiences or have had wedding plans delayed or disrupted which will still a loss is probably not at level of stress and devastation that many have had to deal with. How distressing the pandemic has been for each person has been wildly different.

From a personal business perspective I certainly would want cases in the current outbreak/s to be well under control by when many people resume work on 11th Jan as that will shape their thinking in the near term. Hopefully that will happen. Grim it will be for me if running rampant still. Clock is ticking.

The insolvency protections have ceased, most landlord rent deferrals are winding down, and Jobkeeper is in its last block.

It will be interesting to see if the Federal Government stares down the states as the inevitable calls for all of the above to be extended have already started.

Thanks that makes sense with the timeline.

Sounds like Vics are turning out in droves

One parents comment

“9am and have been to 3 different testing locations all of which are already closed due to hitting capacity. Is there a penalty for not getting tested within 24hrs? With 2 children under 3 who have already spent the last 2 days in the car to cross the border it is looking highly unlikely that we will be able to get tested today!”

I'm hoping for faster roll out. Hunt seems to think everyone will have their vaccinations by October. I know that Health emails have been sent to medical people seeking those who aren't qualified to give injections outside their workplace to now nominate to undertake training in the Covid vaccination. SIL and likely future Niece have both received an email. As they are pre qualified to give vaccinations in their respective workplaces (hospitals) I'm wondering if this means that vaccinations will be given in a variety of additional places, eg schools and public meeting halls. Of course this assumes the Oxford one.

Likely most of our family members will receive one in the early states due to occupation (medical), age, and compromised immune conditions (Lupus) leaving just the children.
