Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Just heard on news Federal government has accused QLD CHO + QLD government of hoarding vaccines and not administering them all.... which could have helped prevent the spread if they'd bothered to vaccinate their front line workers.

This is going to be fun to watch.

States ordered to stop hoarding COVID-19 vaccine doses

Federal health authorities have told states to stop hoarding COVID-19 vaccine doses after two separate clusters were linked back to unvaccinated healthcare workers from a Brisbane hospital.

Health authorities have linked 18 cases to the outbreaks, which were unknowingly spread by a nurse and doctor from the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

From Wednesday, Queensland health workers must have received at least one vaccine dose before treating COVID-positive patients after the latest outbreaks, which triggered Brisbane’s three-day lockdown.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said inoculation of staff in COVID-19 wards was not mandatory from the beginning of the rollout because she through there was not enough vaccine doses available.

I watched both press conferences today. Queensland Health minister said they had to hoard one Pfizer vax for every one administered as they need to guarantee supply for the second dose. CHO said that is a federal responsibility and they are already doing that.

Interesting. I believe I recall our Premier stating he was holding back Pfizer for second doses. So, it gets back to the issue of enough supply but not enough will.

Is anyone else just so totally over this whole thing or is it just me? I just feel like pulling the doona over my head. The general level of incompetence, ignorance, non-compliance, unwillingness to take sensible steps etc in the general community and on the part of governments of all stripes just astonishes me. We just can't keep doing this, and yet, we do. Feeling really despondent. If we can't even sort ourselves out domestically, I will never get to see my son overseas. Over. It.
Which is why I am of the view we all need to be vaccinated and soon. Not always a fan of the WHO but hard to disagree with the theory its not over till its over.

ABC reports "Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital has been put into lockdown due to the developing COVID situation connected to the facility."

No details yet on what that means.

Brisbane was going to run out of luck eventually. Oh well, at least the weather will be nice and we are allowed to exercise so it is now a question of how long for the lockdown.

Yup luck plus a completely bungled contact tracing effort plus now some serious QLD health management issues/decisions that led to a too slow inoculation of COVID facing frontline health staff...

Messsssy.....

Another BNE hospital is impacted, too:

Mater Mothers’ Hospital has sent staff home after a recent visitor tested positive to the virus.

It is understood the person visited the private maternity section as well as a nearby coffee shop that staff frequented.

The staff sent home included midwives and doctors.

Hopefully this is evidence of contact tracing and testing working well, and not of a far more widespread outbreak that they are just now getting a handle on.

What I have not understood at all throughout the pandemic but more so lately, is that masks often are not required of visitors in hospitals, yet they are now federally mandated on planes and in airports.

IMO the "We kept you safe" mantra is to blame. A border can't keep you safe - this has led to widespread complacency. Notice the mantra from AP & Young is now "We're not safe until the vaccinations are complete".

I think NSW spending all of 2020 expecting a new outbreak at any moment has set us up for success. In particular, the universal mandatory QR code system (service NSW) is excellent and should be adopted nationally. I actually find it frustrating travelling to QLD and every place has their own system.

Yes I have been impressed with the service NSW app.Easy to use.But so was the Tasmanian Government QR app.The problem was hardly anyone used it and had their own QR codes. It is now to become mandatory.
QLD though is hopeless. Many restaurants don;t even have a QR code showing and those that do hardly ever insist on it being used.

Our experience differs, eating out we have found universal screening for a completed QR code, friendly but firm.

Spent some time recently in Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne & still now after 28+ covid free stretch they still enforce name etc details, temp check, number of questions on entry along with new mask to use requirement they give you. Number of security guards to make sure of this & lift access restricted to track path of visitors.

Melbourne is really on top of many aspects, maybe excluding HQ!

Positive case visited an event in the GC

FYI - I followed the conversation fine, your assertion is that the name of a band which played a concert open is private information is what is flawed. The information was already in the public domain.
Not that I said that, but lets explore your logic.

How was the band member having Covid 19 in the public domain?

The band playing at the venue could be found, but not that the band member was positive until there was a privacy breach.

Band lists of who is playing where don't advertise band members having Covid 19. So your assertion is flawed.

There was a privacy breach by public officials. Test results are meant to be private for very good reasons.

Only after that privacy breach did the public know that a band member was involved.

Without the breach all you would know is that a band was at the venue and no one would have given a damn.

But public officials named the band and stated the drummer was positive. Then the cough hit the fan.

The band members were harrased and they quite rightly were angry about it.

That was wrong, very wrong.

Sigh - just pulled the plug on my friend staying with me this weekend. Feel terrible but Dr FM feels it’s too risky until we know for sure it’s contained to Queensland. Back in the bunker.
It is what we have to do. Sad times.
