Can't leave Melbourne Airport During transit??? [DOH-MEL-ADL vv]

Hong Kong or Singapore would be fine. They don't shut down. And clubs open. Don't know about LA.

I guess the main problem is AU airports are the "end of the line" for the vast majority of international passengers and synched around certain timings, whereas major hubs that link continents are often 24/7 operations.

DOH is extremely busy around and after midnight, AU airports largely dead.

Oh, for sure. But there are plenty of economy class folk with no status or lounge access that have long transits. Even some premium pax connecting in the state's with no lounge access. You just push through it.

But it's unnecessary when there are direct flights to Adelaide and many who have flown this route before might not realise what was happening when they rebook. Like I said, I trust there are sufficient warnings. Sons PIL fly Manchester - Doh - ADL, he is frailish but able to travel. This route would cause him serious difficulties and stress.

I have booked this flight DOH-ADL in October and plan to get off in MEL. I have no intention of going to ADL. I always fly HBO.

It will be interesting to hear how it works out.
And the comon initialisation is HLO; i.e. Hand Luggage Only.

I read that most people are flying this flight to MEL only anyway, so I hardly see how it can be an issue, just go through immigration with them and if asked I have a migraine!

Different but somewhat related question: Mr Wombatcountry is scheduled to fly on an award QR914 in July, DOH-ADL-AKL, but now he thinks he might prefer to get off at ADL (no checked luggage). Should be no problem, right?

His BP would be for DOH-AKL, not sure if he'd be allowed out of the transit area?

How does this work in practice?

Will airline, airport or immigration staff in ADL ask you to produce a boarding pass from the flight you just got off from before they let you through immigration?

If you’re travelling on an Australian passport , I don’t believe customs will deny you entry into Australia . It might be a problem for those on different visas .

Very likely/probable QR will be looking for him when he fails to reboard for ADL-AKL.
Real AU & NZ taxes will be different for DOH-ADL & DOH-ADL-AKL. But the immigration staff will have no interest in the tax money.
AU immigration will have a list of who they are expecting. As will NZ immigration.
But all these combinations/permutations with ADL-AKL have probably happened before.

I've seen this comment a few times. It seems a little surprising to me that they will be cross checking passenger manifests in real time of arriving and departing flights with those people showing up at the immigration counter but assuming they do, will they actually refuse you entry if you have the valid visa or citizenship to enter that country, for the sole reason that you appear on a passenger list for a flight departing flight later that day?

Edit: I assume ADL International has smartgates. Will it be smart enough to pick up that the passenger has an onward boarding pass and refuse entry on that basis alone?

Agreed. If you hold an AUS or NZ passport, or a visa - they will let you in. Border force isn’t there to enforce married segment rules.

Doesn’t mean they won’t ask questions.

I can’t speak for that flight and unsure if it’s common practice but when we did AKL-ADL there were airport staff checking boarding passes and directing those that were getting off in ADL to proceed one way and those heading on to DOH to head another way. I doubt they have any authority to stop you though if you really wanted to get through
