Aww how pretty, a little yellow tag

I take your point (but not the probe)... except in this specific case I was 10 minutes from the plane to the carousel and I don't think I've ever taken more than 30 minutes, usually abt 20 and the J/F bags are always there.

Isn't that because LAX has a dedicated carousel for F/J bags? In fact, I don't think any other airport I've been to has had a separate carousel for F/J bags.

CDG, coming off a SQ flight F/J/priority bags were coming off a different carousel in Terminal 1. (Would have to note that the Y bags were coming out first but soon after the F/J carousel started spinning and a lot of the premium pax left well and truly before most of the Y pax) Interesting terminal design but not one I'd like to visit again any time soon.

I noticed this at the MEL carousel for Virgin Australia yesterday. Priority has a purple taped off area where a human pulls priority bags on to the floor. All kinds of other bags were coming off and the occasional Priority tagged bag in between. I have noted at many airports when I was late to check-in/bag-drop, my bag was one of the first to come off. I imagine that inside the hold, the chap who gets a late Y bag isn't going to drag it past the F/J bags.

Yes, that certainly helps. But they still have to get the F/J/WP bags off the plane, into the delivery system and onto the carousel. There have been other threads about how 'priority baggage' is supposed to work, and IIRC, it mainly comes down the proper loading at the departure end. ie F/J etc either 'last loaded' or in a last loaded container.

As I mentioned, I've had consistently good experiences at LAX, mainly ex SYD but also ex MEL, like last time. Maybe it has something to do with the A380 and some particular demands of the LAX baggage system meaning that the Australian end is under more demand than usual to load it right.

ps Reno NV was another winner when I used to fly there in the mid '000s. Every time I arrived at the carousel, the bags had arrived, and were stacked next to it. First time I waited for 20 minutes, getting very huffy before I noticed the bags sitting adjacent :oops:

* Tips for shorter queuing times at LAX and probably anywhere (not saying you need the tips, just say'n):

- Walk rapidly from plane to immigration area. You've been in a tin can for XX hours, so the exercise will do you good (not for those sensitive to DVT though). Every 10 people or so you pass will save you time (based on 10 queues);

- Scan the queues. Avoid any heavy with pax apparently from Mexico, China, Korea, or with people with bits of paper in their hands;

- Go to the far end of the hall; most pax just join one of the first 1-3 queues they come across.

This is what frustrates me about US immigration. Why don't they use snake queues so if you do end up with someone of interest in the line in front of you you are not delayed? Isn't that simple?

yellow tag? photo please...
Don't have a photo but it is a very bright yellow tag that they put on F luggage. Still doesn't make it come out before non priority luggage....(or not consistently anyway)

I threw mine away in disgust, but it looks similar to this (except it says "Qantas" and "FIRST" instead of "Delta" etc...)

Last time I flew SYDLAX in F my bags came off from, what felt like, the seventieth baggage container. Waited SO long after getting through immigration in two minutes. Flew MELLHR in F the next month and my bag was first off. Horses for courses.

Sometimes my bag comes out first. Sometimes it comes in middle. Sometimes it comes out towards the end. Other times I have no idea when it comes out as I am not there but in the lounge having a quiet drink or 2.

As long as my bag comes out then I am happy....

I've had this happen on all different airlines with priority baggage, doesn't seem to be a Qantas thing.

probably not necessarily a qantas thing... but certainly more an Australian thing. I generally find asian airports pretty much get the priority thing right every time... china, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan. get to Australia and its a different matter (London was a bit the same to be fair).

I have had mixed success in Asia with priority luggage on QF, VS, CX, MH.

Very true. Nothing worse than waiting and waiting and waiting at the carousel, and finally coming to the realisation that your bag is not coming at all, and then having to chase it up. It's happened to me a few times, which is why I will avoid checking in luggage at all costs nowadays!
