Can't leave Melbourne Airport During transit??? [DOH-MEL-ADL vv]

Has anyone gotten any updates on whether its possible to disembark in Melbourne if you have checked luggage?

I spoke with the staff of qatar online here and they said you are able to offload your bags but still seems risky
There’s your answer . You ask Ground staff in Barcelona and see what they say . Simple

True enough, but I think JayTee is trying to get to Sydney. So finding out at Barcelona makes arranging onward travel a tad tricky.

Given this is not a widespread scenario I'm not sure a reliable and definitive answer will be forthcoming.

I'm flying the QR 988 flight next week on an AA business award (starting in Stockholm) and was hoping to hear if anyone with a ticketed arrival in Adelaide has managed to end their trip in Melbourne?

@frequentflyer91 , did you perhaps get a positive response from the ground staff in Barcelona or Doha?

looking for more recent experiences of anyone on QR988 flight ticketed to ADL has stopped their journey at MEL?

No issues just walking off with the other MEL pax and going to immigration? Will be handle luggage only.

Surely QR staff can’t force you from just going to immigration?

Bump. Anyone done this recently?

I've done this last week actually, not by choice....

When you get off there will be two Qatar staff with signs for passengers connecting onto the Adelaide flight, so if you don't have any checked bags then just keep quiet and continue onto immigration. They had a list of all passengers connecting and were crossing names off so they'll definitely know your name if you don't show up, I'm not sure if there will be any consequences.

I probably wouldn't try it if the flight was booked with Avios, few stories of accounts being locked for no reason, so I wouldn't give them one.

Overall the experience was horrible and would not do it again unless they change the flight times. No water or food was given even in J for the "technical stop" and no lounge invites are offered as they all are either closed by the time the flight arrives or shortly after.

Any updates to this situation ? If I simply walk off and expect to receive my luggage at Mel airport, that probably won't happen, right?

No. If you have luggage it could also mean you’re up for any delay costs while they off load your bags!

My son's girlfriend (20) is looking to do DOH-ADL with the 11pm-6am layover in Melbourne international transit --- any views on whether it's safe for a single young lady to be on her own in transit over these hours? I presume it's fine, as likely to be some staff / security around.

I went ahead and booked this flight and going to be getting off at Melbourne. Taking hand luggage only because of this. Any more recent updates of those with hand luggage only, can still just walk to customs with the other pax and ignore the QR staff with a sign? QR staff aren't getting pushy on keeping ADL pax onwards?

I asked about this in Doha recently and was told by the staffer “not to do it” and that it is frowned upon by the airline and they have started to crack down on it. Sounds like bluff to me but he did say they keep a record of all passengers details who do it.
I’m still yet to hear officially from anyone that they have been punished so I think it’s a scare tactic

At other QR tag flight ports, they check everyone's boarding pass as you disembark and if you weren't terminating at that port you were directed to a separate area. I don't believe that they have implemented this at MEL, but they could very well do so.

They can try to direct you anywhere they like but good luck physically stopping someone leaving if that’s what they choose to do.

I hear what you are saying but "disobeying a security officer's directive" might result in more than bargained for.

I'm not sure that physically stopping someone (by a non-accredited law enforcement person) at an airport in Australia is legal.

I really don't think that this would be an issue, but, it is Qatar, so recriminations could ensue. If in doubt, just give them a miss.

Maybe so but I’m unsure how any security office could lawfully force someone to fly to a destination against their will. I’d be fairly confident they can’t and won’t do anything to stop someone who insists on leaving at MEL.

100%. Maybe some issue with the airline in the future but no one is stopping someone leaving at MEL if that’s what they decide to do.

Yeah, fair call but I reckon they would make it unpleasant before you were able to leave airside. Maybe that's a price worth paying not to take the final leg of the journey.

Just knee them in the groin (metaphorically speaking of course).

Yes but you're likely to have ABF, federal police or immigration officers involved if security directives aren't followed. Likely followed by some interviews and questions as to why you're doing what you're doing and not flying to ADL.

I mean you'll probably get through eventually but it'll be a note and some flags against you from immigration.

I don't think so. ABF couldn't give a damn as long as your're an Australian citizen and want to exit at MEL.

What are we talking about? The airline's profit margin?

Oh, and I did use to work at the Department of Immigration (as it was in those days). It's not what you are...
