Welcome to AFF!

This sure has come up a lot lately. The most cost effective way from around here is SYD-AKL-SYD on LAN airlines in business at about $600 for 160 SCs.

If you are in SFO then you can do it on a YUPP fare or two. Do a search in this forum.

Good Luck!

Are you getting there via cheap AA fares from LAX-SFO? I would have thought MEL-SYD-SFO or MEL-LAX-SFO would earn 55 each way.

And if you are flying there every second month on 55 each way that would give you 660 pts - only 40 pts short of gold (try routing some times MEL-SYD-LAX-SFO) and there you would have gold!

When do your SCs expire? If you are heading to SFO, then book an Instant Upgrade fare to LAX, 60 SCs each way in P class. I found this out thanks to fellow members in my SFSC move towards gold - thanks Serfty. ;)
Otherwise the LAN run is a winner, just mind the early flight ex AKL.

The following is only pertinent if you feel PS is worth the expense to you.

When does your "Year" expire?

Do you have another trip to SFO before than?

If so, leave a day early (or come back a day later) and do an MR between SFO and LAX rt and earn 120 SC's for USD330 for P class both ways.

Doing this and another trip with N class one way and O class the other way for USD225 and earn 60 SC's.

I have been flying Qantas Mel-Syd-SFO and sometimes MEL-LAX-SFO i am only getting 45 each way as my year just started again in June i have got 180 credits since then i will get 90 for next route then will need 80 more

whats a instant upgrade fare?

"Instant Upgrade" fares on AA are referred to "YUPP's" or "KUPP"'s (or equivalent).

They are ostensibly "Economy" fare but book into First (P) class (or Business on 3 class AA flights).

You travel up front and earn First Class status credits with QFF for travel in P class.

That's why SFO-LAX in P class earns 60 SC's being 337 miles.

This thread gives a clue - many of the fares referred to are now gone, but you'll get the idea:

1929 SFO to LAX 90 % LAX to SFO
PUPPNR(Displayed Below) 581 LAX to SFO 70 %

OK, you are crediting to QFF for travel on American Airlines (AA) market flights.

The QFF Terms and conditions set out the points and SC earning for travel in various booking classes on partner airlines in the "Airline Earning Table".

For AA, these are:
Code:
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
American GLMNSV Discount Economy 0.5 -
Airlines® (AA) BHKY Economy 1 -
                   DIJ Business 1 25%
                   AFP First 1 50%
                  ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Status Credits are earned on all eligible Booking Classes.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
(If a booking class is not mentioned, then it will not earn points/SC's)

The PUPPNR fare books into P class, so earns for First class.

Using the "Great Circle Mapper", you can see that LAX-SFO is 337 miles. Now look up the Qantas SC earning table shows that eligible travel in First Class between 0 and 600 miles is "Zone 1" and earns 60 Status Credits.

So the 337 miles between SFO and LAX when travelled twice earns 2 x 60 SC's. Travel 3 times and you earn 180 SC's.

Note my suggestion of O class in my previous post here - that is not on the AA earning table so earns nothing. It is USD49 against the PUPPNR P class of USD153, so saves USD104 on your quest - but you do travel in coach.

You should be getting 55 SCs each way, unless booked on a non point earning AA code from LAX-SFO:
MEL-SYD 10 SCs
SYD-SFO 45 SCs

or
MEL-LAX 45 SCs
LAX-SFO 10 SCs (if booked on QF code)
LAX-SFO 0 or 10 SCs (if on AA code - depending on class of fare booked)

Anyway, this probably just flittering around the edges, the AA runs mentioned by others are the way to go.

Note that these fares can be booked online using the AA Australian Portal for AUD383 currently.

It is generally a good idea to check this as savings can sometimes be made; borderline in this case.

Just checked LAX-SFO return for Jan 15 and its $333 AUD Instant Upgrade not bad at all for 120 SC's.

Did you click next to see what the taxes are? ;)

I just did a dummy booking and got $333, plus $50 of taxes, which brings it to $383.

Either way, it's still a good fare for status chasing.

Woops - quite right - so sorry.

If you want 300 SC's in a day it's also doable for around $750 AUD, flying out of SFO (doing these in a few weeks). Ask me if you're interested or look around to see my flight schedules ;)
