We are talking about a routing which is going to happen in 6 months. The goal of this new routing is not for status but simply for me to have some fun and kill some time outside of Thailand before I come home.

Ok, I get it. So you don't do status runs, except for those past times when you were doing a status run :)

I see JASA's;) as just another possibility if falling short on getting to a level.
 
Newbie back again. Thank you very much for all of the information on the abbreviations. At least now I can ask a question without appearing to be completely vague.

I was a WP I believe it is called until February this year. I flew for many years across the country and internationally and didn't really mind too much when I dropped back to SG this year as at least it meant I had been home for more than a few days at a time. Qantas had "comped" me for a year, but clearly flying personal J internationally last year wasn't enough for another freebie.

However, longish tales of past deeds aside - am I to understand I can use my FF points on an ASA and accumulate credits for status? I am very heavy on points and while conscious of their value, would consider using them to top up a status again?

Anyseat awards accrues SC's and points just like a normal fare, and there are some good redemptions to be had if you research the options.

Yes, that is correct. Obviously the points required for an ASA vary significantly so keep an eye out for bargains. You will also earn FF points so you can take this into account when assessing the 'net' cost (in points) of the ticket.

Note: When deciding whether to use my points for taxes or pay cash, I compared the cost of buying pro-rata top up points and it was more cost effective to pay the taxes in cash.

Mark call it what you like but there is a difference between status runs and maximising SCs.

To me a status run is when someone goes somewhere for the express intention of accumulating SCs and FF points and most times does not even leave the airport.
 
Why is it rude? The abbreviations you mention have been accepted in the travel industry for many years. ASA can have a thousand meanings including "As soon as", "Austalian Society of Authors", "Australian Songwriters Association" and google throws up heaps more examples. And we are not decided whether it is an ASA or ASR. How about RTW or ATW?

Does TT mean Tiger or Trans Tasman? Does TA mean travel agent or Trans Atlantic? It makes it so hard for people to understand what is being abbreviated and why. Personally I feel an Any Seat Award should be typed out each time instead of being abbreviated into something it isn't just like the 2 examples above.

I always find your thread is the easiest to understand.:D

I think you and many more people with large FF point balances will do so as the word gets out, the ASA allows solves the availability issues often discussed while also allowing almost a double up on earning points, I expect the ranks of SG and WP to grow as business owners appreciate the changes.
 
Just a little bit rude John - we have many abbreviations that we use here (for example the DONE and AONE you used above) and I don't think it is simple laziness that makes us use them.
I agree Simon, it's no different to the advent of SG or WP abbreviations, with the benefit that it actually directly translates to the meaning without derogatory comments tacked on....!
I am interested as well how you are getting close to WP on just 200K of awards - a return to the UK in J would costs 252K on standard awards and earn only 480SCs if paid for - so even with double Scs that would be 960 SCs.
This is in addition to regular whY travel which would have kept me at SG, and using some JASAs at classic points levels in addition to the double SC promotion, such as SYD-PER-SIN for 86,000pts (yields 360 SCs as doubled), SIN-SYD for 60,000pts (240 SCs as doubled), and a couple of SYD-BNE-SYD at 32,000 pts (160 SCs doubled each).
 
Well i would just share that i used a JASA so that i would hit Gold on my trip to Japan instead of the return. It cost a bit more than the classic award (CA?) and i did full points purchase not cash and points (maybe a mistake due to the tax dedcutability of the flights but i didn't really have the cash).

By my calculations this just gets me to SG a week earlier than my weekly discount Y communtes. I also got a another JASA on the return from japan and this will get me to Plat at the start of sept, instead of 60 points short at reassessment at the end of sept.

Maybe that devalues WP but then I'd probably have done a status run in spet to get there, or upped my spend on a couple of the weekly communtes to full economy earning fare.

Finally received the email from QF advising "NEW: Earn points on Any Seat Award flights" Timestamped 544pm 27/4/2010 A bit slow there QF, reminds me of JQ's emails ....... maybe a co-incidence somewhere .... errr the CEO? :lol:

Out of interest how are the JASA's pricing compared to classic awards? SIN-SYD for 60K sounds very much like a classic award price.
 
Looking to book one-ways SIN-MEL.

QF is offering it for SGD629 (SGD473fare+SGD157+++) or I can USE POINTS on a sliding scale for between 18K + SGD458 and 54K + SGD0.

Personally, I value 54K QFF points at much more than ~AUD500.

Of course, in either case the fare is 1) Upgradeable and 2) as a WP I'd earn ~7.5K QFF points and 30 SC's.
 
My trick is to find a classic award, then book it as ASA. That way you get it at classic point levels, but get SCs to boot. :p

Ok understand in theory but maybe its just the long lunch I just came back from but how do you do this in practise? ASA's are almost always much more than classic awards?

I guess the theory/practice is that if a Classic Award is available on a flight then cheaper revenue fares would also be available.

Since an Any Seat award is somewhat revenue based, they would be cheaper than normal.
