Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

It was supposed to be a federal quarantine facility. The site was rejected for political reasons. They finally were dragged kicking and screaming to Pinkenba but still dragged their heels. It s a sad state of affairs when Feds can't bring themselves to accept any recommendations from the other sides notwithstanding the validity.

Quarantine facilities outside of hotels will be needed for years. And don't put too much faith in vaccination being the way out given the potential for future mutations of CoronaVirus and other potential pandemics.

The government doesn't own the land. Wagner is already referring to himself as the landlord of this new quarantine facility.

Pretty understandable the federal government doesn't want to pay for a facility it does not and will not own.

If you want to deny facts, that's fine.

I disagree with your assertion that facilities will be needed for years. I doubt the facility funded by the Queensland government will see anything other than humanitarian or emergency use, but that is just my opinion based mostly on the spread of COVID within the country thus far, principally from NSW. The regional areas of NSW will continue to see more cases, lockdown or not that seems inevitable (as it has been in VIC, spreading from Melbourne).

In fact, the Queensland government would seem to agree with me. Quite how this will work in the long term for future pandemics is beyond me with the agreement they've signed. I dare say the family that own the site are rubbing their hands together.

The financial arrangement between the state government and the Wagner family will be commercial-in-confidence, but the state government has signed a one-year lease, with the option of extending to two or three years.

I for one welcome the new Big 4 Cabin Park Wellcamp.

would be nice, but at this stage it would be mainly pleasant memories. Since US / Japan Jan/Feb 2020, I have now missed 2 local seasons as well as envisaging it will be at least 2023 before a trip north can be considered. Let's leave it for a year or so :-(
Me too. I currently have a booking at Nisekko for Feb 2023, so let's hope it happens.

I'm told there's a racetrack and entertainment complex being built by the Wagner family there, so I'm sure the accommodation will have a life after quarantine.

Last year in Melb at a park / playground in Highett, there were circles (2.5M approx diameter) at spacing f 1.5M apart from closest point, painted on the ground right near the playground.
For sole purpose of people not sitting too close to other groups.
It was a very strange feeling seeing them, about 20 circles. Never saw them anywhere else.

From a climate emergency declared council painting these painted circles on beautiful grass I might add!

They had these circles on the foreshore next to St Kilda beach as well

They did seem to work quite well I recall when ever I walked past and I guess another measure to remind people even when they were outside to remember to social distance

I'm sure the police won’t be cuffing a little extra 5 month old in a gathering of 6 😂
True - and I wish (not really)... but ours are quite a bit less inconspicuous than that!

Unfortunately for us, our group of eligible and local friends tend to be in the format of 2 parents with 1 or more kids. There's no family within the 5km. Some have 3 kids, so they get nothing from the change, even though both parents are fully vaccinated, as the rules already allowed for anyone in an LGA not of concern to recreate outdoors (incl. eating & drinking) with their household plus another who was not from their household. If anything, the relaxed rule is tougher on paper for these people than they already had; That said, I'm picking you can choose which rule you want to be operating under.

The only benefit I can see for us, is that we might now take it in turns and at times for grown-ups in the group to meet up outdoors and socialise (read: 'get on the cans') for a while. My regular gang of pub buddies is about 5 people, so we're thinking eskys in the park are on the cards between now and >70% of the State fully microchipped.

Cheers,
Matt.

Close -
- fully vaccinated members of same household (plus kids) can have one hour of recreation together if in LGA of concern. This is on top of the one hour of exercise.
- fully vaccinated members of different household (up to 5 members including kids aged 17 and under) can have an outdoor gathering if all are out of LGA of concern and within the normal 5Km/single LGA limit.
I wonder if the police commissioner has signed off on these rules. Somehow I doubt it. He much prefers simple, more restrictive rules to make life easier for the police. I fully expect some adjustments.

He has, it was a joint health & police move. Those were my corrections to the OP's words, but are essentially correct.

I am a bit surprised as it will be difficult to police, but maybe the point is they don't need to police it if it's outside.

the only use i could see for the QLD facility would be bring in entire planeloads of unvaxxed aussies, shoot em up with vacc and make them sit for 2 weeks before you set them loose.

It would be at least 5 weeks in quarantine if they were to do that (I don’t think they will)
2 doses 3 weeks apart and then 2 weeks later they are fully vaccinated

And dentists are also open, yet the myth that they arent persists on this thread.
It is not a myth. Some dentists are open but most aren't. Most dentists are interpreting the rules as allowing them only to treat emergencies, others are being more flexible.

My dentist has now rescheduled my July checkup and clean to August, then September and now (as of Monday this week) to October. Mrs SS, who has a different dentist, has had her September 2 checkup / clean rescheduled to first week of November.

One of the cygnet's has had his orthodontist appt rescheduled 4 times and received a message today that his September appt now needs to be pushed back to October.

We and our dentists are in an LGA that has 2 active cases from the current wave. We are all fully vaccinated. I am beyond annoyed about this.

It sounds like your experience is different. if so, good for you.

Sorry but Wellcamp is really not being built primarily as a quarantine facility. Back at the beginning it was stated as possibly being used for agricultural workers. Being on the Darling Downs that makes a lot of sense. The feds were not fooled.

Yes, far from a myth.

Your report mirrors my experience in Melbourne. My city-centre dentist was open briefly, between lockdowns. Fortunately, I was able to book an appointment. No hope these past few weeks, though, for family members seeking appointments, and no bookings on offer for coming weeks.

Not a myth, urban or otherwise.

Exactly.

Additionally some dentists and other personal care services will decide not to open until they have had one dose or double dose of the covid vaccine.

It seems this is the way the NSW Government will soon operate on an interim basis with retail(after mid-September/post-70%) - all customer facing staff need to be fully vaccinated or one dose.

Some dentists may have CHOSEN not to open at the moment, but there is nothing in the restrictions preventing them from doing so. Just because your dentist is not operating, doesnt mean that many others arent open. Nothing to stop you from going to an alternate dentist if the need is urgent enough.

Im all in favour for all personal services based businesses like dentists, physios, optomitrists, nail salons, hairdressers etc having policies where only vaccinated people can attend, it totally make sense when you are working in such close proximity to people.
