Western Australia tightens border rules for Victoria

Western Australia is putting tougher travel rules with Victoria in place from midnight, introducing a hard border with the state.

The new rules mean no one who has been in Victoria within the previous 14 days will be allowed to enter Western Australia without an exemption.

It means, from midnight, WA will have hard borders in place with Australia’s three most populous states.

West Australians currently in Victoria are being urged to “return without delay”.

Australia looks to be joining the list of once successful countries in managing the pandemic, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam etc.

We become too complacent and did not proactively foresee emerging strains and change our management as appropriate....and the management have disappeared...

Bravo the great Coronawealth - it’s unseemly to witness the inter and intrastate bickering like watching drunken relatives after boozy Christmas lunch….

Hmmm yes, QLD today labelling this the ‘Sydney Strain’ in the press conference today was a new low that’s for sure.

The precise words from the QLD Premier were “What we are seeing is this Delta Sydney strain spreading to Victoria”….

Anna or Jeanette said that?

The QLD Premier said it disappointingly.

Anyway back on topic, I’m wondering if VIC will squash this faster than NSW and other states will open to them faster….? Any thoughts or crystal balls?? Just trying to ‘plan’ some logistics….

I think that is a given - VIC learnt the hard way that going hard and early is best.

I think NSW will go for weeks and weeks unless the restrictions are tightened

Far from me having a crystal ball, but I'd preferred a initial 7-day lockdown, I'm not sure 5 days enough to kill off this Delta Sydney strain, even with lockdown-heavy.

I predict it'll be extended by 5 days & finish on Sunday week 11.59pm.

I think it will be faster than NSW.
I’m hopeful that regional VIC will open pretty soon and Melbourne to follow after the 5 days

Next couple of days crucial. If anything the Delta strain has been an absolute wake-up call to the benefit of short/sharp lockdowns.
I think there were a few “incursions” prior to Delta both in Victoria and most of the other states that with the benefit of hindsight probably could have been managed without the full lockdowns.

But I’m just in the Drs peanut gallery and am in absolute awe of what most of the CHOs in Australia have been able to do for us so far.

We need to set an end date for lockdowns and state border closures and draw the line (barring the emergence of some vaccine resistant new variant that sets us back to square one). All of the vulnerable have had plenty of time to be vaccinated. For the rest of the population the virus shouldn't be deadly if caught and even they have had time to get the first jab. I'm in 2B and have had my first jab, so can the others. How much longer can we keep on closing down to protect those who won't protect themselves?

This, without the "new variant" caveat, which is just going to be a figleaf for bad government actors.

This sounds good in theory but in practice if we let it rip and 10% of those who contract Covid (the current admission rate in Sydney) end up in hospital it won’t just be covid casualties.
The hospitals will become overwhelmed and there will be deaths from many other treatable conditions.
Mass vaccination is by far the best way to end the lockdowns and state border closures.
This is something the Gigi Fosters can’t grasp.

We have - once the vast majority have had a chance to be vaccinated.

As a "younger" person i completely disagree, I am not yet eligible to get vaccinated, once again the young generation should be the lambs to the slaughter? we have all made the sacrifices of lockdowns to protect the 60+, now they are vaccinated they want to open up?
