Avoid QF3/QF4 To/From Honolulu

NZ to HNL definitely not 'Business Premiere'; It's a 763 with recline seats.

The Dreamtime seats of QF are better. (Although they do have a reasonable AVOD.)

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Correct, but I believe the 777-200 is operating for a period of time from AKL-HNL

My main issue with the Hawaiian flight is that although it earns points with DJ/VA it doesn't earn status...

I agree - that is a big problem for a lot of people - especially considering the amount of money you have to pay to get to Honolulu.

Looks like I will be going with Qantas QF3 to HNL in September as they have the best J Class seats out of a bad bunch going direct to the HNL from here.

Jetstar & Hawiian have recline, but Qantas beats them both in pitch. Also like the single seat option on Qantas.

AirNZ after August this year goes back to the recline seats as well (as their "test" of a lie flat product to HNL from AKL) comes to an end.

There are no lie flat options from LAX either to HNL either.

So the best of an uninspiring bunch is Qantas with their old Dreamtime seats. Their have been rumours over the past 3 years of them upgrading the product on this route but this has never come to fruition and i'm not holding my breath.

Once QF has taken deliveries of all 787s ordered, we'll probably find the HNL route "upgraded" to a dom configured A330 that's overdue for retirement.

So... I wonder when that will ever be? 2018..? QFi is operating at a loss on the HNL sectors ?

Hi Guys,

Well May 2012 and nothing has changed. This is the second worst QF flight I have ever been on. The aircraft should have been retired 10 years ago and the 2nd class mass entertainment system is something you do not get on a domestic flight let alone a 10 hour jump to / from Honolulu. Absolute cough !!!

The service was crummy, food awful, worn and creaky seats - cough !

QF3 ran out of meals and the guys in the back received fish, fish or fish and then on QF4 back to Sydney they had a fault with all the toilets on the right hand side of the plane which were unserviceable during the 10.5 hour return flight. So the pilot says, "Please refrain form using the restrooms unless it is absolutely necessary" LOL I was under the impression the only time you would use them is if it was necessary.

My advice, until this route is upgraded look at Jet Star or another Airline.

Our of curiosity, any particular reason that QF doesn't deploy an A332 Int config on this route?

The 332's are in limited supply and have always been used elsewhere.

That may have been true in the past but with the demise of the LAX-AKL run they are now free, so its a valid question!

They seem to be moving on to PER intl runs and to BKK as well for what ever reasons

Hi Guys,

My advice, until this route is upgraded look at Jet Star or another Airline.

I certainly took your advice, last month.

Flew SYD-DRW-DPS (JQ), DPS-SIN-BKK (SQ C class), BKK-HND (TG C class (very nice 777-300 lie flat seats)) and HND-HNL in C class on a NH 767 which was nicely refurbished.

Have to say that HND is a nice airport with very helpful staff (as opposed to NRT).

So... I wonder when that will ever be? 2018..? QFi is operating at a loss on the HNL sectors ?

QF has said publicly on a number of occasions that the HNL route is profitable for both QF and JQ - in fact, it's unique in that regard.

I'm taking this flight with the family in August and think its a disgrace that they can't find a A330 for this route! Everyone has accepted the 767 on Domestic flights but surely this is not acceptable for International. Especially for a 10hr flight. At worst its 4.5hrs from Mel to Per, so lets get one of the A330 planes going to HNL!

On the flip side they know (QFi) there is no competition so its easy to leave it as is!

Im taking this flight in September and will let you know my thoughts when I return. Just my luck, an old Qantas Business Class product to Hawaii on the way over (albeit the best of a bad bunch), and now the A380 I was returning on from LAX are being reconfigured and not for the better :(
