Cathay Pacific Delays/Cancellations

CX104 (1420 hours mid afternoon MEL - HKG) on Friday 9 June (A350 B-LRA) did not take off until 1820 hours. As a consequence, likely arrival has become 0109 hours on Saturday 10 June.

Also noted today's CX 134 MEL-HKG was rescheduled at some time in the last day or two to depart at 12:05 instead of the usual 07:45. Inbound aircraft was more or less on time.

Does this indicate a systemic problem in HKG, such as bad weather or late connecting flights from mainland China account air traffic congestion or the use of airspace by the military?

On the evening of Friday 9 June, with much rain in SYD, CX139 from HKG to SYD encountered three holding patterns but appears to have diverted to MEL with arrival suggested as at about 2145. This flight should arrive in SYD at 2010 so it looks like hotel accommodation may be the go in both Sydney and Melbourne tonight depending on which batch of passengers. Not helpful to CX's bottom line! Aircraft is B773ER B-KPY.

UPDATE: Melbourne Airport's site suggests that CX139 will be departing from MEL to SYD at 1200 'high noon' on Saturday 10 June, presumably to allow a sufficient rest period for the crew. This has not yet been updated on the Cathay Pacific website with it claiming that departure from MEL will be tonight at 2200 hours for a post-curfew arrival in SYD.

The delayed CX100 from MEL and SYD on Saturday 10 June (see previous post) did not take off from the latter until 1619 hours, so HKG arrival of B-KPY is suggested as 2328.

During the mid to late evening of Monday 12 June, CX163 from HKG should arrive in MEL at about 2225 hours instead of 2140.

On Tuesday 13 June, CX135 (A333 B-LAQ) should arrive in MEL at 0703 hours, 43 minutes late after its overnight journey ex HKG.

CX101 from HKG down to SYD is suggested as arriving at 1208, 73 minutes tardy with A333 B-LBJ, all the way.

With yesterday's typhoon in Hong Kong there may be some continuing delays. On Wednesday 14 June, CX135, the redeye from HKG (A333 B-LAC) is estimated to arrive at 0807, 107 minutes late. The returning CX134, the scheduled 0745 hours departure can be expected to depart at around 0925 if all goes well during the turnaround.

CX103 from HKG to CNS is sharing in the pain with arrival of A333 B-LAF likely at 0750 hours, 80 minutes behind schedule.

On Thursday 15 June, the HKG - MEL redeye CX135 is again beset by a delay with arrival of A333 B-LAG suggested as 0801 hours, 101 minutes late. The returning flight CX134 (the scheduled 0745 hours) will be unable to depart until at least 0910, meaning missed or much tighter connections in HKG.

UPDATE: CX134 took off at a very late 1031 hours, an unusually long turnaround. HKG arrival is predicted to be at 1728 hours instead of 1520, 128 minutes tardy.

CX170 from last night has just gone past my place, so has been delayed about 20 hours or so from the usual midnight departure.

On Friday 16 June, CX163, the 1035 hours HKG - MEL that took off at 1129 (B773ER B-KQL) is likely to arrive at 2221 hours, 41 late.

There has been continuing stormy weather in HKG. On Saturday 17 June 2017, CX105, the 0010 hours HKG - MEL that took off at 0306 should arrive with A350 B-LRG at 1342, 147 minutes late. CX105 is timetabled to then depart MEL at 1420 hours so its HKG-bound departure will be delayed by at least 35 minutes.

The HKG - SYD CX101 (A333 B-LAC) is predicted to be in the Australian mainland harbour city at 1204 hours, 69 minutes tardy.

Tuesday 20 June has CX163 (1035 hours HKG - MEL, B773ER B-KQZ) having become airborne at 1132. It looks like arriving at 2210 tonight, half an hour behind schedule.

For the second consecutive day, CX163, the HKG - MEL day flight is delayed with the Wednesday 21 June arrival estimated as half an hour behind at 2210. B-KQE is the B773ER.

Saturday 24 June has CX134 (0745 hours MEL - HKG, A333 B-LAK) having taken off at 0844. Arrival should be 48 minutes late at 1608.

On Monday 26 June, CX134 is again late, with this 0745 hours MEL - HKG flight taking off at 0824 with A333 B-LBJ 'all the way.' Arrival should be at 1556, 36 minutes behind schedule.

CX174 (early morning 0625 hours ADL - HKG, B-LAC) is also late with it in the sky at 0706, meaning likely arrival at 1417 hours, 32 minutes tardy.

CX162 (Wednesday 28 June 1005 hours SYD - HKG that was not in the sky until 1320 in the afternoon, A333 B-LAC) is suggested as arriving at 2050, 180 minutes late. No doubt there will be quite a few passengers with missed connections.

With the increased competition from the large number of mainland Chinese airlines flying into Australia (even if some frequencies such as XIY - MEL are as infrequent as twice weekly), is it still the case that on a typical CX flight many passengers are connecting to or from mainland China, MNL, CEB, SGN, BKK and other similar 'nearby' Asian destinations, as well as LHR and European cities?

Tuesday 4 July's CX110, the 0730 hours SYD up to HKG was in the sky 59 minutes later. A333 B-LAG should arrive at 1547, 37 minutes tardy.

CX134 (0745 hours MEL - HKG, A333 B-LAP) is showing as having departed at 0835 but from what FR24 shows, as at 0856 it may still be at the MEL international terminal. It looks like being at least an hour late into HKG.
