Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Curious that they consider this as community transfer when the second person has not yet served out their own full quarantine period. The fact he is a contact of someone else who is positive seems irrelevant. 🤷‍♀️

Note that the "official" report not yet issued and so that covidlive status may change.

So that's 3-days in a row of 0 for NSW (first time since mid-Dec)...

Looking good. :)

I think there was a SA case in quarantine (3 months ago perhaps) that was classified as local transmission because they likely acquired the virus in hotel quarantine. The two recent Brisbane ones on level 7 Brisbane quarantine were classified as overseas even though one family might have got it from the other family (eg possibly through air conditioning) while in quarantine - apparently same strain, apparently came from different flights.

Was good to see ABC news reporter finally call Vic out on the inconsistencies with its "Red"zones, highlighting as I did taht NB had mystery cases and exposure sites in last 14 days yet was now Orange (there are others too like Woollarha) so more risky than some of the Red zone LGAs with fewer cases and no mystery cases. Need the rest of the media to pick up on this and force some consistency in categorisation.

I'll rant off topic for a moment - these days the media can't do much more than regurgitate a media release in the verbatim. They're barely reporters, let alone journalists.

Its because there has been controversy as to why military and diplomatic arrivals have been quaratining in Darwin Hotels and not Howard Springs away form the community. Many locals dont want hotels used when Howard Springs would keep them away from community.
OK but that controversy doesnt make it a community spread but simply someone still in Quarantine from overseas travel.

Yes I remember that in SA and was surprised by that one as well.

If they believe the person caught it in HQ as opposed to overseas, it is classed as local. Genomic testing may show they have same strain as another quarantinee, which is from a part fo the world the person did not travel to/from.

The 2 people who got covid in hotel i Brisbane are consodered local, as they appear to have caught it (airborne) from UK traveller on the same floor. Local is different from community.

ABC stream all the press conferences live - are you talking about linear TV??

ABC News TV channel - its digital not sure what you mean by linnear. They usually cut live to Sydney for the NSW presser at a11am, today they were playing some pre-recorded rant by Albo.

At 11am when presser stated the ABC news website was missing the link, but as usual it was on the ABC Sydney facebook page. A few minutes in (just checked at 11:07am) they finally put the link on the ABC news website, but didnt try to show on TV until it was over.

Yes, agree the Queensland leak was local. But sometimes it seems like they make it up as they go to suit the narrative. Even having the same strain proves little, but if someone wants to try to create the story that it is "spreading in Australia" even if confined, then it seems a good conclusion to support that case.

3 new AO cases in HQ reported in Vic . So 10 in total now.

Two reported to be players by the Health Minister.

Unless I'm mistaken or there was a later reclassification, Qld have classified them as overseas.

Unfortunately no update for NSW on border restrictions easing from the QLD presser today, completely deflected the question.

Watching the NSW presser live via internet worked fine for me today.

With lower cases the pressers from many states are often not live on TV (or can be at the same time!) and so if one wants to watch them actually live you need to do so via the internet.

The TV version often delayed is also often abridged.

All states do it. I recall one instance where NSW started saying x days since a recent local new case or something to that effect. They were trying to discount a mystery case, which they believed was an old infection. Back in the good old days when Qld had their 28 days of no community/mystery cases reviewed once a month border clock.

An interesting note is I hope the cases infected while in quarantine get a full/renewed 14 day period (cost free of course) under the new isolation rules.

So no criteria still??? 28 days was a crazy idea???

Qld wouldn't be so petty as to only open borders when they get for support (National Cabinet + money) for the remote quarantine idea. Its a good way to get a state of the art hospital in a remote location! Some countries can build a hospital in weeks it seems.

It might be a good sign that QLD are ignoring NSW because it might mean they may ignore the standard 28 day rule...?? (trying to be positive?). If they were planning on enforcing the 28 days they'd be repeating that every 3 seconds like they did last time....

VIC certainly are not planning on applying the 28 day rule, keep saying 'any day now' to the remainder of the hot spots.

SA are talking about a 14 day rule.

TAS have gone before 28 days before.

WA can't count that high so best to ignore ;)

I wish they got that 'right'! yesterday's reporting of CHO Kelly's comments were bordering on downright misleading. He said a vaccine wouldn't have immediate results on freedoms, but we'd see a gradual opening up through the year. All the media reported was 'borders will be the last thing to open'. peddling doom and gloom.

Qld announced on Monday they will next rule on NSW Border on 28th Jan, so i dont think anyone was expecting an announcement today.

Anna is free to move Queensland HQ to remote mining camps, but it will be wrong of her to try and force rest of the states to do liklewise or use this as a border requirment. Unlike WA and Qld the other states dont generally have disused mining sites with facilities that can be easily converted. NSW also takes signifiantly more arrivals than Qld so would have to find 4 times the number of sites.

As NSW have proved one of the biggest risks to virus escaping quarantine is during transport to HQ. Replacing a 20 min drive to CBD HQ (or 5 mins to aiport Hotel for flight crew) with a serveral hour drive (or a bus + domestic flight + bus) increased that transport transmission risk.

Apart from the govt sponosred repatriation flights, the commercial flights need to fly to Capital cities because they are mostly carrying freight - the freight is what makes it affordbale for them to keep flying here.

Im all for dedciated Quarantine venues, but think these should be purpose built (with a suitable airstrip and hopsital onsite), not moving the risk to regional NSW which does not have ICU hospital facilities.

They could easily shove a village of demountables right next door to Wellcamp airport (can handle large jets) and fly people directly in there to avoid the high risk internal transport....

But then the plane still needs to be flown onto to SYD to offload the freight and load new freight. Unless you are also proposng to move all freight hubs to rural area as well, and then add a delay for delivery while the freight is driven back to city where it is needed.

Im not familiar with Wellcamp, Can it park/refuel the number of international flights coming in and out of SYD everyday? For every passenger plane there are just as many freight only (DHL/FedEx etc).

Anytime someone gets seriously ill with covid woudl need to be medivaced back into a city with proper facilities. Rural hopsitals dont have ICU nor respitory specialists.

BNE handles a lot less freight and a lot less overseas arribals than SYD and Queensland govt has an incentove tp create jobs in ex mining towns that arent mining anymore.

Like I said Anna can do what she likes, but she doesnt get to dictate what NSW does.

I support purpose built Federally funded quarantine facilities, not a slap dash bunch of demountables in the middle of nowhere, adding other transport risks. Wherever those facilities are built needs to also have a fully resourced hospital with ICU beds onsite (or within 10km commute).

China built a 3,000 bed hospital in 5 days, surely we could have one built in 10?
