I am currently sitting in the J lounge in Sydney and have been advised that the J lounges are being painted and decorated during this period. It is also the same response that was given in Melbourne J lounge earlier this morning. So it seems they are all saying the same thing.

Time will tell but not impressed as have several flights during the first part of January. Grrrrrrrr

CBR J lounge needs painting and decorating? It still looks new!

And Qantas has still got the mistake there that Gold Frequent Flyers can use the business lounge. Fair dinkum unbelievable that the work experience kid who updates the internet site hasn't been told the actual admission requirements.

Maybe Red Roo should advise them?

It doesn't say anything of the sort.

Nowhere does it say gold can use the business class lounge, it quite clearly says gold can use the Qantas club which is 100% right. Think too many are reading the words, drawing their own conclusion and getting the knickers in a knot over nothing.

It doesn't say anything of the sort.

Actually when I read it again I see that I have made a mistake in putting all listed groups as being eligible for the J lounge.

That'll teach me to write without reading properly.

Well back again

have just had a good conversation with the lounge staff at the Sydney J lounge and according to them All the clubs nominated will be Repainted ina reas such as celings, the granite floors repolished, carpets deep cleaned and the bathrooms regrouted.

They chose to do it during this period as it is when the lounge is at its quitest. Further consideration was given to the fact that if they tried to do it after hours the cost would be around 3 times higher and the disruption considerabley more.

Time will tell but I do get the feeling from staff that this is genuine.

Cheers

I wonder what would happen if they tried to do a refurb for international J lounges... esp in ports where there is no F lounge...

...still a bit suspicious about CBR. Each time I'm there I think the J-lounge looks excellent.

I usually don't pay too much attention to these details, but I have to admit that the showers in SYD domestic business lounge are in a really poor state (rust, paint peeling, etc.)

Still, the point about Golds being able to use the QC is nothing new and doesn't deserve a mention for this notice. What I also find odd is that there's no mention of Business Class passengers being "invited to use our Qantas Clubs" - after all, they are called the Business Lounges.

Indeed, the lounge least in need of a refurbishment - probably just to make it consistent.

Not surprising given they were originally part of the QP.

Actually, they underwent a considerable revamp (woody features replaced with the white Marblely stuff) around the time the J lounges were created circa 2007.

Maybe they should have written:

Platinum, Platinum 1 and OneWorld Emerald members will be invited to invade the haven ordinarily reserved for our gold members.

It seems they are paying attention, the website wording has been changed since yesterday:

Note: From 26 December 2012 to 6 January 2013, the Business Lounge at domestic airports in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra will be closed for routine maintenance. All Platinum and Platinum One Qantas Frequent Flyers, customers flying Business and eligibleoneworld members are invited to use the Qantas Club.

The Chairman’s Lounges remain fully operational during this time providing a premium service to our valued customers.

It's good to know that I'm not a valued customer.

I will be very interested to see the improvements after the 6th of January.

I'm pretty sure I've got a letter somewhere that says I'm one of their most valued customers. Guess I can use the CL, if I had plans to fly at that time.

I just love it when words like "invited to use" are an invitation to a downgrade in service.

Not an issue in Adelaide. :(

Well at least they didn't say "During this time we will be enhancing our business lounges".

Quite glad my domestic travel for the year ends on the 25th, then International on the 26th (hope they don't close the Flounge as I'm looking forward to blueberry pancakes for brunch...!) ;)

The blueberry pancakes are indeed delicious, but unfortunately they're not on the summer menu. They've been replaced by pancakes accompanied with apricots and whipped cream, pictured below (taken on Tuesday this week):

Also, there are now red signs at the bottom of the lounge escalator in MEL, as well as near the frosted door to the J lounge advising of the closure. :)

Indeed.

As a silver, you are a 'valued' member of the program.
as a gold, you are 'one of the most valued' members.
as a plat, you are 'one of the most highly valued' members.
as a P1, you get 'the ultimate' in service.

By the sounds of it, the CL is going to be a busy place over Xmas.

Having just returned from a trip to Melbourne I can say that the lounge in Melbourne was overrun with squealing children, crying babies and although not totally full it was very busy. I mentioned my disappointment on the closure of the business lounge to the girl on the bar who said that "refurbishment work" was definitely taking place in the business lounge! I said that it seemed unlikely that work was needed in Canberra given the age of the lounge and that I felt it was more a matter of staffing and that I thought it was a bit poor.
