Australian state border restrictions

(From QLD CHO and Premier) Greater Sydney open to QLD from December 1, announcement tomorrow on Victoria's status but expected to also be December 1.

But no announcement on the rules for slamming it shut again, some transparency would be nice. Cant see anyone booking much in advance given Qld doesnt trust its own track and trace capabilties instead opting to use borders as their primary control.

This is going to be a huge huge issue to overcome I agree

Announced for NSW 1st Dec.
I'm in Vic and announcement tomorrow.
Initially news said both on 1st Dec.
Booked flight.
Have I gone to early?????
If the flights going surely she won't make it later than 1st Dec if no cases in next 24 hrs?????

How long did it take for QF to load additional MEL-SYD slights into its system? Only 4 QF flights BNE-SYD ATM on the first few days of Dec.

Sort of an announcement re Vic. this from AP's facebook feed. Says Vic passes the 28 days tomorrow. Don't cancel your flight yet!

Cheers skip

QF and JQ keep adding SYD/MEL flighst as they kept selling out, once 23rd was annoucned as the day. QF have plenty of aircraft and staff they can put back into service.

Thats said Id only book using points or a refundable fare, because there is no certainty the border wont slam shut again.

Given the number of sim sessions required, I'd expect the airlines to be able to requalify an average of 1 crew per day (per type). So, if you start tomorrow (which probably isn't possible, as some warning is needed), your first extra crew comes on line in around a week. That means the flying won't be able to suddenly ramp up.

And with NSW/VIC coming online yesterday and both QLD/NSW and QLD/VIC online from Dec 1 that is an enourmous enourmous increase in domestic flying.....

Going to be a very busy few weeks!

And we are waiting on an announcement from WA now on opening to VIC and NSW which will add even more routes.

Qantas seems to think it will be able to ramp up capacity to QLD fairly quickly - QANTAS AND JETSTAR BOOST FLIGHTS TO SUNSHINE STATE IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

Qantas website crashed for a few minutes earlier today as well suspect there are a lot of people frantically clicking before the next case emerges ;)

This x 100000,00000:

“Australia as a whole needs certainty about state borders staying open, particularly when the testing and tracing framework is now so well established. We renew our calls for a consistent set of rules that apply nationwide to prevent hasty, patchwork decisions on borders being made.”

I suspect that Qantas was already ramping up staff readiness anticpating the border reopening.

the board appears to be heavily tilted in favour of Jetstar in that announcement

Qantas Airlines - part of the Jetstar Group... Pretty predicatable attempt to JQ-ize as much as they can under the cover of the Covid crisis. About a subtle as a sledgehammer.

Going head to head with Jane Hrdlika no doubt

So I duly made a booking to/from SYD (quite exciting, haven't been on a plane in 8 months) and a few hours later I get this email from QFF.

If your status is due to expire in 2021 simply book a Qantas flight, and we will extend your Frequent Flyer Platinum status for a further 12 months. Plus, we’ll give you a headstart on maintaining your status beyond 2022 with the ability to rollover up to 500 eligible Status Credits into your next membership year.

Was wondering if the offer is backdated, found the thread and discovered it was for flights booked from yesterday  .

Cheers skip

That's just one route. But, I guess if you're only having to run one part of the network, you can do so without using too many resources.

Not what I was hearing from the pilots. In fact the opposite. But then I guess I only talk to QF pilots, not JQ ones.

If you have a look at the link, QF & JQ are increasing or reinstating flights on 21 routes. It's quite substantial.

On the routes mentioned in the press release:

QF is moving from 25 flights/week to 128 flights/week
JQ is moving from 17 flights/week to 274 flights/week

What you’re hearing is consistent with what I’m seeing. They ramped up flights in the first week of Dec later, and a lot less than in the second week.

cheers skip.
