Avoid QF3/QF4 To/From Honolulu

IIRC correctly AP have never had a 747-SP. perhaps you are thinking of an older 100 or 200 series?

He didn't say anything about an Air Pacific 747-SP, he listed the aircraft showing Qants 747, Qantas 747 classic, Air Pacifc 747 and 737 and then shared his experiances over multiple flights.

I guess many people just don't realise how good we have it this day. What we have and expect these days is light years ahead of the past. Indeed I recall it was only in 2003 that I first flew business class on a Qantas 747 going to the US with a seat that didn't turn into a bed and IFE that was on loop. Oh how times have changed.

Except to HNL which has not changed and is stuck in a 1990's time warp, which is part of the whole contention of this thread. Pathetic QF, just pathetic :(

Ooops.. I read it too fast.... my bad

QF is not the only airline who do not offer Personal IFE for certain mid-long haul international flights. I believe that the LH 747's do not all contain personal IFE yet, you have UA's 747's for an even longer flight than SYD-HNL and MH have 330's without personal IFE to name a few.

The 767's may rattle a bit, but apart from the lack of the Personal IFE the product isn't too bad. Dreamtime seems to be an ok business product.

A bit of foresight for the 767's would have great for them...

The 767 is still a good aircraft. While it's not as efficient as the A330 in longer distances, a bit of an interior update is pretty all the 767s need to extend their life time. I think it's still a pretty reliable fleet, despite its age?

Wife self just did the SYD/HNL/SYD in J on Jetstar last week, I must say was rather surprised at the excellent service and the food too, lucky, guy in front hardly had his seat declined and on return had bulkhead seats lots room, feet could just touch wall. No back seat AVOD but had my iPad loaded with movies I rented before departure and wife and I watched a few, audio via a dual headphone adapter (have 2 sets Bose noise cancelling headphones).

Fare paid was $4300 for both of us, was a good deal, plus all the QFF J points, bonus points (5,000) and Status points for both of us (wife SS me SG) very handy. Half the FF points and bonus have arrived already!. Previous trip 2 years ago SYD/HNL/SYD was QA old plane expensive, not recommended.

Only drawback was that very old Q lounge in middle of nowhere at HNL, not been upgraded in years, the staircase to the lounge was filthy, basically stayed 15 mins and left.

Similar to QF79/80 PER-NRT. This is almost a 10 hr flight, in a 767. No AVOD in Y, and looped entertainment in J.

I flew this sector in Dec 2010/Jan 2011 in J. Seats are dreamtime (not lie flat). Comfortable enough, but still a kick in the teeth given the price paid.

Unfortunately not much choice for direct flights to Tokyo from Perth - and I was connecting through to AA. So, whilst I would have liked to have avoided it, there wasn't much choice.

Didnt QF cut the NRT route out of Perth earlier this year?

Does anyone know a better way to get to HNL in business class? I have plenty of AMex and Oneworld points but can't seem to find a route that works. I refuse to spend my points on a business class and aircraft older than me!!

Mel-lax-hnl?

Yes but what's a good option for LAX-HNL ?

You are going to get the "Y+" experience on any airline flying that route from memory ?

May was well just fly Jetstar "Business Class" and save quite a bit of time/$$

MEL-LAX-HNL seems and awful lot of flying just to avoid flying JQ/QF and you'll end up paying the same anyway.

MEL-NAN-HNL would be an option, particularly if you can get the 744 (which would mean going via SYD or BNE - although the price is within a few dollars to do so).

Scrimo - I think Hawaiian Airlines have changed from 767 to A330 recently. You would have to connect through SYD but could possibly earn/burn Virgin Velocity if you fly VA and Hawaiian. Once you add in all the JQ "business" fares and earning bundles you may find that Hawaiian may be competative with JQ. No-one in their right mind pays the full QF J fares to Hawaii - but if you have loads of QFF points and can get a decent JASA or J classic then others have reported that its an OK way to go.

There are other threads around this topic from last year here in AFF including this post on another forum:

Good luck and enjoy Hawaii!

We did an AA YUPP HNL-LAX last week. The F seats were really nice, service very good. Better IFE than QF3, the week before, as we didn't even have Personal screens in J on that flight! :o

But that does add time and expense to the trip. I've heard some good things about Air NZ on this route, I'm not sure if Amex points can be used with them?

@RedRoo, can you confirm as to whether or not Personal IFE has been removed from the Dreamtime Seats (J) of the International 767's?

I forgot about Air NZ - but after checking I suspect that will make you overnight in Auckland - which is pretty inconvenient and time consuming - but may be proper J class at least. Others have mentioned that Hawaiian J class seat pitch is much more generous than JQ Starclass seating.

NZ to HNL definitely not 'Business Premiere'; It's a 763 with recline seats.

The Dreamtime seats of QF are better. (Although they do have a reasonable AVOD.)

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

I'm flying with family on QF3 this Sept. Does anyone know if they are going to offer the Q steaming on this 767? Cant see why their trial has lasted so long and the fact they didnt deploy these yet on this type of route
