What a surprise...

——-

Brisbane Airport was packed with hundreds of desperate passengers tonight as residents fled interstate just as the city enters a "significant" three-day lockdown.

I always wonder how ppl can just leave? Even with Melbourne's lockdowns of more than 3 days, I never seriously contemplated leaving town. Who's going to look after the house? What about work? Even with remote working, I still prefer my home study.

Absolute sh**show. Nowhere else but Australia would be in this level of panic a year into this pandemic over a single case. I guess we’re lucky we can afford to be this way... well except for those who can’t. We can’t all be “booming” unfortunately

But pretty much every other state is applying the same restrictions (or worse) on them to try to prevent this (as should have Qld done for areas outside the zone)..

Personally don't see this being as a result of the UK strain (it's only marginally 50-70% more infective, it's not 5+ X (500%)). Maybe the high number of contacts identified (70+)
But more it's a continuation of the ultra-conservative approach that's been pushed by Qld CHO/AP and it won AP an election so it shouldn't be a surprise.

Nothing wrong with it, and no-one can blame Qld for at least not being consistent (well other than for the AFL and a few others)

Its 3 days. Thats a long weekend.

Victoria has shut the border to anyone who is in, has been or traveled through (!) greater Brisbane since January 2. After telling it's residents to stay put in Brisbane until Monday and wait for further advice.

To me, this is one of the major problems. The Victorian government now has thousands of residents in the area that have been told: you are stuck. I'm sure given the time of year that most are families who were on holiday. How on earth are these people going to afford to stay on in Brisbane until... Who knows when?

Presumably the same application exemption system to come in to Victoria via hotel quarantine used for those in NSW will be used for greater Brisbane - so they unfortunately need to plan for the long haul in Queensland.

Despite all the significant impacts imposed upon those effected, the government was unable to have anyone advise those returning to Victoria by air of their responsibilities after stepping off the aircraft. Sorry but this is another very sad example of state government being unprepared while expecting those stuck in Brisbane to just deal with it?

Perhaps I am being unreasonable, but if you're going to choke travel and cause major hardship at the drop of a hat then the least you could do is ensure those who are coming are properly informed, at least out of courtesy to those now stuck...

It’s clear that’s one of the reasons Brisbane is in lockdown is that QLD Health know there are going to be gaping holes in most the places the 70 contacts have been....

So far there is only a very short list of exposure sites. It would be good if it was accurate.

Are there sites missing? Note that sites are only normally listed if all contacts are not known. So for example home and workplace (well for cases where random people cannot go at their workplace) do not appear.

Their time out is also quite brief which is good.

however if there are 70 close contacts the exposure site list does seem to be a lot less than one might anticipate.

Speaking of exposure sites: No further updates added in Vic today after 08/01/21 7:16am

So I will take that as a good sign meaning no new positive cases to identity more sites. Though bad news as it also means the index cases remain unknown.

Case alerts – public exposure sites

The locations on this list are not a current risk to the public and you can visit them in line with current restrictions. DHHS make every effort to contact businesses prior to updating the exposure sites and appreciates the ongoing assistance of Victorian businesses in managing exposures to coronavirus (COVID 19).

SA Health is doing its best to confuse everyone too. Last night at dinner time I read the SA Health media release that people who arrived back in SA from BNE before today needed to get tested but needn't isolate while awaiting results. Now less than 12 hours later they have changed that media release (without any overt acknowledgment or warning on the website that it has been changed) and isolation is now required until a negative result is received. SA Health will only have themselves to blame if people can't keep up with the advice that chops and changes like that.

Yesterday the Bruce Highway cameras showed the Bruce Highway north to the Sunshine Coast as a parking lot.reports say of over 40Km.

And the dynamic duo think that all these people who didn't take up their suggestion of not going to go away for the weekend are going to obey the direction to stay in their accommodation until at least 6pm on Monday.Tell em they are dreaming.

Someone with enough money is going to sue the Vic Gov and will most likely win... The couple held prisoner at a Melbourne Airport hotel are going to sue them and I expect some more people will try .

The DHHS are incompetent beyond belief.

Another huge testing day for VIC as they go after the MCG and Chadstone sites with the rapid response units.

Good news so far.

Great news sites are limited hopefully no one is lying...

My concern was if there were close contact sites that the contact tracing records would be woeful based on my experiences in Brissy.

I actually suspect we are going to be ok, but this scene plus the airport jammed with people ‘escaping’ clearly shows if there was a big outbreak it has now successfully spread to the Gold/Sunshine Coasts, probably other intrastate locations and interstate as well.

We actually fear the state governments more than the virus these days...

I know the Berala cluster is not the UK strain, but the Berala cluster reportedly only required brief contact to transmit.

As the UK strain is more transmissible, you would hope Qld goes further than the 15 minute standard in working out all indoor/enclosed exposure site. It may not be lying, it may sometimes be other factors (memory, phrasing of question).

Also wasn’t the rumour that a household contact is positive? Then it’s at least 2 people unfortunately.

The Christmas shutdown period for most corporates in NSW and Vic ended on Friday, with most people returning to work (either in person or remotely) from Monday, this weekend was always going to be a busy one for travel as people head home. If people didnt bring their work devices with them on vacation, the panic may be worse. I understand why many out of state visitors would want to iso at home where they can work than pay crazy mark-up to remain in a hotel for what may end up beinga lot longer than 3 days.

Very glad i chose to holiday in my own state, so cant be locked out from my home.
