Well I bit. Out 21/6 and back 30/6.

Just enough time for a SR.

Missed you by a few days! That is if you're flying exSYD though. Out 19/6 back 29/6, was going to go 30/6 but my mother made me go a day earlier so I don't miss first day of semester two at uni hahah.

Yep, that's the one.

Just called to have my travel buddy's booking linked, and neighbouring seat selected. All good. :D
Hmmm okay. I like what you ended up with, but I think with a party of 3 selecting manually might give a better result.

I managed to choose seats before the payment page.

They don't stick... I selected online as well but when I checked with VA the seats are unallocated. Even did a booking for my cousin on the same flight as mine 30mins after mine and Orbitz still shows my chosen seat as available. Orbitz only requests the seats and waits for VA to confirm the selection...

Well - i've booked and it confirmed!

Out 29/04 and back 06/05.

I changed the departure to Sydney and got direct VA flights on the 777.

Fingers crossed this sticks!

Huge thanks to the OP

Booked, April school holidays - just a week as this trip is really not in the travel budget! My seat selection stuck, the kids didn't :(

Strange that apart from the supplied links i can't find a single cheap flight BNE - LAX anytime of the year.

I've been searching out of Sydney but it only works for me searching $737 return fairs both ways and only with Virgin.

Yeah, just spotted that.
Those available were way to far back ... status was not taken into account.
Does Red status count?

reposting this with a few more additions, esp with a few ex-SYD

Continue and select your flights on Google Flights, the summary page will show Orbitz with the cheaper price, click through on that and it should bring up the trip details in Orbitz.
