Re: Flight Availability/Loadings & Upgrade Probability Help Desk

First time post so apologies if I'm asking novice questions. I have booked two tickets through Qantas classic rewards, on QF9 (Melb to Heathrow) on Dec 1. Any advice on best seating would be appreciated as I notice at present there are no seats actually allocated against the two tickets. Also possibility of upgrade to either premium economy or business - using points?

Re seats, I'm travelling with my 17 year old son, so happy to give him a window.

Many thanks

One of the pairs by the window on the upper deck (i.e. rows 32-36) would have to be the best option, but these don't appear to be available on that flight. Unfortunately the majority of other good seats appear already taken as well. So, I think any of the available seats will be more or less the same. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

There is a chance of upgrading with points to business or premium economy, even though you've booked classic rewards - it will just be more expensive than usual. The good news is that this flight doesn't appear to be full (yet) in any of the premium cabins, so there is a chance of success if you put in an upgrade request.

Some advice please. Will be flying SYD to DFW (and return in Y). Of the various paid exit row seats, which would people recommend.

On the way over 48B, 66 HJK, 79 HJ, 80K and 35E are available.

For the return 66HK, 79H are available.

I'm 5'10 so leg room isn't so much of an issue to be honest. I just like a bit of personal space and even just having a seat next to me free is more of an advantage for me. Looks ilke the upper deck Y is unavailable to me currently (only PS). I don't care about not having access to the in-flight screen for take-off and landing. I also have a J upgrade request in for the return sector, but given travel is in less than two weeks and only PS, I don't like my chances of that coming through.

Sitting near a toilet or where people stand around is also less appealing to me. Thoughts appreciated.

Also, I prefer aisle seats. I find them a bit more spacious and like the freedom of getting up and down without hassling someone else (happy to be hassled).

80K would be my pick of that bunch-no through traffic around you

Bit stuffed on the way back.

79H has the issue of people walking through a curtain into your outstreched legs.

Don't discount 66K - there's plenty of shoulder width as the fuselage wall curves up and away from you. Also, the cowlings are minimal in that row.

As always, thanks for the quick responses. 80K paid for on the way over. Hopefully the upgrade gods smile on my for the return sector.

How thoroughly do they assess you at check in to make sure you are eligible for an exit row seat? Do you have to demonstrate that you meet all of the criteria or is it just a case of not looking obviously feeble?

Should not be a problem on wide bodied planes, as staff can access the doors. Diffent on domestic flights wher the criteria will be enforced.

Hi, has anyone had recent experience with 35F. I have 80A booked but hear that it gets cold. Do that many people walk through the row between 34 and 35? I'm liking the idea of the quieter area upstairs. I have read the whole thread and read numerous opinions. Also worried about the curve in at the feet level of 80A.

I would go with 35F since the smaller Y cabin upstairs tends to be quieter. Having said that, I've done maybe 10 trips in 80A/K and a few more in 35D/F/J/K and all these seats are great, but I still prefer row 35. Only on 1 flight there was an idiot who walked 10 times between row 34 and 35, I eventually told him about the corridor behind row 36...
The protruding emergency slide is not a problem in 80A/K and I'm 6'4".

You can roll the dice and try 36F; 36D and 36E are supposed to be the very last seats allocated and generally go empty unless the flight is full.

When we did the A380 upstairs a few months back the FAs wouldnt let anyone cross in front of 35, making them use the corridor instead.

I think people who use walk in front of row 35 are simple not aware of the corridor at the back of the cabin. Similarly, people aren't aware that you can just go down the stairs at the rear where there's usually a free loo, rather than queue for the single one upstairs.

Now that depends on the FA as there has been several occasions where the crew have stopped me going down the stairs as it was too Dangerous..........

Seriously? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. How else are you meant to get to the snacks downstairs? Do they also suggest to the F pax that using the stairs at the front to access the lounge/bar is too dangerous?

First time I went down I just asked how to open the gate. They just asked me to ensure its closed once I'm through it.

Yes seriously I did mention that I had done it many many times but was told I was not allowed to on those flights and should never have been allowed in the first place ......

Thanks Blackcat20 I've booked 35f and am looking forward to not having a seat reclining back into me.

There's snacks laid out in the upstairs galley which I found out recently when on QF11 when I had 33A.
