BA has been banned from overflying Russia, is QF next?

Not surprising. I’m guessing UAE aren’t going to be particularly anti-Russia, perhaps too much oligarch money in Dubai for that?
UAE along with India and China, abstained from voting on the UN General Assembly holding a session on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Well that just about writes off EK for me.
I couldn't fly with anyone that supports what Russia is doing, no thank you.

Abstain vote as good as a vote of support.

Yes the UAE along with India abstained from the UN resolution condemning Russia.
India, because it uses Russian air defence missiles, and the UAE because they are pissed off with the US after Biden reneged on Trumps promise to sell them F 35 fighter jets.

when i flew to Lhr in Jan the pilot mentioned the flight would be mostly over Russia. how times have changed, now i see QF9 has flown over Iraq.

So out of pure interest, does this mean now that Iraq is receiving fly over our air space fees from Airlines?
(Instead of Russia)

Would it be bit of a cash cow or is it very small irrelevant fee.

I was thinking the same. I do wonder if Putin will raise funds/sell gold, etc through the UAE.

Wonder if it makes a difference, lot of QR flights always went over Iraq anyway. And not everyone seems to like flying over Iraq, both BA and SQ seem to be avoiding it:

Avoiding Turkmenistan but happy to fly over Afghanistan

Although they cross Afghanistan where it is about 30km wide, so that's about 2 minutes ...

I don't think flying over either country is particularly dangerous, but I guess it means they would rather give money to the Taliban than to Gurbanguly.

ANA and JAL are canceling their European services citing safety issues over Russia, but Finnair are restarting their Tokyo flights with a new route adding over 3 hours to the flight time.

Unsurprising with tourists still not allowed. Japan wont even be appealing for transit traffic with these long flight times and then there's the oil price hitting $110+ a barrel

JAL have a flight on Friday operating HND-LHR that's scheduled for 15:40 (about 3 hours longer than normal) so looks like they are going to fly around Russia on this route.

I would hazard a guess that Japan is about to announce an airspace ban for Russian airlines.

Commencing March 9th Finnair have announced a 4 x weekly flight to NRT avoiding Russian airspace. The new flight time is 13 hours. Any ideas how this will be achieved ?
