re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Check the policy wording. With CBA which is underwritten by Zurich (most banks use Zurich) you have to spend a certain amount of money on the card such as $1250 each with CBA, on the trip before you leave Australia. Some policies require the whole ticket to be bought with the card concerned.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

this is a common problem with credit card insurance. Some credit cards will only cover you if you buy your ticket through the credit card... points bookings are therefore excluded... because the whole cost of the ticket was not purchased through the card.

There are several permutations on the above, so if any doubt, best to call and confirm. (one card for example will only cover points bookings if you have earned the points through the card itself, so using LM/USDM/QFFF etc... no coverage, even if you pay the fees and taxes)

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

:confused::confused:  I hope not as I have used just such a scenario myself. The points could have been warehoused inside LM or SQ or any FF scheme prior and Amex are not to know this nor how they were earned.
In my case I transferred points from Altitude (Westpac) and paid taxes etc using Westpac Black amex. Car hire, accommodation etc paid using Westpac Black MC. The insurances are offered under the Black card combo so I would expect as all travel having been paid on the either of the black combo the insurance would be effective.

WBC require a minimum $500 spend for coverage to take effect.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Thank you Dale. When I read the policy I did not see any condition like that, just that ticketing must be paid for on Westpac Black. 2 tickets on MH cost me around $1,800 in taxes and fuel surcharge before we left anyway, and car hire pre-paid on Westpac Black around $1,600. Whilst o/s paid for everything using Westpac Black.

Thanks, I was just about to post the same thing markis. lol

So with Westpac Black at least it looks like a minimum $500 pre-paid o/s expenses.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

At the end of the day I have an annual policy from TID that covers me regardless of what credit card I use. $300-400PA for peace of mind is nothing in my books.

On the issue of which credit card - ours is an AmEx Platinum Charge Card - the requirement for travel insurance is to pay (at least) the taxes on an award ticket. This is why I am keen to use this card when ticketing my first ever LM award. (We have a backup ANZ VISA GOLD which only requires that you pre-pay $250 of your trip - this can be anything; e.g. hotel, etc). What has been frustrating with AmEx is that the conditions on their travel insurance have changed from time to time.

Very interesting, just got a quote for $434 pa. May well take them up on it considering the amount of overseas travel we do (4-5 times a year).

Thanks! Does this work even if you purchase "new" miles to transfer? although assume that wouldn't be as lucrative as transferring miles purchased during a previous bonus offer...

It's just as lucrative.

You have 2 accounts, you start with 1,000 in one then play tennis...cost is still USD15/1000, same as a purchase promo.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Oh that's awesome advice. so you can transfer as many times as you like! Thanks so much - you just saved me a bunch :)

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - New FF program in *A

Yes, but as you said, you will have to buy at 3 cents, and then the transfers at 1.5 cents will kick in, so your average cost will be higher than 1.5 cents if you were just trasnsfering old miles
