Australian women on Qatar flight internally examined

Why didn't they look at CCTV footage? Airports are full of CCTV.

If l were travelling through DOH and my wife was subjected to this, l would have been ropeable.

I agree, ropable.
Perhaps some women were wearing loose baggy ‘cover’ for religious reasons and the cctv camera would be unreliable.
If this poor woman had been a ‘maid’ and one of the many sexually abused by her employer, she would have been dragged off to jail for a very long time.
(Some women don’t know they are pregnant).
With all of those women involved on all of those planes from different countries I am still amazed we are only hearing about it weeks later.

Have other nations lodged concerns with Qatar over treatment of their citizens? Surely its not just Australia who is disgusted over their citizens treatment.

Yes and being Qatar you wouldn't have been able to do a single thing about it.

Hopefully. QF will be able to step up.

Qatar Govt now saying that the baby was an attempted infanticide by being left in a rubbish bin. I think one would have to be naive to believe anything they say, sadly.

Unfortunately this is likely to hurt Australians more than the Qataris.

This brought back bad memories of my first flying experience when emigrating to Australia in 1972.
My husband and I ( and all passengers) were taken off the plane, marched into Tehran airport, searched at gunpoint, my camera was seized and film destroyed and other atrocities. It can never be erased unfortunately, then when re-boarding, we were all sprayed with some disinfectant.
Now with Covid-19, I will not venture out of Australia again for a very long time. Sorry folks, but I wont!

The SMH is also reporting that the baby Girl was in a plastic bag with rubbish on top an an apparent attempt to conceal her. If this is accurate does this now make it an attempted murder investigation, and does this explain, or at least mitigate, the Qataris graceless actions, as all women in the appropriate demographic become potential suspects ?
I ask this as a question, not a statement.

"This was the first instance of an abandoned infant being discovered in such a condition at HIA – this egregious and life-threatening violation of the law triggered an immediate search for the parents, including on flights in the vicinity of where the newborn was found," according to a statement from the Qatari government.

I'd hate to think what might have happened to the mother if they had found her.

Or an acceptance that there is nothing that we can personally do about entrenched beliefs and there are too many elephants in the room when it comes to religion.
Unfortunately that's what millions of Germans said after WW2.

Imagine if Martin Luther King had felt that way?
Gandhi?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

Or 4 women in NZ who changed the law in both NZ & Australia in the late 1960s/early 1970s when the wife & kids could be kicked out by the husband, given $20 and that was it?

If enough different 'one person' take a stand then even more can happen.

Apathy on the other hand is an all-too-easy cop-out. :(

It certainly doesn't mitigate Qataris actions. How would it be if this was the evidence gathering method in a developed country.

I understand what you are saying but they railed against their Government and not a foreign entity. And any attempts to change a foreign entity let alone the basis of the spiritual belief? Because at the core of this is religion and religious interpretations.

Reported today on several news outlets.

Utterly horrific. Totally inexcusable. Can’t imagine the distress.

Surely DNA cheek swabs could have been used instead if they were that suspicious.

Will never fly Qatar or transit Doha ever again.

Very horrific and even more so The baby was alive and our under rubbish. Baby now doing well

Some people online have been saying that a pregnancy test would have picked up HCG (within a certain time frame after childbirth) and found the mother

Can someone with medical background comment on this?

Further Developments today:
A Department of Foreign Affairs official, who was among women affected but not searched, was the first to raise the alarm with Australian authorities shortly after the incident occurred on October 2.

“The nature of the most unfortunate event that triggered this action meant that the women who were being searched were by definition, needed to be of child bearing age,” DFAT secretary Frances Adamson told the hearing.

“So women who were not of child bearing age … were not searched and that included our staff member.

“They were asked to leave a plane with no information given.”

As I said earlier up the thread somewhere, whatever the Qataris say now I will not take at face value.

+1

Remember when the Saudi's killed Khashoggi and they didn't know the Turks had started putting the puzzle together (rather quickly), and were drip feeding information to the press, contradicting the Saudis, making them (Saudi's) look like idiots. This is the same.
