25th will be quiet of course, i was referring to after that.. but then different times of the day will be busier or quieter!

As was I.

CBR QP on the 27th this year at noon was similar.

And I travel on the 26th, 27th and 28th quite a bit. The J-lounges I go to are usually great on those dates. And were again this year - but only got to try the 25th. :(

There was nothing going on the the CBR J lounge on the 27th at noon. The entrance was roped off and the lights were out.

Back on topic:

Even if maintenance work is being done, it's amazing that all the 4 domestic J-lounges (that vary in size, age and fixtures) can have the work done on the exact same dates.

Really amazing that all the maintenance work lined up that way.

Actually, it would make sense to line up that way as "non-peak business travel period" so that's when you'd schedule down time.

The question really is: is there any actual maintenance that requires lounge shutdown being done? Or are they closed to save money (any repairs/maintenance being done is incidental).

How so? They are all in different cities so why would there by any issues lining up the mx work?

My point is the 'maintenance' work is taking exactly 12 days to do. In all lounges it's exactly the same time - 12 days. But all the lounges are different in size, age, layout, fixtures, yet the 'maintenance' required will take exacly the same time?

I've been past a one now (a couple of times) and *nothing* was happening. The lights weren't even on!

I was also told when entering the BNE J lounge last week, that it would be closed between so-and-so dates, for maintenance.

A vacuum and changing of the light-bulbs could technically could as maintenance though....but l think it's a way for QF to save money during this less busy period.

Qantas decided to close domestic J-lounges and reduce some Y-class meal services for 12-14 days over the Christmas/New Year period.

I've travelled every year during this time and have always enjoyed the relative quiet of the J-lounges. Sure, Qantas might use this time to do some maintenance of some of the closed J-lounges.

But I very much doubt that maintenance was the main reason for closing all of them, as Qantas claims. I'm of the opinion that this is a pure cost cutting measure.

I can't recall this happening in previous years.

Maybe it was cheaper to print one sign several times saying "all the dom J lounges will be closed from 26/12-6/1" than it was to print several different signs for each lounge!

Agree completely, and it's the usual "enhancement" of the truth from QF that rankles.

Love the thinking - perhaps they would send all the QP patrons to CL or J lounge while that happens. (Ha Ha)
Maybe the odd J lounge is having some extra cleaning or such but I still believe the closure has a lot to do with staffing.

The lounge dragon at QP SYD on the 29th was at pains to emphasise that the closure of the J lounge was for cleaning and maintenance; she said it a couple of times in different ways. So I expect that QF has copped a bit of criticism from J and WP pax denied access to an advertised benefit and so are trying to make clear (create impression) that the closure is of the unavoidable nature. For the record, the lounge dragon was anything but -- a lovely lady.

I'm not looking forward to the QP at BNE today if Sprucegooses's account is any indication. BNE, even in J lounge, is usually bedlam at the best of times.

I wonder when the QP gets cleaned and maintained - or don't the plebs in there deserve a clean lounge? :)

I look forward to J lounge access soon whilst the QP undergoes routine maintenance.

It gets cleaned when the J lounge grows and swallows that part of the QP.

:D

Now that the domestic J-lounges are open again, are there any reports on the renovations?

Yes. I walked past the SYD and CBR lounges multiple times on various days during the closure.

I believe all the lights were on annual leave as there was no illumination in the lounges.

If work was actually going on, then that'd be an OH&S violation wouldn't it? ;-)

I posted this on another thread in relation to the MEL J lounge:
...
I believe they reopened Sunday. Not much apparent maintenance - they still have not fixed the glass benchtop over the servery area.
I am thinking the main renovation over the Christmas/New Year period closure was to the lounge management's budget.

To be fair, though I'm just as skeptical about the maintenance work, any tool-based work often has to take place after hours due to the security requirements.

I was in the Sydney QP on 27 Dec mid morning and I could hear hammering or banging going on, which sounded to me like it was coming from the J lounge.
