Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Some bizarre assumption that wanting borders open with daily case loads that resemble binary computing language is also unhelpful, I believe.

How so? I'd say we are doing plenty plenty more than the UK and we are starting from a much better base, too.
I just meant in terms of restrictions of movements across the nation and household limitations of visitors.

You are quoting my post, and linking it to the closed border issue? My comment was about your posting language.

Difference is pretty big though, in that the UK has no managed hotel quarantine system and a long list of countries exempt from the self-isolation requirement.

I'm just trying to make it clear that I prefer free movement within my own country with such low case numbers for economic and mental health reasons. It's nothing to do with being needy (to use your words)

Yes, but those free-movement ideals are not going to happen at this stage. We all want to see the borders open, and to stay open.

Until the vax effectiveness is proven, the borders will most likely be banging open and shut like the proverbial dunny door.

In case you haven't noticed, this issue has been ongoing for quite some time and no one is any closer to being able to question our various state governments on what their goals actually are, how reasonable they are to achieve in the medium to long term or how they intend to get us out of this mess.

"The vaccine" is not an acceptable answer, because said vaccine won't remove COVID-19 from the world.

I think at some point those of us posting on a forum like AFF need to make an assessment of the situation and work things out for ourselves.

It should be reasonably obvious by now what the goals and objectives of the state and federal governments are. It should be reasonably obvious what the legal position is (states can close borders in response to a medical threat). It should be reasonably obvious what the risks of interstate travel are. Likewise, not hard to foresee that travelling to see family or loved ones is going to be difficult.

The way out is also, at this stage, reasonably clear: the vaccine is not necessarily intended to remove covid. Analysis so far suggests it will greatly reduce the severity.

Given the Cth and states are aiming for 'zero' because we can't treat severe cases of covid among the vulnerable, once that risk is removed, we should be able to look towards 'normal'.

I know it sounds picky, and please don't take it personally, but donuts is as far from a scientific expression as we are likely to get. What happened to zero?

Triple 'like' score. :)

'Donuts' (referring to zero), 'Karen', 'ScoMo' - all symptoms of a cretinous and lazy approach to language, especially in the media, trying to be cool to the 'younger audience' who struggle above monosyllables. I'm also dislike 'jab' (why not 'injection' ?), 'Gladys', 'Dan' and the like as well, when referring to state Premiers.

Hmmmph. Then there are the dictionaries who breathlessly announce their 'word of the year' lists, inevitably comprised of phrases, not words.

You used an emoji That too is probably frowned upon. Though oddly it seems allowed by some as a way of shortcutting communication. Evidently that is not a lazy way to communicate, but shortening or using alternative words is.

And do remember to push buttons on your mobile as dialing with it is impossible unless you use the modern adaption of the word dial. If your language evolves then please feel free to dial numbers on your mobile. Oh sorry, I should have said mobile telephone.

While I had hoped the courts may have put some sort of constraint on state behaviour (for example, I have problems with the way they backdate isolation requirements), it seems the courts have pretty much decided to support the states.

The problem I have is the exit strategy of some of the states. Will they allow things to open up after a vaccine, or will they be still in absolute fear of a case getting in. It remains to be seen.

I would like to hear from the various states what their exit strategy is. Borders are slammed shut at warp speed but open at snails pace.
I’m not putting too much faith in much of what our state leaders have to say about anything that’s COVID-related. I’ve given up on following the status of restrictions in every state other than my own. Just keeps changing too often. It will do your head in.

As for overall strategy .......?

Punctuation is important, but my rant was about the lexicon, not punctuation. For my published writing, I use an editor for good reason!

In places like social media and emails, I also like the use of emojis, as it can provide some context and meaning that might be lost in the short communication and result in conflict. But I don’t confuse emojis with lexicon.

🙄 😉 🍩

although tall those words, other than ‘jab’ and ‘dan’ are multi syllables!

@ oz_mark... why would states be ‘in fear’ once we have a vaccine? The only reason for zero is to protect the vulnerable. I suppose if the vaccine doesn’t offer protection in severity, some sort of restrictions may continue. But the UK and US seem to be banking on the reduction in severity as well.

Awww. I love donuts. Sometimes you've just gotta have fun.

Problem is that they have either explicitly or implicitly argued for elimination. The vaccine won't necessarily help that, so I suspect they are going to have a bit of a problem walking back on much of the fear mongering they have done.

Yes, and when I say 'struggle above mono-syllables', it doesn't preclude some others - with a struggle ;) Anyway, apologies for the distraction (attempted levity against a gloomy subject) and back to the virus ...

I hope no one mentioned that Green, Lyon and coughmins all scored ducks yesterday as evidently that is only for those who want to be young and cool. That duck eggs and donuts both look like zero's is evidently irrelevant.

And on this forum no one uses terms like mattress runs, status runs and the like do they? I mean we all know what people mean, but that is evidently irrelevant or are they actually talking about a mattress running?

Pax. Cannot use that either.

This forum clearly needs a complete edit.

Though I am still puzzled why the use of emjoi's is acceptable though. I was going to write OK, but luckily realised that would not be acceptable either.

While NSW may have its borders open, it's not like we can actually go anywhere, nor would anyone really want to visit given the restrictions on return.
