Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Yes parents are meant to be in Brisbane with me this weekend looking at my new house. They have appointments next week in Adelaide that have been planned for ages so can't quarantine for 14 days. Hoping all is resolved in time for the AFF Adelaide dinner
School Holidays start in SA next Friday. Transition meeting Tuesday. Nicola (CHO) likely shaking her head; Grant (Commissioner Police) saying Open, Marshall Premier - like a deer in headlights.

Very harsh. Marshall wants the state open and has been pushing for less restrictions. Unfortunately he doesn’t hold the reigns

Well, he is the Premier so...

And an emergency transition meeting this morning and Qld’ers allowed in effectively immediately. Regarded as a U turn in media. Too late now for the Easter break.

Commissioner Stevens holds the reigns and has the power over Marshall under the SOE Act.
There is plenty that Marshall would do differently if he had the keys

SA really needs to sort out a better solution for SOE for the future. Can’t imagine other states allowing the PC running the state like we are.

Im still perplexed tbh as to why so many states are under an SOE at all?

NSW has not had an SOE since the bushfires of 2029/20, our Premier has been able to implement Covid restrictions and issue health orders without declaring a SOE.

A SOE should be short lived situation needing heightened attention, where srambling for extra resource to get a situation under control. Once procedures are in place to manage something ongoing it is no longer an emmergency as it is a predictable event which has a planned response which is adequately resourced. Its been 12 months since Covid was an emmergency in most states, with one exception being the height of Victoria's second wave. But a handful of traceable cases does not an emergency make.

And an anonymous source at PA has said that doctors there still haven’t received their first vaccination while senior admin staff with no patient contact have. :(

I was told early on in the proceeding by a politician that in SA there was no provision to enforce things like mask wearing, QR codes etc without the SOE Act being enacted.
Obviously a huge issue in Australia that the states have different settings and regulations.
I believe once of SOE is lifted the government can longer enforce any Covid safe measures

WA needs to in order to enforce its provisions.
I think NSW has setup a different legal framework so that they can do things without the SOE being in place.

I'd expect that could be remedied by some quick action by the Attorney General and likely not contested by the opposition. Just takes the will. But maybe people prefer being Tourism Minister.

From my experience in Tassie so far the virus doesn’t exist. Next to no QR compliance and some places don’t even have the codes. I downloaded the Tas app and check in where I can and I’ve copped some strange looks and at a couple of venues we were told that we don’t need to check in 🤣

I agree we act as though there is no virus in Tas ( and there hasn’t been, for months and months) but I’m finding QR codes to the Tas app almost everywhere I go. Often you have to look carefully for them!!! ( ie a tiny code square on some wall). 😊).

Once authorities and individuals, no matter how benign, get a taste of power and the ability to get people to do exactly as they want, it’s really hard to give up the power.

Compliance is mixed depending on where you go. I went to a pub last night in the Melbourne CBD and there was certainly no enforcement on entry for patrons to scan the QR code. However in defence of the establishment, they were using the Victorian government check in service and there was no shortage of QR codes and entry & inside to check in. Most did stop to scan and send, but not everyone of course.

I heard yesterday on the radio that Police were waiting inside an SA Service Station and fining everyone who hadn't QR checked. Given you are inside for all of a minute, the rest of the time pumping gas. And I think they said it was around $1300 but could be wrong. I think this is total overkill.

Oh dear

Gotta pay the lockdown bill somehow

I would be interested to see how such a fine would go if you challenged it in court...

Today JY said that in both recent clusters which stemed from the PA, patient zero (two separate overseas arrivals) had been in the same room (at separate times). Sounded like she was trying to blame the room, rather than any failure in procedure or to vaccinate key workers.

Why is the Chief Medical Officer behaving like a politician. Shouldn't they be scientific and process driven?

Google the CV see when the person in that position last held a medical/scientific role and might provide some answers for what is happening at the moment...

That’s interesting I’m happy enough and always make a point of checking into bars , restaurants etc but when I run into the local 7/11 or coffee shop for a few minutes it doesn’t even cross my mind!
