Careers/Jobs of Frequent Flyers

Hi all,

Not really sure if this is in the right section or not.

I'm not really introducing myself and I am not really new (been a member since '07) but I would like to say really quickly thanks to all that make this site so great, long time lurker (I try to post when I can) and I dont really class myself as a 'Frequent Flyer' because I only travel for leisure and not business.

Which comes to the point of my thread:

I am curious to find out what industry/careers that frequent flyers work in.

(this type of this thread has been done, and I apologise if it has but I havent come across one)

I like the idea of getting paid to fly, racking up SC and then using them when it comes to getting leave.

Maybe I am curious because I am in an industry where getting paid to travel is basically non-existant (real estate sales).

Keen to hear the responses.

Thanks,

NC

I used to think my husband was so lucky travelling often on business but now I realise its not all as fun as it seems. Especially if you are travelling on your own.

Hmmmm.... chocolate

Interesting thread. I'm sure I saw this earlier but I obviously forgot to post.

A lot of people here know where I work already, but I for those who don't, i'm a network engineer for a company that does pre-paid global roaming SIM Cards (seems to fit in quite nicely with my love for travel; it just panned out that way, honest!;)). I'm the person who makes sure the calls and network actually functions, rather than do sales or anything like that.

In my other job (I hold down two; mainly as I believe idle minds are the devils playground, although spending so much time on airplanes seems to negate that!) I work for a company that does casino nights, dealing Poker and Blackjack for corporate functions, fundraisers and a poker league here in Victoria (not APL; we have dealers, we're not self dealt!). It's a hell of a lot of fun, even if the salary ain't that great. Where else do you go, where the boss walks in and says 'drewbles, want a beer?' and buys you a beer at work. We're encouraged to have a few drinks and be sociable with players and others. What's not to like about that? :)

So, where are our free samples? I promise to say your product is good if you keep supplying the freebies ;)

Night cabbie in Canberra, dodging drunks and kangaroos as I dream of distant places.

I drive Silver Service, and a lot of my work is to and from the airport. Geez, I wish I had a buck for every time I've driven along that airport road!

Come to think of it, I do.

Nothing romantic about my occupation - I sell bicycle horns.

Previous to that I washed cars - previous to that I salted sheep skins - previous to that I drove trucks / buses - previous to that I mustered cattle / sheep - nothing exciting like you other guys.

Hope you get more than just a buck for it! And I mean in your hand at the end of the day....

That ride between CBR airport and city centre ain't cheap...
It's around $20 for the ten minute ride. Traffic delays can bump that up a bit. Going the other way, there's the $2 airport toll, and if you get a Silver Service collection on arrival, there's the $11 SS fee plus the $11 fee the airport charges. Hire cars will do the run for $50.

Compared to other cities, with more distant airports, it's not bad. About the only othe city I can think of with a similar situation is Washington, where Reagan National is just over the Potomac - and I've rarely seen a busier airport, with jets skuttling out of each other's way, crossing the runway while another is on final etc.

What Canberra could do with is a shuttle service. A fixed price of $15 to the usual destinations - the Parliamentary Triangle, the City centre - and it would be really popular.

But yeah, I get more than a dollar for the run. Half what's on the meter, less 9% GST, less income tax. Say six dollars. I might get two of those jobs in a good hour.

I work in IT. In quite a specalised field doing work for very large companies. So often the job will require me to go where the projects are. This can result in a real mix as travel is concerned. Some years I have not flown at all. Some years I will do 50 to 100 domestic flights. Some years I'll do 10 business class trips to Asia or Europe. This has made it hard to maintain FF status. In one case I made platinum status on an airline but never had the chance to fly with them while I was platinum.

I used to work for the South Australian Govt, now i'm working for a University in Melbourne. I need to angle towards a job that will send me travelling :D

what a wide range of occupations...

I work in HR (Learning and Development) for State Transit Authority of NSW. The job does not require travelling at all other than catching a bus and train to/from work;)

However, I do fly a little bit - long haul at least once a year, the reason being visiting my family overseas (Russia), I go to see them every year unless they decided to come to Australia (they have done this twice in the past 4 years) and even if they do, I would still fly somewhere far away for a holiday (mainly Asia). Also, fly a bit domestically, capital cities - got friends in Adelaide that I like catching up with at least twice a year, also Melbourne is good for shows and food and Brisbane is great for an occasional flood (black humour)

Flying to Europe in less that two weeks time - SYD-NAR-SVO-MMK-SVO-PAR-own way to BCN-SVO-HKG-SYD. Should try to write a travel report.

then off to Melbourne in October, Auckland in December and SYD-KUL-HAN-a few domestic sectors with Vietnam Airlines that are not finalised yet-SGN-KUL-KUL-SYD in Feb 2012

I am back on this forum after a 3 year hiatus. Good to see some familiar faces still around. I remember how excited I was about the flying aspect of my job, however after 8 months that wore off ! Maybe if I was in business or first class I would be more positive !!! I have got to experience a wide variety of things in this time, a few that scared me (I don't like flying in South America !!) I work on a ship and I fly internationally about 12 times a year.

Melbourne based Federal public servant. Held heaps of different roles, major ones that resulted in travel were being a project manager delivering new client forms and gov websites and for a few years I was on public speaking duties that saw me go to Syd regularly but also Darwin, Adelaide and Perth.

More recently as a Director of Risk & Intel (yes we have such areas) I have to work with other similar areas / people including local law enforcement.

Recently had to go to Syd five times to give evidence in one criminal case. No fun having three defense counsels attacking your creditability, intelligence and ethics :(

Work travel is domestic only ( also status credits only no points allowed). Overseas travel is leisure (trying for overseas posting).

AFF gave me the knowledge to book RTW Award which I've now done three times for myself and setup about 5 for family and friends. Members sharing knowledge freely really makes this a great site.

Agree with earlier comments pick a job you can enjoy or enjoy being challenged at. If you get travel and good salary great but they are add-ons.

To all the Uni students here good luck with future careers and travel plans. If you want help on applying for gov jobs PM me.

I work FIFO out to the middle of nowhere in WA so I'm on a plane every week either in or out of here...I used to work in IT as a systems engineer up here but decided to change it up and I'm now an Underground Control Room Operator

But I quite commonly take overseas trips on my 6 day breaks or take some leave, so the rest of my travel is international for leisure, 7 trips in the last year with another 6 lined up over the next 9 months.

Be it cheap flights to Asia, Europe, USA or the middle east I'm a sucker for more flying and *A points ;)

I spend my days hauling camera gear through airports to get to exotic places as a photographer for National Geographic Magazine. I wouldn't trade it for any other job in the world and it beats the hell out of working in an office and wearing a suit and tie!:D

So next time you are sitting there silently cursing the guy who is trying to get a very heavy backpack up into the overhead locker - come and give me a hand will ya!

Despite all of the travel that I do I'm still clueless about the frequent flyer stuff - but you are all helping me to start to learn it a little - and it's much appreciated!

Before anyone asks - my weapon of choice these days is Canon.
