Best Y cabin on the A380?

Hi all! My partner & I are flying the QF1 to LHR on Monday (16 May).

We were hoping to score a pair of seats together on the upper deck but only the middle seats in Row 32 are available. All the other recommended Y seats seem to be taken (Exit rows, 80, and so forth).

At the moment we've got Row 69 H&K and are hoping we won't have someone between us, as there seem to be a few free seats.

However, would greatly appreciate any thoughts on:
  • Best cabin: is it worth picking the middle cabin (Rows 66-77) to avoid bassinets, or is it still better to pick the front cabin (Rows 44-65) to get off quicker & reduce the effect of any turbulence, or the final cabin (Rows 79 to 88) because it's smaller and seems to have more free seats?
  • Can we trust the seat map closer to departure and pick seats in rows where the seat directly in front is available (ie so we won't have anyone reclining into our seats), or will these just be allocated to people who haven't pre-selected seats on check-in? And same with the seats being free between us?
  • Rows 51A&C are available - are there any benefit to these seats (they do not have the extra legroom as per 51K)
  • Row 77H&K are also available - last row of the middle cabin, in front of the snack bar - are these any good or better to avoid?

Thanks in advance! Anything to make this flight slightly less painful would be excellent - we've put in for an upgrade to Y+ but it seems there's only 7 blocked seats so I'm not holding my breath!

Row 66 middle are VERY good seats. If you are under about 187cm there is lot's of legroom.

Thanks serfty. Unfortunately Row 66 is gone (and all the other seats that are commonly recommended and exit row seats) ... it's just the Row 32 middle on the upper deck that's available.

If you are not overly tall, I'd be happy with Row 32 Upper Deck...smaller cabin, decent enough legroom if you aren't too tall.
We had 32J/K recently and it was good......I'd take 32 middle above any of the remaining downstairs Y, if the usual suspects are taken

I misread you post as being row 66 seats were available.

Then go for row 32 ...

Thanks cjd600 and serfty (apologies if my post was unclear). I hesitated about 32 as my partner's ~180cm and now the whole middle of Row 32 is gone! :-|Quick and the dead!

Stupid question, but I have access to 66D-G (no access upstairs Row32), for myself, Mrs + 2 kids.
Showing as Exit Row, so kids not allowed to select these seats..
I 'assumed' Exit Row only being the side seats of A/B/C and H/J/K, not the D/E/F/G bulkhead in the middle....
Assuming this is correct, and not worth a call to see if we can be seated in the 66 D-G bulkhead?

I do believe 66 DEFG are actually extra leg room seats and selectable at $30.00 per seat for non status members, as such these should be available to select for Children. Have seen children seated in that section of row 66 on previous flights.

Yes, they are available for $30.
No probs selecting for myself or the missus.
Go to select for one of the kids, and the seats 'grey out' as unavailable (with below pop-up)...that's why I was wondering if calling might help, as I thought I recall having seen kids in that row as well

Seat Information: Children and infants are not eligible to sit in an exit row seat. See the exit row seat conditions and requirements.

Absolutely give them a call you have nothing to lose.

If you are in 66G for example you cannot fully complete OLCI as it's an exit seat.

I currently have 48A SYD-LAX and 66D LAX-SYD. 80A/K are both open each way for $180, but I'm wondering if the cost is worth it given the seats I have seem pretty good. Any views?
Thanks

The $180 is a lot for the selection of these seats - do you have any 'spare' points you could use instead?

I have about 140,000 pts which I'm hoping to use for upgrades each way, although given the popularity of the route and my mid-tier (SG) status maybe that's overly optimistic

I'm unsure what you paid for the ticket but considering you can pay as little as $1,000 return there's no way another $360 to sit almost at the back of the plane makes sense to me.

Sure 80A/K are 2 of the most sought after economy seats I just don't see the value @ $360.

Have never sat in 48 so cant comment but certainly 66D is a good seat and a good amount of legroom so can recommend.

80a/k on overnight flight = awesome. risky if you're putting in points upgrade as forfeit the cost.

i thought i had read 48A wasn't amazing given curve of plane and everyone boarding through that door (granted only an inconvenience before take off).

48a is good but the door does take a bit of legroom. While it's a bit cramped at boarding it is easy access during the flight and you are off first from economy. 66d is a great seat. Both benefit from having something to put your feet up on while sleeping.
